166. The Catalyst - Permaculture
Article describes the permaculture philosophy, outlines its history, and discusses prospects for its future. From Catalyst, a student magazine at Brown University.
http://www.brown.edu/Students/Catalyst/pre2001/archive/spring99/pm.html
text more text One group of these individuals has developed a method of self-sustained living known as permaculture . Unlike many other methods of alternative agriculture, permaculture is not simply a method of food production. It is a complete lifestyle with its own overarching set of beliefs that can be applied to every aspect of one’s life. The term "permaculture" was coined in the late 1970s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, authors of the first permaculture manual . These philosophers of science believe that "when we left tribal life, we left with it all guides to sensible behavior in the natural world." They believe that we, as a human race, have forgotten how to "evolve self-regulating systems" and that the widespread destruction caused by our current system of agriculture is clear evidence of this. Mollison and Holmgren sought to design a method through which humans might again live within self-regulating natural systems. These men were not modern "Luddites" who desired to reject all of modern science’s technological advances and return to primitive methods of production. On the contrary, they envisioned a lifestyle in which humans would utilize all of this new scientific understanding and their own commonsense to create small systems of food production which would simulate natural ecosystems and be individually tailored to suit the situation of each household. In this type of system the primary concerns would not be mass production and economics but "people care" and "earth care." Because successful permaculture requires great inputs of knowledge of natural systems, creativity, and expertise in a number of different areas, the ideal of "people care" encourages individuals to share both their crop yield and their knowledge and talents. "People care" also encompasses the ideal that, just as an individual should care for the earth, the earth should care and provide for that individual. Each permaculture system is thus developed and personally tailored to suit the needs and desires of the individuals for which it provides.

A Report on Genetically Engineered Crops
Revised April 2003
Charles M. Rader
This report is about two closely related subjects. One subject is the considerations for and against genetic engineering of our food. This part of the report will quickly reveal my personal bias in favor of engineering, but I have tried to fairly represent the problems as well as the benefits. The other topic is more important. Genetic engineering gets to the very core of how life works and people are inclined to have very strong feelings about it. Because the public knows so very little about science, some opponents of transgenic agriculture have been able to spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion. As Donna Shalala told a group of scientists, speaking about genetic engineering, ``My concern is if we don't have a broadly educated public ... that charlatans out there will be able to play on public fears.'' Exactly that has happened. Almost everything the general public has been told about genetic engineering of food has originated in the deceptive presentations by skilled propagandists.

172. Sebring Florida Agriculture
A description of agricultural activities in the Sebring and Highlands County areas. Includes information on citrus fruit orchards, beef cattle and dairy cattle farming.
http://www.sebringflchamber.com/Agriculture.htm
The primary source of economic activity in Highlands County is agriculture. Within that category, most of the economic activity comes from citrus, cattle and dairy operations. Presently the third largest county in Florida for growing citrus, Highlands County is the fourth largest total citrus producer and the largest producer of the ever-popular Valencia orange in Florida. The recent growing season produced more than 26 million, 90-pound boxes of oranges, enough to produce nearly 40 million gallons of juice. The citrus industry employs between 2,500-3,000 people on a year-round full time basis; a number that nearly doubles during the harvesting season which begins in October and ends in May. Growers are constantly researching new ways to harvest fruit safely and efficiently that minimizes handling and enhances the product between the tree and consumer. Table grade citrus is taken to packing houses in the area for shipment to market. The rest of the fruit is taken to several juice processing plants in the area for ultimate distribution to a national and international market. Information from the State of Florida indicates that statewide production of citrus results in more than an $8 billion annual economic impact, and in Highlands County it is estimated that citrus accounts for more than $200 million in annual economic benefits to the area.
