What's New
- Kinetics and metabolism of lipoproteins and lipids at all levels of biological organization from cells to humans will again be the theme of this year's KinMet meeting to be held as an unofficial satellite meeting of the ATVB meeting this spring in Washington, DC. Details including the current state of the program are on the KinMet2005 page. MABS Study Section - A new NIH study section devoted to modeling an analysis of biological systems has been formed. It is managed by Malgorzata Klosek who is very aware of the issues surrounding modeling grants and whom you might want to know. This new study section is chaired by Rai Winslow from Johns Hopkins. Drs. Malgorzata and Winslow have recruited an impressive roster of biological modeling expertise. Definitely worth looking into.

Medical Information Access
Patients and medical professionals need easy access to vast quantities of medical information. The amount of information in the primary medical literature alone is overwhelming. MEDLINE, an on-line repository of medical abstracts, contains more than 8.6 million bibliographic entries from over 3800 current biomedical journals and adds 31,000 new entries each month. To help people make effective use of this information, researchers in medical information access are developing new techniques to:
  • automatically organize documents retrieved from a search visualize groups of documents among multiple dimmensions integrate information from a variety of sources

Research on Genomics, Structure, Expression
Comparative genomics is our first focus. Much of this work is encapsulated in the GeneCensus system, which presents various statistical comparisons of the genomes sequenced so far. Our genomics work rests on the utilization of a library of aligned cores for the ~400 currently known protein folds, the basic "partlist" in nature. Datamining expression datasets and other functional genomics information is a second major focus of the lab. We do detailed analysis on them that is closely coupled to the comparative genomics work. Macromolecular motions is our third focus. To further analyze the variability of each of the folds in the protein partslist, we have developed a database system for collecting motions and measuring structural variability.
