Introduction:
Many of the photos taken from texts used by our students. These are used as supplemental handouts and guides for the discussions in our lectures. Most of these topics focus on structure/function correlations. They are not intended to be comprehensive. Some topics, like those focusing on mitochondria, will correlate with biochemistry and physiology lectures that expand students' understanding of that organelle system.

Genetics zoology neurobiology biochemistry The MSc course runs from October to September and consists of taught components in addition to a research project. Students taking the MSc will undertake a Research Project. The Research Project will be in the research laboratory of one of the faculty of the Genetics and Development group in either the Biology Department, the Genome Damage and Stability Centre or the Medical School. Developmental Cell Biology is at the core of understanding how organisms develop from eggs through to adults. This MSc programme offers both practical and theoretical training in aspects of cell and molecular biology as well as molecular genetics and how they can be used to understand development. The programme consists of 4 key courses teaching both the practical techniques and the experimental approaches required to understand development as well as the theoretical background to these processes. A large part of the degree is a Research Project undertaken in one of the active research groups in the School of Life Sciences. Potential research topics range from the control of cell division to the development of muscle cells and include studies using yeast

Trends in Biochemical Sciences An official publication of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Link to Latest issue If you have a personal print subscription to a Trends title please click here Aims and Scope Trends in Biochemical Sciences (TiBS) is designed to keep its readers up-to-date and well informed about recent advances in biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition to topical reviews, which provide the main focus of each issue, TiBS provides a platform for debate and hypothesis where new ideas can be discussed. A popular section is the Protein Sequence Motif column, which publishes short reports of new motifs or sequence homologies that have been recognized in known sequences. TiBS also features letters, reviews of computer applications and techniques, historical perspectives of biochemical and molecular biology research, and book reviews. TiBS is part of the Trends journal series, now recognized as the most highly cited group of monthly review journals in the world.

Research highlights
Ploidy in Huntington's disease
BMC Cell Biology Analysis of cultured cells derived from a mouse model of Huntington's disease shows that, contrary to previous reports, aneuploidy is unlikely to be a hallmark of the disease.
Profilin, a warden of the nuclear transport
BMC Cell Biology Investigation of mutations in the Drosophila gene for profilin indicate that this protein is essential for nuclear trafficking although perhaps not via its known actin-polymerizing function.
