TRIGONOMETRY
During this tutorial you will be asked to perform calculations involving trigonometric functiions. You will need a calulator to proceed.
Panel 1 The purpose of this tutorial is to review with you the elementary properties of the trigonometric functions. Facility with this subject is essential to success in all branches of science, and you are strongly urged to review and practice the concepts presented here until they are mastered. Let us consider the right-angle triangle shown in Panel 1. The angle at C is a right angle and the angle at A we will call q . The lengths of the sides of the triangle we will denote as p, q and r. From your elementary geometry, you know several things about this triangle. For example, you know the Pythagorean relation,
hypotenuse , is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. We know other things. For example, we know that if the lengths of the three sides of any triangle p, q and r are specified, then the whole triangle is determined, angles included. If you think about this for a moment, you will see it is correct. If I give you three sticks of fixed length and told you to lay them down in a triangle, there's only one triangle which you could make. What we would like to have is a way of relating the angles in the triangle, say q , to the lengths of the sides.

Grades Eight Though Twelve - Mathematics Content Standards. Trigonometry uses the techniques that students have previously learned from the study of algebra and geometry. The trigonometric functions studied are defined geometrically rather than in terms of algebraic equations. Facility with these functions as well as the ability to prove basic identities regarding them is especially important for students intending to study calculus, more advanced mathematics, physics and other sciences, and engineering in college. Students understand the notion of angle and how to measure it, in both degrees and radians. They can convert between degrees and radians. Students know the definition of sine and cosine as y- and x- coordinates of points on the unit circle and are familiar with the graphs of the sine and cosine functions. Students know the identity cos (x) + sin (x) = 1: 3.1 Students prove that this identity is equivalent to the Pythagorean theorem (i.e., students can prove this identity by using the Pythagorean theorem and, conversely, they can prove the Pythagorean theorem as a consequence of this identity).

About 9 pages (2,658 words) Trigonometry Summary
Trigonometry Trigonometry is a branch of applied mathematics concerned with the relationship between angles and their sides and the calculations based on them. First developed as a branch of geometry focusing on triangles during the third century B.C., trigonometry was used extensively for astronomical measurements. The major trigonometric functions , including sine cosine , and tangent, were first defined as ratios of sides in a right triangle . Since trigonometric functions are intrinsically related, they can be used to determine the dimensions of any triangle given limited information. In the eighteenth century, the definitions of trigonometric functions were broadened by being defined as points on a unit circle . This allowed the development of graphs of functions related to the angles they represent which were periodic. Today, using the periodic nature of trigonometric functions, mathematicians and scientists have developed mathematical models to predict many natural periodic phenomena.

Elementary-Geometry Trigonometry
Abstract
From the inner (dot) product, employing the synthetic method, in this online textbook, we develop the elementary geometries (including the trigonometry), in a pseudo-metrizable topology. The hyperbolic and circular trigonometric functions on a complex space are defined in terms of the exponential function. Their inverses are obtained. The addition theorems are presented and inverted. The derivatives, integrals, and infinite expansions are obtained. The Raphson, Newton, and Horner methods of finding the roots of an equation are presented. The binomial theorem and Gamma function are presented, also. Synthetic Geometry does not employ a coordinate system; it develops the congruence and similarity theorems. Analytic Geometry employs coordinate systems. It is happy to make use of the congruence or similarity theorems; but usually does not prove them. We employ the Synthetic Geometry, exclusively. The same distinction may be made between Analytic Vector Analysis vs.

Introduction to Trigonometry
How steep is this hillside and will it fail? How high is that mountain? These sorts of questions pop up all over in geosciences - from plate tectonics to maps to ocean waves, and they require you to find either an angle or a distance. To do this, we often use trigonometry, which is much easier when a right triangle is involved. A right triangle (like the one in the figure to the right) has one angle that is 90 . The other two angles are always less than 90 and together add up to 90 . Note that the triangle on the right has 3 angles a, b and c and 3 sides, A, B, and H, and 3 angles a, b, and c. The side "opposite" an angle (in this case) is labeled with a capital letter corresponding to the label on the angle. The side opposite the right angle, H, is always the longest side and is called the hypotenuse.
Some rules/guidelines for trigonometry of right triangles
Because the trigonometric functions come up over and over, it is a good idea to figure out a way to remember their definitions. For most students (and, to be honest, your professors!) the mnemonic SOH-CAH-TOA (said "so-kah-toe-ahh") is helpful.

When solving trigonometric expressions like sine, cosine and tangent, it is very important to realize that Excel uses radians, not degrees to perform these calculations! If the angle is in degrees you must first convert it to radians. There are two easy ways to do this.
  • Recall that p p PI( )/180
  • Excel has a built-in function known as RADIANS(angle) where angle You can use the DEGREES(angle) function to convert radians into degrees. For example, DEGREES(PI( ) ) equals 180. Excel uses several built-in trig functions. Those that you will use most often are displayed in the table below. Note that the arguements for the SIN( ), COS( ) and TAN( ) functions are, by default, radians . Also, the functions ASIN( ), ACOS( ) and ATAN( ) return values in terms of radians . (When working with degrees, you will need to properly use the DEGREES( ) and RADIANS( ) functions to convert to the correct unit.) Mathematical

Trigonometry arose in ancient times out of attempts to measure the lengths of various lines associated with circles . For example, consider this diagram showing the upper right quadrant with a unit circle The point , external to the circle with center , determines a unique secant and two tangent lines of equal length, one of which is . It thus also uniquely determines an angle . The trigonometric functions and simply measure the ratio of the lengths of the secant and tangent lines to the radius of the circle. Thus, in the diagram, . But triangles and are obviously similar , so is also equal to , and we recover the usual current-day definition of . Similarly, from the diagram

    trigonometry
At its simplest level, trigonometry deals with the relationships between the sides and angles of triangles. Unknown angles or lengths are calculated by using trigonometrical ratios such as sine, cosine, and tangent. The earliest applications of trigonometry were in the fields of navigation, surveying, and astronomy, and usually involved working out an inaccessible distance such as the distance of the Earth from the Moon. Branch of mathematics that concerns finding lengths and angles in triangles sine cosine , and tangent . Trigonometry is used frequently in navigation, surveying, and simple harmonic motion in physics. Using trigonometry, it is possible to calculate the lengths of the sides and the sizes of the angles of a right-angled triangle as long as one angle and the length of one side are known, or the lengths of two sides. The longest side, which is always opposite to the right angle, is called the
