Search Tennis Andre and Serena Win Indian Wells Dateline: 03/18/01 Andre Agassi's groundstrokes and Indian Wells, California's desert sun were eventually too much for Pete Sampras in Sunday's final. Agassi won 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-1. Sampras was up 5-4 with a set point for the first set when he missed a relatively easy forehand, one of his 49 unforced errors in a match in which Agassi committed only 10. Sampras's most conspicuous errors throughout came from his forehand side, in part because he was trying to outhit Agassi from the baseline. His staying back more than usual attests to the strength of Agassi's passing shots and especially his return of serve, which is the best in the game. This was Agassi's first title at Indian Wells in 13 tries. Sampras has won it twice. Agassi is closing the gap in their head-to-head record, which Sampras leads 17-13. Adding Indian Wells, the first Masters Series event of the year, to his Australian Open win in January, Agassi is showing every indication that he will have an incredible year. Sampras hasn't won a title since last year's Wimbledon, but he is encouraged by his play at Indian Wells after a couple of months of disappointing results.

Serena grabs sister's Wimbledon title
Serena Williams has won her first Wimbledon title LONDON, England Serena Williams is the new Wimbledon ladies champion after beating her sister and defending title-holder Venus. The younger Williams sister triumphed 7-6 6-3 to end Venus' hopes of becoming the first woman since Steffi Graf to win the title three times in a row. ( Match report "It was now or never because I was playing the two-times champion," said Serena, 20. "It's hard to beat Venus here. "I definitely really was fighting in the first set, and played well in the tiebreak. She played well and wouldn't stop running the ball down." Venus, 22, conceded defeat graciously but still spoke of her fondness for the tournament. NEARLY 15 years ago, an unknown father stood on a crumbling tennis court in Compton, Calif., and told his little daughter Venus that she was going to be one of the best tennis players in the world. This was a bold prediction, for the father was a neighborhood tennis coach and he knew that the odds of this happening were astronomical. After all, no Black person had dominated the game of tennis since Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in 1975, and no Black woman had won a major tournament since Althea Gibson won the U.S. championships and Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958.

http://www.who2.com/serenawilliams.html
SERENA WILLIAMS Tennis Player Serena and her sister Venus Williams became stars of women's tennis in the late 1990s. The sisters were African-Americans, then a rarity in pro tennis, and quickly became known for their powerful games and flashy outfits. Like Tiger Woods , Serena and Venus were child prodigies who began playing their chosen game before kindergarten. Serena is a year younger than Venus and (at 5'10") about three inches shorter, but she was the first sister to win a major tournament by claiming the singles title at the 1999 U.S. Open. Serena went on to become the dominant women's tennis player of the early 2000s; in 2002-03 she won the "Serena slam" by holding all four grand slam titles at once: the 2002 French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles, and the 2003 Australian Open.

Sore ankle fails to slow Serena
Star 'working on playing through the pain'
WIMBLEDON NOTEBOOK WIMBLEDON, England - Nursing a sore ankle, Serena Williams said she was unsure until last week whether she would play at Wimbledon. Now she's into the third round, and perhaps one win from another sibling showdown. Williams dropped the first set for the second match in a row but rallied to beat qualifier Mara Santangelo 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday. Venus Williams also won, and the sisters, both two-time champions, could meet in the fourth round. Serena Williams was sidelined for six weeks by a sore ankle before entering Wimbledon. On Thursday, she said for the first time that the injury was a slight fracture. "I'm working on playing through the pain," she said. "Some days it feels good. In general, as long as I tape it, it's OK. But I have to have pretty heavy taping on it." Williams said she made a late decision to play. "I was like, 'Oh, I'm not sure if I'm going to go,"' she said. "Every day I was like that until my flight came on Tuesday and I was on it: 'Guess I'm going to Wimbledon."'

Serena Williams says a menstrual-related migraine cost her a tennis match last year
WEB EXCLUSIVE By By Jennifer Barrett Newsweek May 10 - Serena Williams was 18 when she was stricken with the first of several excruciating headaches. But she didn't learn that she was suffering from menstrual migraines until five years later, when a sudden and severe headache cost the tennis star a match and prompted an early elimination from a tournament for the first time in her professional career. According to the National Headache Foundation, an estimated 13 million American women are affected by this type of migraine, but most of them don't realize it. While menstrual migraines can be particularly painful, they are also somewhat easier to treat because patients can use migraine medicines more aggressively than if they had to take them all the time. Williams has signed on as spokesperson of the new National Menstrual Migraine Coalition, formed by the National Headache Foundation with funding by Endo Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures Frova, the migraine medication Williams has been taking with good results since last fall. The group recently launched the "Rally for Menstrual Migraine" campaign in an effort to help women recognize the symptoms and encourage them to talk to their physicians about available

The famous tennis players Venus and Serena Williams are very proud of their reality series on the ABC Family network, which they describe as different from all the other follow-the-celebrities reality shows.
The great event will be reflected in the final episode of the series. The reality show follows the Williams sister in their training, playing and living their daily lives in a more reserved and inspirational way then “The Osbornes” for example.
"We consider ourselves role models," Serena said on Friday. The sister believe they were “a perfect match with ABC Family, even down to the name. It's ABC Family. We're the Williams sisters. We're a really close family.”
"We're working girls” and “we do not take days off. We're fighting.... I think this show is going to show that element of how hard we work. And it's going to show when you lift the Wimbledon trophy, what it really takes - and then all the drama in between."
“What we have is our reputation, who we are, and what we've been taught. And I want my mom and dad to be proud of me, and I think they'll be very proud to have this show on ABC Family as the right venue for us”, Venus added

Out-of-sorts Serena Williams missed out on a fourth-round meeting with sister Venus after suffering a shock exit in the fading light against Jill Craybas.
An early break earned Craybas a 2-0 lead. The pair then traded breaks over the next six games but Craybas held in the ninth to seal the first set 6-3. The duo traded breaks twice in the second but though Williams edged ahead 5-6, Craybas forced the tie-break. And the unseeded outsider took it 7-4 to reach round four for the first time. Williams has recently been dogged by ankle problems and in mid-May she completely withdrew from the competitive scene and skipped the French Open. She then returned at the start of last week after taking a late decision to tackle Wimbledon, but struggled through her first two matches against lowly-ranked players.

Maria thanks mystery man More photos from the final Maria Sharapova produced a remarkable display of power and poise to upset Serena Williams and win her first Wimbledon crown.
Williams was expected to make it a hat-trick of titles, but a stunned Centre Court crowd watched as she was overpowered 6-1 6-4 by the 17-year-old. Sharapova, in her first Grand Slam final, took the first set in 30 minutes. Williams was a break up in a compelling second set, but Sharapova found another level to take her first Grand Slam. Sharapova, the first Russian woman to win the Wimbledon title, sank to her knees as her victory was confirmed and then climbed to the players' box to hug her father. "It's unreal," she told BBC Sport after collecting the trophy.
