64. The Mysterious Venus' Flytrap
Comprehensive information about this plant that eats meat and also includes includes information on how to grow one.
http://www.botany.org/bsa/misc/carn.html
Welcome to the Botanical Society of America's Mysterious Venus Flytrap page! This page is intneded as an easy access resource. For more specific and detailed scientific information please also have a look at the BSA's Carnivorous Plants Pages . Definitely worth exploring! The insectivorous (carnivorous) plants are representatives of the Kingdom Plantae, the Division Anthophyta, are located in both Classes Dicotyledones and Monocotyledones , span 6 Orders, 9 Families and 595 species. They provide interesting examples of plant morphology and environmental adaptation. Here you'll find general and scientific information, growing tips, images, further reading, and resources on these mysterious plants. Now, back to the mysterious Venus Flytrap, enjoy! Just like other plants, Venus' Flytraps gather nutrients from gases in the air and nutrients in the soil. However, they live in poor soil and are healthier if they get nutrients from insects. Carnivorous plants live all over the world but Venus' Flytraps live only in select boggy areas in North and South Carolina. Because of people's fascination with these plants, they collected many of them and they became endangered. Venus' Flytraps today are grown in greenhouses. The leaves of Venus' Flytrap open wide and on them are short, stiff hairs called trigger or sensitive hairs. When anything touches these hairs enough to bend them, the two lobes of the leaves snap shut trapping whatever is inside. The trap will shut in less than a second. The trap doesn't close all of the way at first. It is thought that it stays open for a few seconds in order to allow very small insects to escape because they wouldn't provide enough food. If the object isn't food, e.g., a stone, or a nut, the trap will reopen in about twelve hours and 'spit' it out.

The 24 "Canoe Plants" of Ancient Hawaii
Interested in the plants of Hawaii? This site presents a general guide to the plants that were carried throughout the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers in their canoes. Some basic information is provided about each plant along with a sketch/picture when available. Also included are Medicinal Hawaiian Plants, though this area of the site takes a while to load. Very interesting!
Albion College Vascular Plant Image Gallery
The gallery consists of quick-loading images being developed for use by Biology class 216 at Albion College in Albion, Michigan. The plants are primarily from the eastern U.S. and Carribbean. A brief synopsis of the characteristics of the family of each plant is also available.
Album of Plants of Israel

Our featured speaker this year will be Joep Moonen, speaking on "A unique habitat and some special aroids of French Guiana". Joep has lived in South America since 1973 and is the discoverer of 14 aroid and bromeliad species including the beautiful Anthurium moonenii and Philodendron moonenii See the following for more information:

Aroid is the common name for members of the Araceae family of plants, sometimes known as the Philodendron or Arum family. The sometimes beautiful and sometimes bizarre combination of spathe and spadix known as the inflorescence, and sometimes referred to as a "flower", is a distinguishing feature of all aroids. The somewhat neglected Aroid ID Center has moved and is now under the capable management of Marek Argent in Poland. Submit those unknown aroids or stop by and help with identification

    Description
Aquatic Botany is concerned with fundamental studies on structure, function, dynamics and classification of plant-dominated aquatic communities and ecosystems, as well as molecular, biochemical and physiological aspects of aquatic plants. It is also an outlet for papers dealing with applied research on plant-dominated aquatic systems, including the consequences of disturbance (e.g. transplantation, influence of herbicides and other chemicals, thermal pollution, biological control, grazing and disease), the use of aquatic plants, conservation of resources, and all aspects of aquatic plant production and decomposition.

    • This is version: February 4, 2002.
    • If you are looking up names of plants, check the Horti Plex plant database here at GardenWeb.
    • Proper nouns are generally not included in the glossary.
    • Searches are case insensitive.
    • You can browse the glossary, but there are many pages.
    • Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or").
    • To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic.
    • You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition.
    • Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped.
    • This glossary was compiled by the editors of GardenWeb from a variety of sources.

    Botany
    Tradition and Innovation
No scientific subject, perhaps, produced a larger, a more curious, or a more splendidly illustrated literature than the world of plants. Greek medical men and scientists, Roman encyclopedists, and medieval doctors compiled and recompiled herbals, generally taking special interest in those plants that were thought to be of medicinal valueas hundreds were. The Vatican Library is a great repository of this tradition, in which direct observation and inherited stereotypes, empirical evidence and wild fantasy, jostled for centuries.

In Greek, Byzantium, Tenth century, Illustrations added in Byzantine territory, fourteenth century This manuscript, a harmonization of excerpts from two of the most important writers on materia medica of antiquity, was assembled in Byzantium in the tenth century. Most of the substances named in the work are plants. Illustrations were added in the mid- fourteenth century to enhance the practical usefulness of the work. Although many of the illustrationslike the molluscs shown on this pageare strikingly naturalistic, most are copied from much earlier models. Vat. gr. 284 fols. 232 verso-233 recto nature01 NAN.17

    • A Guide to the use of Terms in Plant Pathology - The efforts of committees and individuals who have attempted in the past to provide widely acceptable definitions of terms commonly used in plant pathology have achieved only limited success, not necessarily because the definitions have been bad, but because plant pathologists have failed to make good use of them. Several reasons can be suggested; because lists of definitions have generally been published in journals, and have to be sought amongst remote back-numbers; because some definitions have been so terse that the proper limits of their applicability have not always been clear; because of valid differences of opinion between schools of thought, and of conflicting definitions in different lists; through lack of awareness that such lists exist, and through failure to appreciate that precision in the communication of facts and ideas is no less important than precision of observation and experimentation. pop (Added: 16-Apr-1999 Hits: 842)
