SK Home Matteo Carandini Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute 2318 Fillmore Street San Francisco, CA 94115 Research M y main interest is the early visual system and and how it does what it does. In particular, I study the lateral geniculate neurons (LGN) and the primary visual cortex (V1). These are the two brain structures that connect the eyes to the portion of cerebral cortex that deals with vision. We try to understand how LGN and V1 are wired up and to find simple mathematical expressions to describe their output. A measure of success for our research is whether we can predict the responses of neurons in the early visual system to arbitrary, complex visual stimuli. For example, look at the responses of an LGN neuron to a cartoon To find out more about this line of research, check out the symposium on neural responses to complex stimuli that I organized in January 2003. The tools that we employ are mainly neurophysiological, with some help from psychophysics and modeling. In the lab we perform neurophysiology experiments using multi-electrode extracellular recordings. We also perform imaging experiments using voltage-sensitive dyes One of my longstanding interests is pattern adaptation, which is always a good excuse to show a

2004 Nobel Prize to:
  • Richard Axel
  • Linda B. Buck
4 October 2004 The 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Richard Axel and Linda B. Buck for discoveries concerning "odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system." Axel is University Professor at Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons and Buck is currently a Member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Their work has increased our understanding of the sense of smell in mammals, including the diversity of odorant receptors and the mechanisms by which we experience one of our most complex senses in an orderly fashion. In many mammals, there are about one thousand odorant receptor molecules, each a member of the same family of membrane proteins but distinct in their odorant specificity. Axel and Buck identified this gene familyforming about three percent of the genomeand found that each olfactory receptor cell in the nasal epithelium expresses only one of the thousand genes. Each receptor responds to a selective set of odors, and combinations of receptor activity account for our ability to sense many distinct odors. Additional work by Axel and Buck showed that these genes also control connections the sensory cells make on neural way stationsthe glomeruliwhich display similar specificity.
