Declarative Analytic Geometry
Submitted by ilee on Mon, 2006-03-20 18:50. Category Download this model Run this model
WHAT IS IT?
This model demonstrates an agent-based technique for plotting the curve of an equation. While this is not a typical StarLogo application (or even a typical agent-based application), it serves as an example of how turtles with very simple behaviors can participate in a complicated math-based model, with minimal control by observer code. More specifically, this model demonstrates a simple, non-calculus-based approach to goal-seeking (e.g. optimization or root-finding) with turtles: here, the turtles are trying to minimize their absolute deviation from a specified function value.
HOW IT WORKS
In the traditional, procedural method for plotting graphs that is usually taught to students, we iterate across some set of X values, compute the Y value for each X, plot each (X, Y) pair on a grid, and draw a more or less smooth curve connecting the plotted points. In contrast, this model uses agents that wander around, in a semi-directed fashion, until their coordinates satisfy the specified equation (within a given tolerance); when this happens, the turtle marks the patch on which it is standing, and then dies. The procedural approach works well when it is easy to isolate one variable on one side of the equation; when this is not possible, a declarative approach (like the one used in this model) can be simpler - even if it requires more steps.

Analytic Geometry Final Exam (Final Exam for Math 142) Deadline date: Friday May 9 Material covered : sections 9.1-3, 10.1-5, and 10.7 Format : The exam is an online exam, similar to the unit exams. You will have two hours to complete the exam, and it counts 75 points toward your final grade. There are 32 questions, each worth 1, 2, or 3 points. The exam is closed book and closed notes, and you will not be provided with any formulas. You should arrange with your proctor to take the exam by the deadline date above. You may take the exam earlier if you wish. Be sure to arrange for a two hour block of time. At the end of the exam, you will be able to see your score, but you will not be able to immediately view the individual questions to see which ones you missed. However, after the deadline date is passed, you will be able to go back and look over your exam in detail. Unlike the unit exams, you are only allowed to take the Analytic Geometry Final Exam twice

by Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar (Purdue University)
This book provides, for use in a graduate course or for self-study by graduate students, a well-motivated treatment of several topics, especially the following: (1) algebraic treatment of several complex variables; (2) geometric approach to algebraic geometry via analytic sets; (3) survey of local algebra; (4) survey of sheaf theory. The book has been written in the spirit of Weierstrass. Power series play the dominant role. The treatment, being algebraic, is not restricted to complex numbers, but remains valid over any complete-valued field. This makes it applicable to situations arising from number theory. When it is specialized to the complex case, connectivity and other topological properties come to the fore. In particular, via singularities of analytic sets, topological fundamental groups can be studied. In the transition from punctual to local, i.e. from properties at a point to properties near a point, the classical work of Osgood plays an important role. This gives rise to normic forms and the concept of the Osgoodian. Following Serre, the passage from local to global properties of analytic spaces is facilitated by introducing sheaf theory. Here the fundamental results are the coherence theorems of Oka and Cartan. They are followed by theory normalization due to Oka and Zariski in the analytic and algebraic cases, respectively.

A branch of geometry. The fundamental concepts of analytic geometry are the simplest geometric elements (points, straight lines, planes, second-order curves and surfaces). The principal means of study in analytic geometry are the method of coordinates and the methods of elementary algebra. The genesis of the method of coordinates is closely linked with the intense development of astronomy, mechanics and technology in the 17th century R. Descartes ) gave a clear and exhaustive account of this method and of the foundations of analytic geometry. P. Fermat , a contemporary of Descartes, was also familiar with the principles of this method. Subsequent development of analytic geometry is due to the studies of G. Leibniz I. Newton and, particularly, L. Euler . The tools of analytic geometry were utilized by J.L. Lagrange in his construction of analytic mechanics and by G. Monge in differential geometry. In our own days, analytic geometry has no significance as an independent branch of science, but its methods are extensively employed in various fields of mathematics, mechanics, physics and other sciences. The principle of the method of coordinates is as follows. Consider, for example, two mutually-perpendicular straight lines

Investigation of geometric objects using coordinate system s. Because was the first to apply algebra to geometry, it is also known as Cartesian geometry. It springs from the idea that any point in two-dimensional space can be represented by two numbers and any point in three-dimensional space by three. Because lines, circles, spheres, and other figures can be thought of as collections of points in space that satisfy certain equations, they can be explored via equations and formulas rather than graphs. Most of analytic geometry deals with the conic section s. Because these are defined using the notion of fixed distance, each section can be represented by a general equation derived from the distance formula document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "analytic geometry" from Britannica Concise conic section - Any two-dimensional curve traced by the intersection of a right circular cone with a plane. hyperbola - Curve with two separate branches, one of the conic sections.
