MEN'S FIRST-ROUND 2-ANDY RODDICK (USA) vs. SCOVILLE JENKINS (USA) Thus begins Roddick's defense of his US Open title and without question, he'll put up tremendous resistance. Last year, Roddick came into the Open as the hottest player on the planet, not having lost a match on the summer hard-court circuit. While Roddick has played well in US Open Series tournaments this summer, he's only won one title (Indianapolis) and lost crucial matches in Toronto and Cincinnati to rivals Roger Federer and Agassi. Then, at the Olympics, Fernando Gonzalez punched him out. But the good thing about Roddick this year is that he almost never loses early and puts himself in the thick of every tournament. He's nearly unbreakable to players outside of the top 30 and has improved his all-around game. He's really just been a few volleys and backhands away from a few more titles. Jenkins hails from Atlanta and earned his wild card by winning the USTA Boys' 18 National Championships in Kalamazoo. Said to be an aggressive all-around player, Jenkins will get a quick introduction to the big stage when he faces Roddick in Ashe Stadium. The kid may have a bright future, but his prospects look dim in this contest. Once a US Open junior champion himself, Roddick will take no mercy and send Jenkins scurrying to the outer courts waiting for the boys' draw to begin next week. JAN-MICHAEL GAMBILL (USA) vs. RAJEEV RAM (USA)

Three years and nine months old … kids are learning colors, numbers, the alphabet, maybe a bike with training wheels … or working on their backhand and forehand. At least that's what Alexandra Stevenson was doing at that age. Alexandra's vocabulary barely caught up with her first volley. The doctors told Ms. Stevenson that Alexandra was a slow speaker because she was working more on her physical development. What may have worried Samantha then has her counting her blessings today. By the time Alexandra was seven she was hitting the courts for practice three times a week. But it was at age eight that her mom realized for the first time how devoted Alexandra was to the game. "I went to pick her up from school and she was bawling and saying some kids had stolen her racket at recess." It wasn't the tears and broken heart that showed her mother how much she loved tennis, but a conversation that came a few nights later. Having been racketless for only a few days, Alexandra convinced her mother to let her clean, take out the garbage and help around the house for a dollar a day. A year and a new racket later, Samantha understood her daughter's staunch commitment.

Alex Livesey, Rick Stewart/Allsport PHILADELPHIA (AP) Julius Erving said Friday he is the father of tennis phenom Alexandra Stevenson, whose run to the Wimbledon semifinals has been shadowed by reports she is the basketball great's daughter. "I acknowledge a relationship with her mother in 1980," Erving told The Associated Press . "My wife, who has known from the beginning, and children are aware of this situation. "All matters concerning Alexandra since her birth have been handled privately through counsel. I am pleased to see Alexandra, at 18, doing so well and I applaud her mother's efforts and courage." Erving said he has met Alexandra Stevenson only once and that it was "her call" about whether they would renew their relationship. He said he has been supporting her financially.

To the delight of hundreds of Tim Henman -iacs who camped out overnight to see their man take on Arnaud Clement, the eighth-seeded Brit advanced in straight sets. Lindsay Davenport was down two breaks in the third set before subduing Elena Likhovtseva. Magui Serna, a bubbly Spaniard with looping strokes, upset third-seeded Mary Pierce Yet the matches of the day were rendered into agate type, dwarfed by the actions and allegations of two of the more notorious tennis parents, Damir Dokic and Samantha Stevenson.

Stevenson begins her comeback
'99 Wimbledon semifinalst has repaired shoulder, optimism
Miles Kennedy / AP file
Alexandra Stevenson returns to the WTA Tour on Saturday in Cincinnati, the start of a journey she hopes will one day lead to a Grand Slam title that seemed so close six years ago and so far now.
Alexandra Stevenson is starting over. With a surgically repaired right shoulder. With an overflowing supply of optimism. And with absolutely none of the ballyhoo that greeted her breakthrough performance at Wimbledon in 1999 or that surrounded the revelation that her father is Julius Erving. About 10 months after having a tennis player's most vital cog fixed, Stevenson returned Saturday to the WTA Tour's fringes, playing with a wild-card invitation in qualifying rounds at a hard-court tournament in Cincinnati. It's a modest step in a journey that Stevenson isn't shy about saying she thinks eventually will lead to a Grand Slam title, something that seemed so close during that glorious fortnight six years ago and seems so far away now. "It's been the hardest thing I think I've ever gone through. Kind of like Martha Stewart said: When you're in prison, no one cares about you, and when you get out, you have to reinvent yourself. I kind of agree with her there - not that I was in prison," Stevenson said, pausing to laugh at her own words.
