SIGNIFICANCE AND STATUS OF EXOBIOLOGY A paper presented at the annual meeting of A.I.B.S., Boulder, Colorado, on August 26, 1964 GILBERT V. LEVIN Hazleton Laboratories, Inc., Falls Church, Virginia ABSTRACT Although there are no direct data on extraterrestrial life, planetary observations and statistical considerations support the possibility of such life. The significance of the questions the “science” of exobiology may answer warrants its active pursuit. These questions range from whether life exists elsewhere to fundamental inquiries in all the sciences. The title of this paper, “Significance and Status of Exobiology,” has been carefully selected. The significance of the term “exobiology” is in dispute and there are those who declare that the subject has no status . The term is of recent origin and is intended to denote the study of extraterrestrial life. The argument arises not only from those normally protesting the adulteration of the English language with newly-coined words but from those who literally interpret the prefix “exo” as meaning “out of, outside, or outer layer.” Some contend that a better term would be “xenobiology” in that the prefix “xeno” connotes “strange or foreign.” Others feel that “biology” is sufficient, for it would encompass extraterrestrial creatures. These arguments may have semantic merit, but “exobiology” has been adopted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is now a part of the literature. A dispute over nomenclature should not discourage biologists from pursuing the subject.

    Exobiology
Of all mysteries of the universe, the possibility of other intelligent species must be the most provocative. It would be the greatest achievement in the History of humankind to contact other intelligent species. Unfortunately, I don't think we would survive. Key words: ET, galactic civilization, pre-big bang civilizations, science fiction, X-Files Geological time is in the order of millions of years; life must also appear in such large cosmological scales. Other intelligent species are not likely to be in the Bronze Age or in any age that happened to us in the last thousands of years. If we are to face a more advanced civilization, they will be millions of years ahead of us because they originated millions of years before. At a cosmological time scale, energy manipulation is a much better process to classify a civilization (of course that energy and matter are connected by Einstein's famous equation E=mc ). Nikolai Kardashev and Freeman Dyson developed the following process to classify alien civilizations:
Type Level of Energy Control I Absolute control over a planet's energy.

Exobiology sometimes called Astrobiology attempts to reveal the origin, evolution and distribution of life on Earth and throughout the Universe. Exobiology is a multidisciplinary research field, combining astronomy, astrophysics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geology and specific fields such as paleobiology, organic chemistry, geomicrobiology, ecogenomics and others. To understand the evolution of life in the context of planetary environments, numerous space missions and space- and Earth based experiments are either currently being carried out, or are planned for the near future. The IWF is involved in two projects related to exobiology, where the first exobiology project studies together with colleagues from the Semmelweis University in Budapest the effects on extraterrestrial radiation on molecules which are essential for life. The second project is called ROME (Response of Organisms to the Martian Environment). Here we investigate the frame of ESA’s future space missions the extreme Martian environment conditions related to organic molecules and microorganisms. The Space Research Institute in Graz will also organize together with the Institute for Geophysics, Astrophysics and Meteorology and the European Exo/Astrobiology Network the

[Inspired by Dr. Timothy Leary's book, Exo-Psycholgy The patterns of nature have revealed themselves to be fractal and self-repeating. The morphology of one level is reflected in all levels, from the microscopic to the macrocosmic. The classic example is the shoreline, recursive and self-referential, carving the same odd wandering line whether you're looking at the rocky cliff edge from a few feet away or from several miles above. Similarly the small leaves on the frond of a fern trace the same contour as the frond itself, and the fern as a whole. Or consider the swirl of water around the drain and the swirl of the Milky Way around the massive black hole at its core. Indeed, there's a certain simple economy in nature, deploying basic rules across vast scales. Nature is of course dynamic and the processes that transcribe these fractal morphologies are themselves iterative and self-similar. The development of the fern leaf follows a pattern that continues at the level of the frond and the entire fern. As the planets orbit our Sun, so too does our Sun orbit the galactic center. Our galaxy itself might be orbiting around the center of a local cluster. The same process - gravity and centrifugal motion - governs each level. Life on Earth has demonstrated it's incessant ability to spread into any possible crack and crevice available. It is impossibly persistent and adaptive, evolving and migrating ceaselessly. It would seem that this is a fundamental law of the imperative of life. It just keeps going. If life migrates and adapts from one rock to another, region to region, climate to climate, the notion of self-similarity across scales implies that the same persistence would carry life from the womb of Earth off into space across the heavens until it finds an appropriate substrate in which to flourish further.

Studying microbial communities that are adapted to extreme conditions, and establishing the limits to life on our own planet, may give us insights into the potential of other worlds to support life, and thus determine whether life as we know it could exist elsewhere in the galaxy. These studies are relevant to inadvertent transmission of terrestrial extremophiles to moons and planets during interplanetary space flights, and to the extraterrestrial origin of life.
In collaboration with scientists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), we determine the survival of Bacillus sp. strain PS3D and Deinococcus radiodurans in real and simulated space conditions, including exposure to extreme UV radiation (10-100 nm) during a rocket flight (Saffary et al., 2002). Exposure to space vacuum (~ 10-6 Pa) decreased cell survival by 2 and 4 orders of magnitude for Bacillus sp. strain PS3D and
