CARSON, Calif. Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams withdrew from the JPMorgan Chase Open on Friday. Advertisement Davenport, the world's No. 1 player, is still bothered by the low back strain she originally sustained at Wimbledon. Williams, ranked fourth, is sidelined with a left ankle injury that has kept her out of her last two WTA Tour events. "We understand the need for each of them to focus on recovering from their recent injuries," tournament director Bill Peterson said. Davenport defeated Williams 6-1, 6-3 to win last year's title. "I feel this is my hometown tournament and one in which I have always looked forward to playing," Davenport said in a statement. "My back is just not ready yet for competition." Williams won consecutive titles at the tournament in 1999 and 2000. The top seeds for the tournament, which begins Monday, will be Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova, Vera Zvonareva, Kim Clijsters, Mary Pierce and Elena Likhovtseva.

Executive summary: Totally Hot Tennis Player Serena Williams is a world-ranked professional tennis player, one of very few African-Americans to dominate that sport. Her sister Venus Williams is also a top-ranked player. Serena is three inches shorter, 25 pounds lighter, and a year younger than Venus. Their father, Richard Williams, has coached and, some say, harangued the girls since childhood or even earlier. He says he was watching tennis on TV in 1978, and when he saw how much prize money could be won, he decided on the spot that tennis winnings could be his family's path to success. He started talking his wife already the mother of three girls from a previous marriage into having more children. Venus and Serena trained at tennis courts in rough Compton, California, and their father has said that gang members "watched over the girls," not as predators but as protectors, as they played and practiced. The family left California for Florida in 1991, as Venus and Serena began to dominate junior tennis competition. Serena turned professional in 1995, at age 14. By 1997, she was ranked #304 in the world when she defeated two Top 10 players and jumped to #102. She cracked the top 100 in 1998, after defeating #2 Lindsay Davenport in Sydney, and won her first career title at the Open Gaz de France in 1999. After that she won

    Serena Williams
Born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan, United States Tennis player, Olympic athlete, actor Ranked Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on September 26, 1981, but she and her sister were raised in the economically depressed and often violence-riddled Los Angeles suburb of Compton. Her father, Richard Williams, ran a private security firm, and her mother Oracene (who often uses the name Brandy) was a nurse. A fan of televised tennis, Richard Williams dreamed of the opportunities that might await his offspring-to-be: "I went to my wife and said, 'Let's have kids and make them tennis players,'" he told Newsweek . Venus, born in 1980, and Serena, the youngest daughter, showed promise from the start. "Venus and Serena took to tennis as soon as rackets were put in their hands," older sister Lyndrea told Sport magazine. Early Career Marked By Father's Direction The sisters' early training took place on public tennis courts in and around Compton, where they remember having to duck gunfire. Despite this difficult beginning, though, their skills developed rapidly. Serena entered her first tournament at the age of four and a half, and over the next five years, her father has claimed, she won 46 of 49 tournaments she entered. She succeeded Venus as the number-one player in southern California's highly competitive age-12-and-under rankings, and well before reaching adolescence both sisters had attracted national attention in the form of invitations to prestigious tennis camps, promises of lucrative product-endorsement deals, and glowing newspaper reportage.

Susan Mullane/Camerawork USA Fans say: Leave the sisters alone. I have read several of your articles, and the way you refer to the Williams' sisters shows very clear that you personally have no liking for them. Try not to let your personal feelings show in the articles you write. Karlene Campbell It seems to me the article about the Williams sisters "Mysterious Serena and Venus are falling back to the pack" (or spoiled success?) was wrote more by a suffered fan than by a serious and objective journalist (as I see you).
There have been many other cases of tennis players who have declined (Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, etc.) and the press has not been so hard on them. Why this attention with Venus and Serena? The recent failure of the Williams sisters, although painful, is not the end of the women's game .

serena williams biography - part 1 menu Serena Williams has become one of the most exciting and closely watched players in tennis. Alongside Venus, her older sister, she forms half of a prodigal tennis pairing that has been stealing headlines for all the right reasons. CLICK HERE TO BET ON WIMBLEDON 2002 Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on the 26th September, 1981, the youngest of 5 sisters. Richard and Oracene Williams raised their family in Compton, a violent Los Angeles suburb. Serena's father was very keen for his daughters to become professional tennis players, and so encouraged the young sisters to start playing from an early age. Her early training took place on Compton's public tennis courts, where despite the social problems, her skills quickly developed. Serena was four and a half when she entered her first tournament. Richard Williams claims that she then proceded to win 46 of the next 49 tournaments she entered as a junior. Even as a child she received national press coverage and promises of lucrative product-endorsement deals. In 1991 her father took the unusual decision to withdraw both Serena and Venus from tournaments, hoping to shield them from competitive and possibly racial problems.
