THE SCOOP, ROLAND GARROS DAY 4 Hingis on Williams sisters' side in doubles controversy By Sandra Harwitt
tennisreporters.net While the tennis world is in something of an uproar about the Williams sisters withdrawing from the doubles draw here at Roland Garros, world No. 1 Martina Hingis brushed aside all the fuss about the maneuver. This attitude is something of a departure for Hingis, who in the past has been quick to criticize the sisters whenever an opportunity would arise. According to Hingis, who made sure to note that the withdrawal announcement came from Serena because she wanted to concentrate on playing singles, it is also perfectly understandable why Venus would want to hightail it out of town after her embarrassing first-round loss. "Well, if you lose first round, I think you don't want to stay around much longer," Hingis said, speaking from experience, recalling when she was upset by Jelena Dokic in the first round of Wimbledon in 1999. "I've done that at Wimbledon. I just went home because you just want to leave. You don't want to stick around and just watch everyone else."

71. ASB BANK CLASSIC
ASB BANK CLASSIC, New Zealands premiere womens tennis tournament. but crowdfavourite dominique van roost of Belgium needs three hours to defeat Silvia
http://www.aucklandtennis.co.nz/asb_bank_classic/history.html
The first event was held on December 10-15, 1985, on grass, but was included as part of the 1986 WTA year. The main singles draw was a field of 16 with Kiwi Belinda Cordwell seeded No 1. Unfortunately, she lost in the first round to qualifier Stephanie Faulkner. The event was won by fourth-seeded Briton Anne Hobbs, who beat Australian Louise Field 6-3 6-1. Hobbs also took the doubles title with American Candy Reynolds. Cordwell and Julie Richardson were doubles semifinalists.
The 1987 $US50,000 tournament was played on hardcourt with a 64-player main draw. American Gretchen Magers delayed her honeymoon with a late decision to play in the Nutri-Metics International and emerged with the singles title, defeating 22nd-ranked Terry Phelps 6-2 6-3 in the final. Good news for tournament organisers was seeing Julie Richardson and Anna Maria Fernandez recover from a set down to defeat the top combination of Magers and Liz Minter 4-6 6-4 6-2 for the doubles crown. Nine New Zealanders featured in the singles main draw - Cordwell, Richardson, Tracey King, Amanda Tate, Liz Daly, Michelle Parun, Brenda Perry, Ruth Seeman and Claudine Toleafoa. Richardson made the third round before falling to doubles partner Fernandez in straight sets.
Pint-sized American Patty Fendick beat lanky Englishwoman Sara Gomer 6-3 7-6 for $US12,000 singles purse, with the best of the four Kiwis - Ruth Seeman and Belinda Cordwell - both reaching the third round.

Olympic Tennis Medalists
History
Lawn tennis, as it was then known, was an Olympic sport from 1896 to 1924, although the women's singles and mixed doubles events were first played in 1900 and women's doubles wasn't added until 1920. In 1908 and 1912, there was competition both indoors and outdoors. The sport was dropped from the Olympics after 1924. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 and became a medal sport again in 1988. A single-elimination tournament determines medal placings. The top 16 players are seeded in singles, the top eight teams in doubles. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992, semfinal losers shared bronze medals. In all other years, they've had a playoff match for the medal. Top of page

74. Patri's Journal: Europe '98
I am going to babble a lot about Wimbledon and tennis now, so if you don t Sanchez Vicario beat dominique van roost 2 sets to one in the first match.
http://patrifriedman.com/writing/journal/europe98/12wimble.html
Boy, Trafalgar Square really does have a lot of pigeons! Date: 7/2/98 On Tuesday, I arose at the obscene hour of 9AM, my body refusing to sleep longer. I made it to breakfast at my hotel for the first (and what has so far been the only) time during my stay in London. I then wandered to Wimbledon, arriving around 10:45 or 11. There were vast crowds, and I didn't think I had much chance, figuring the die hard fans would have been there for hours already. It turned out, thanks to providence, that the gates had only opened at 10:30 - great! Getting a ticket turned out to be quite easy, if you were willing to shell out $60, so I did. I am going to babble a lot about Wimbledon and tennis now, so if you don't care about such things, prepare to skip a lot. Don't worry, I will talk about expensive lettuce and the two german girls who were definitely not 19 later. For those of you not familiar with the layout of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (also known as "Wimbledon"), there are two main courts surrounded by stadium style seating: Centre Court and Court 1. Court 2 also has a fair amount of seating. These 3 courts had most of the important matches (I think all the mens and womens singles happened there), and there were lots of other courts for things like the Boys and Girls championship, doubles, the over 35 groups, and so forth. On the smaller courts, you were right next to the action, with an amazing view. Even in the stadiums, you could see the action perfectly well.

Favorite tournament match: Schofield's favorite match was Amy Frazier's quarterfinal upset victory over top-seeded Martina Hingis at the 2000 Acura Classic.
