Exobiology is the study of the origin of life on this or other planets. It is a highly interdisciplinary subject which employs chemistry, biology, astronomy, geology, and all of the fields between. As a result, web pages relevant to the origin of life tend to be scattered. Here is a compilation of a few links to the origin of life and related subjects. Exobiology The study of the conditions necessary to support the independent development of extraterrestrial life. Direct proof has not yet been found of life anywhere in the universe other than on the earth, but scientifically sound arguments have been advanced in support of such a possibility. The findings of modern astronomy suggest that a large number of stars in the universe could have planets orbiting around them that provide conditions suitable for life, and laboratory experiments have clearly demonstrated that the molecules necessary for life can be formed under a wide range of conditions. ABSTRACT
Exobiology is a discipline that deals with the origin, occurrence and distribution of life in the Universe. Although this subject is of widespread interest to high school science students, it is not generally dealt with comprehensively in most textbooks. In addition, teachers often have inadequate resources available to prepare classroom presentations on how life may have begun on Earth and whether these processes might take place elsewhere in the solar system and the Universe. This module provides introductory teaching lessons for classroom coverage of Exobiology and the origin of life that is suitable for use in both general and advanced high school biology courses.
    INTRODUCTION
Any discussion of the origin of life must first consider the definition of life. This Exobiology teaching module defines life is an autonomous replicating system that evolves by natural selection. With this definition, the origin of life is synonymous with the origin of evolution. The transition from the abiotic chemistry of the primitive Earth to the first self-replicating molecular systems capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution marked the point of the origin of life. On Earth, subsequent evolution of these self-replicating molecules then gave rise to the RNA world and ultimately the DNA/protein world that is characteristic of all modern life.

exobiology or astrobiology, search for extraterrestrial life within the solar system and throughout the universe. Philosophical speculation that there might be other worlds similar to ours dates back to the ancient Chinese and Greeks. However, the achievements of space exploration and molecular biology have turned speculation into experimentation. Parameters of a Suitable Environment for Life There are six basic parameters that determine whether an environment is suitable for life as we know it: temperature, pressure, salinity, acidity, water availability, and oxygen content. Advanced life is restricted to a narrow range of these parameters, but primitive microorganisms exist over a much wider range. Data already collected by space probes essentially rule out advanced life on other planets of our solar system; however, given the potential number of planetary systems in the galaxy, there may be as many as 50,000 planets that have earthlike conditions, a fraction of which could have cultures as technologically advanced as our own. Three decades of passive listening with radio telescopes have produced no signals comparable to those radiating from earth, but we do not know if another civilization would produce electromagnetic radiation in detectable amounts.

Exobiologists investigate how the formation of stars and solar systems led to the existence of planets suitable for life, how life originated on Earth and perhaps elsewhere, and which factors influenced biological evolution. The understanding of these events shape the study of how life arises and evolves in the universe. Earth is the only planet that we know harbors life. Exobiologists can use their knowledge about life on Earth to begin their search for life elsewhere. All known life on Earth is based on the element carbon. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus are elements that exist in all organisms on Earth. Exobiologists can conceive of organisms that would not rely on those elements, but those elements are among the most abundant elements in the universe and would probably be available elsewhere as a basis for living systems. Carbon is particularly important to life because it forms three-dimensional molecules of large size and complexity in organic (carbon-containing) compounds (

Exobiologists are increasingly turning their attention to other places in the solar system. The Pioneer and Voyager missions of the 1970s and 1980s returned data that showed that Saturn’s moon Titan had an atmosphere made up of gases similar to those in the Miller-Urey experiment. Jupiter’s moon Europa is even more intriguing, with a smooth icy surface and puzzle-like cracks suggesting that a liquid ocean may exist underneath. The Galileo orbiter began an orbit around Jupiter in 1995, studying Jupiter’s moons, with an extended mission focusing on Europa. The Cassini probe was launched in 1997 toward Saturn and Saturn’s moon Titan. IV

On October 12, 1992, NASA’s two-part SETI effort initiated observations with the All-Sky Survey, a survey of space using a 34 m (112 ft) diameter radio telescope in Goldstone, California, and the Targeted Search, which examined solar-type stars using the National Science Foundation's 305 m (1000 ft) telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The project was not appreciated by some in the United States Congress, however, and was canceled in October 1993. The equipment developed for the Targeted Search was transferred to the private SETI Institute, which deployed it to Australia in 1995. SETI continues to operate the search with other equipment at a radio telescope in Green Bank—Project Ozma’s former home.

    I. Exobiology
definition: Exobiology is the study of life outside that known on today's Earth. As a discipline it is pretty much defined by a funding program with NASA's Space Sciences which includes studies in early life on earth, abiogenesis (origins of life studies) , SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and more recently, the study of martian meteorites.

In the 1970's two very successful NASA missions sent 2 surface landers to Mars. What they found was a desert-like landscape strewn with volcanic ejecta and shifting sands. However, since the GCMS found no organic compounds at its detection limits (a few parts per billion), the initial positive results of the Viking experiments soon became moot. A. The experiments

    Introduction
Exobiology or astrobiology is the study of life elsewhere in the Universe, where this life is assumed to be non-supernatural and existing in the physical context of our Universe, as Earth life does. edit
    History
The idea of exobiology is about as old as speculations about the existence of Earthlike worlds. Metrodorus of Chios (400 BCE) believed that there were numerous other such worlds, each one approximately the Earth with planets and stars, and he stated that:
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow.
His opinions were held by other Atomists, like Leucippus, Democritus, and the Epicureans, but others, like Aristotle , firmly believed in the Earth's uniqueness. So it remained until Galileo started using his telescope, discovering that other Solar-System objects had Earthlike features. Galileo himself refused to speculate about possible inhabitants of other celestial objects, but that did not stop others. But Johannes Kepler speculated that the Moon's craters were built by Moon inhabitants, on account of their regular shape, and he was followed by many other such speculators. Over the next few centuries, it was a common opinion that the entire Solar System is inhabited, often on the ground that God would not let a world go to waste by leaving it unpopulated.
