The Genes and Developmental Biology Committee supports research which seeks to establish fundamental principles of genetics and gene function in all organisms, or which seeks to understand developmental mechanisms in animals, plants and model microbes including fungi. The remit includes:

This project was originally begun with support from the Lilly Teaching Fellows Program and the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Program.     Darwin and his followers ignored these difficulties, however, and the modern synthesis excluded embryology entirely. Only in the past twenty years, with the rise of developmental genetics, has comparative embryology attracted significant interest from evolutionary biologists. One result of this renewed interest has been the recognition that patterns of early development do not fit the Procrustean bed of recapitulationism.

    Essential germ cell regulator discovered Blimp1 is a transcriptional repressor, which is known to be important for the differentiation of B-cells into plasma cells, by repressing the mature B-cell gene expression programme. Current work in Azim Surani's lab and with his collaborators in Japan and USA has now shown that also has an unexpected critical role during the specification of primordial germ cells in mice.

    cellular and genetic regulatory mechanisms
    The developmental biology program combines research activities centered in the Institute of Neuroscience with those in the Institute of Molecular Biology. Several laboratories (headed by Eisen, Kimmel, Postlethwait, Westerfield, and Weston) cooperate in a program of research concerning the molecular, genetic, and cellular analysis of development in the zebrafish. Other research activities in the molecular and genetic analysis of development address such issues as (1) generation of cell diversity in the Drosophila central nervous system (Doe); (2) cellular signalling mechanism and regulation of mating-type switching in yeast (George Sprague); (3) cell interaction and signalling during lineage specification in the nematode worm, C. elegans (Bowerman), and the mouse embryo (Weston), and hormonal regulation of programmed neuronal death during insect metamorphosis (Weeks). Members of all of these laboratories actively share information and resources in this diverse and rapidly moving field. In addition to a graduate research training program, a weekly journal club and joint research group meetings, the developmental biologists participate in one day-long workshop-symposium each term, organized, in turn, by each laboratory group on some aspect of their research interests.
