Venus Williams ended Maria Sharapova's title defence and booked her own place in the final with a 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 win.
Williams broke first to take a 4-2 lead in a gripping opener but Sharapova responded with some fine groundstrokes to break back and force the tie-break. The two-time champion raced 3-0 ahead as Sharapova mistimed her shots and went on to win a fantastic first set. Sharapova gifted Williams a break at 1-0 in the second, and the American broke twice more to roar to the final. Well done Venus! It looks like she is back to her best
From Lil Have your say on Five Live Williams will either face Amelie Mauresmo or Lindsay Davenport for the title after the other semi-final was suspended because of rain. Sharapova had bettered Williams in their two previous head-to-heads and forced the American to fight off two break-points in the very first game.

Venus Williams also won the title in 2000 and 2001 Venus Williams became Wimbledon champion for the third time with an epic win over Lindsay Davenport in the longest-ever women's final.
The American regained the title she won in 2000 and 2001 with a 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 9-7 victory over the world number one. Davenport served for the match at 6-5 in the second but was broken, and had a match point in the third. But Williams kept fighting and, as Davenport struggled with a back strain, broke in game 15 to win in 2hrs 45min. Williams went into the match on the back of a stunning win over defending champion Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals but could not repeat that form early on. Davenport was soon 5-2 ahead and held her nerve to serve out despite losing one of the breaks.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Williams, Venus , born in 1980, American professional tennis player, who boasts one of the fastest serves in the history of women’s professional tennis at more than 200 km/h (125 mph). Venus and her sister, Serena Williams , make up one of the most successful tennis families in the sport’s history. Venus Williams was born in Lynwood, California, and spent much of her childhood in nearby Compton, just outside Los Angeles. She began playing tennis at age four with the coaching of her father, Richard. At the age of ten Venus was the 12-and-under girls’ champion for southern California. In the early 1990s Venus and her family moved to Florida so that she and Serena could receive more advanced coaching. Many coaches and observers believed Venus could be a teenage tennis superstar, but Richard decided to limit the number of tournaments his daughters played. He cited other cases in which girls had become teenage tennis stars only to burn out early. Although she turned professional at 14 in 1994, Venus continued to play in just a few tournaments a year while focusing on her schoolwork.

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
STANFORD, Calif. Kim Clijsters' best chance to finally win her first Grand Slam tournament might come at next month's U.S. Open. Advertisement She's been unstoppable on American soil, all those nagging injuries that bothered her in the last year are healed, and many of her top opponents have health problems of their own. Clijsters broke serve six times and took advantage of Venus Williams' erratic game to beat the Wimbledon champion 7-5, 6-2 for the Bank of the West Classic title Sunday. "I think I've played very good in the past when I've made Grand Slam finals," Clijsters said. "I'm working hard to give myself another chance of hopefully reaching another Grand Slam final. We'll see." The fourth-seeded Clijsters defeated Williams for only the third time in nine meetings and ended a three-match losing streak to the 25-year-old American, earning her third championship in this event and fourth tournament victory of the season. For Clijsters, it wasn't all about beating Williams, but more about the state of her game.
