POSTED: 11:39 pm EDT August 3, 2005 Washington, DC American James Blake ousted fourth-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek, but Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean and Brit Greg Rusedski both advanced in Wednesday's second-round action at the $600,000 Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Blake, who won this event in 2002, downed Stepanek 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. The eighth-seeded Grosjean disposed of German Alexander Popp 6-2, 6-3, while the 11th-seeded Rusedski handled Australian Nathan Healey 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Other seeds to win included 10th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, 13th-seeded Thai Paradorn Srichaphan and 14th-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela. Srichaphan was the 2002 runner-up to Blake. There were a handful of upsets on Day 3 as fifth-seeded Slovak Dominik Hrbaty, ninth-seeded Chilean Nicolas Massu, 12th-seeded Slovakian Karol Beck and 15th- seeded Brazilian Ricardo Mello all were sent home.

Extraordinary outburst by flag-waving Brit by Ian Ascough English tennis ace Greg Rusedski was today embroiled in a furious war of words campaign with David Graveney, the chairman of selectors for the ECB. Sources close to Rusedski claim the big-server, whose mother is rumoured to have been born in Beeston in Leeds, was agitated at having spent "most of Saturday" at home indoors watching the second day of the First Test against the Australians from Lords. Startled witnesses close to his home said they had been amazed by Rusedski's early-morning outburst. Gasped one shocked onlooker: "He was shouting his head off, eh. Shouting something about there being too many foreigners on the team. It didn't make a lot of sense to us, eh, because you don't get that many people watching cricket in this part of Ontario." Max Clifford was quick to issue a statement defending his client: "Gregorsz was miffed that he wasted much of Saturday watching England's pathetic capitulation against the Aussies when he could have been opening a new children's hospital in Saskatchewan or appearing on Degrassi Junior High. Were it not for the time difference, his entire day would have been, quite literally, ruined."

Greg Rusedski's withdrawal from a tournament in Marseille could have worrying consequences for British Davis Cup hopes.
By Guardian Newspapers, 2/10/2005 With Tim Henman turning his back on the Davis Cup, Britain's captain Jeremy Bates can ill- afford anything happening to Greg Rusedski before the Europe-Africa Group One tie against Israel in Tel Aviv early next month. So there was immediate consternation when Rusedski pulled out of the Marseille tournament yesterday with a rib injury.
Rusedski, ranked No44, does not believe the injury is serious and hopes to play in Rotterdam next week, although that depends on two current entries dropping out.
A rib injury kept Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, the former French Open champion, out for much of last season, and Bates will be anxious that Rusedski does not rush back until he has fully recovered.
Britain must defeat Israel to have an outside chance of returning to the 16-nation elite world group next year.

    Tennis: Greg's got a grudge
GREG Rusedski's acquittal on doping charges is unlikely to bring an end to a controversy which is rocking tennis.
Rusedski became the eighth top player in as many months to be cleared of accountability after testing positive for nandrolone.
The British number two successfully argued that, like those before him, he had received contaminated substances in good faith from the men's tour's governing body, the Association of Tennis Professionals.
And despite being vindicated after a month-long decision process following his hearing in Montreal last month, Rusedski may not consider it to be the end of the matter.
Rusedski's lawyer Mark Gay said: "Mr Rusedski is currently analysing the judgement.
"At the moment his overwhelming sense is one of relief and of course he will be studying the judgement in the days to come.
"The fact is that the ATP have got plenty of thinking to do about this judgement and I am sure the story will develop over the next few days and weeks."

    Tennis: Greg blast at ATP
GREG Rusedski took a swipe at the Association of Tennis Professionals after crashing out of the US Open in the first round.
The British number two was acquitted by a tribunal in March of responsibility for a positive drugs test for nandrolone but saw his world ranking plummet while trying to clear his name.
Rusedski has subsequently found it hard to gain automatic qualification for ATP tournaments, despite being promised assistance by the sport's governing body.
"The situation is that they've done absolutely nothing. It's time for them to do something and give me some help," Rusedski told Radio Five Live.
"With Bohdan Ulihrach (also cleared after initially testing positive), they paid his costs, they gave him wild cards and they sorted him out. With me they've done absolutely nothing.
"I've been nothing but helpful in this situation and done what I can to help, so I'm really disheartened and disappointed and I'd like to see some action finally taken."
Rusedski saw victory taken from his grasp as he lost to Frenchman Cyril Saulnier in a fifth-set tie-break at Flushing Meadow.

    Rusedski overpowered by Karlovic
Greg Rusedski lost in straight sets to Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the third round of the ATP Washington Classic. The 6ft 10ins Karlovic won 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to secure his first win in three meetings with Rusedski. Karlovic hit 14 aces and will now play top seed Andy Roddick in Friday's quarter-finals. Rusedski, 31, has been in good form recently but fell away after failing to take break points in the first and third games of the first set. "It was hot, and I think in the second set he was a little bit tired," said Karlovic. "I think that I am playing well here, and I am happy that I am in the quarter-finals." Meanwhile, Roddick recovered from a mid-match blip to record a 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 win over Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela. Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan had his hands full with South Africa's Wesley Moodie but eventually prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). Moodie hit 15 aces, but Srichaphan's speed around the court helped him to win.
