Pinophyta (Gymnosperms): Pinophytina. The Araucariaceae are monoecious or dioecious trees comprising two genera and about 30 species of the Southern Hemisphere. The leaves are opposite or spirally arranged and are needlelike to broad. The male or microsporangiate strobili are axillary or terminal, comprising many spirally arranged microsporophylls, each bearing 5-20 linear, pendant microsporangia on the lower surface. The pollen grains lack wings. The female or megasporangiate strobili are generally large and somewhat woody, with numerous spirally disposed ovuliferous scales, each fused with its bract and bearing a single median ovule on the upper surface. Each "thumbnail" image below is linked to a larger photograph. A raucaria cf araucana , monkey puzzle tree. These images appear to represent female and male individuals of the dioecious species commonly called monkey puzzle tree. 1 - Female, note large round female cones at the tips of branches, 2,3 - male, note elongated male cones at the tips of branches. 138. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Economic Botany Links
Guide to Web resources on ethnobotany and uses of plants.
    http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/scihort/eblinks/
    Economic Botany Links
These links to web resources on useful or poisonous plants are a joint venture between the Centre for Economic Botany , Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the People and Plants project. This is a selective list, focussing on web sites that are information-rich, current, and of practical use in ethnobotanical research and fieldwork. We also include more detailed coverage of organisations relevant to the United Kingdom. In general agriculture and temperate forestry are excluded, but some links are provided on topics (e.g. cereals) on which we receive many queries. Botanical sites are only included if they are useful tools for those concerned with useful plants. In general a link will appear only once in this directory, placed in what we think to be the most relevant category. Users are therefore recommended to browse a range of categories to ensure full coverage. In particular, most bibliographies are in the Online Bibliographies category, rather than under each subject.

The department is strongly committed to excellence in teaching and research. Research is focused on a wide variety of organisms (from microbes to plants to animals) at multiple levels of organization (from molecules and cells through to entire ecosystems). Basic research is being used as a foundation to address some of the most important regional and global issues. The department administers five specialized undergraduate majors (Ecology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Plant Biology, Wildlife Biology, Zoology), and along with the other departments in the College oversees a major in Biological Science. The department offers a wide breadth of courses, with a particular emphasis on inquiry-based learning.
