The more things change, the more they remain the same. Despite three different names since 1999, the Tennis Masters Series in Key Biscayne continues to be the same top-notch event. In its first year as the Nasdaq-100 Open, the tournament drew the top players, boasted beautiful weather once again, and provided tennis fans one of the best venues to watch their favorite players. Andre Agassi defeated a first time Tennis Masters Series finalist for the second year in a row. Last year, his victim was Jan-Michael Gambill, this season Roger Federer. And, the title stayed in the Williams family while Jennifer Capriati took the runner-up trophy. Last year, Venus handed Capriati the loss, but this year was Serena's turn. There were, however, two improvements over the tournament in past years. Security scrutinized every bag that entered the facility, and the women's restrooms outside the Grandstand were air-conditioned perfection decorated like a friend's home. Every woman who entered the restrooms gave them the thumbs up. As for the tennis, epic battles (think James Blake versus Fabrice Santoro), big upsets (think Eleni Daniilidou taking out crowd favorite Anna Kournikova in the first round) and boisterous crowds (think Brazil's Fernando Meligeni versus France's Nicolas Escude) offset the match retirements and the routs.

Search Tennis The Indoor Advantage Dateline: 11/17/98 As the 1998 tennis season comes to a close, both the WTA and ATP tours feature a fairly tight final stretch in the race for the prized year-end, number-one singles ranking. The pro tennis year is a marathon, testing each player's endurance in a series of outdoor environments: Australian hard courts, European and American clay, English grass, then American hard courts. At the finish line are the year-end rankings, but the sprint for the top rankings takes place indoors, and in this artificial world, the track slants uphill for some types of players, downhill for others. Indoor courts are fast. How fast depends basically on the roughness of the court surface, but any surface will play faster indoors than it will outdoors because the lack of wind indoors makes it easier to connect cleanly with the ball and thus hit it harder. Indoor courts also tend to be relatively smooth. A rough surface bites into the ball, slowing it down and pushing it upward so that it bounces higher. On a smooth surface, the ball skids forward with very little deceleration. As you watch the upcoming season finales, notice how predictably these court characteristics favor certain players.

Coach Larry Stefanki handles tennis' most irascible players with a sharp tongue and a dash of zen.
By Bruce Schoenfeld
Under a darkening desert sky near Palm Springs, Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Sochi, Russia, one of the world's best tennis players, raps two-armed backhands, one after another, to the rear of a practice court. The shots are placed with a precision more often associated with darts than tennis: a fist's length from the baseline, then closer, then directly on the line. From his side of the net, Larry Stefanki isn't nearly as precise. Stefanki, 44, is Kafelnikov's coach and a former competitive player, but on this night he might as well be a concrete wall. Average-sized, with blond hair headed for gray spilling out from under a baseball cap, he slaps each return with enough pace to get it to Kafelnikov's backhand, but no more. "Nice," he'll say on occasion, or "Location!" or "Good depth," but nothing pithier than that. When all three balls are beyond easy reach, Kafelnikov and Stefanki retrieve them, then convene at the net for a few moments to resume a conversation they're having about golf. But though the coaching may be nebulous, its effects aren't. Kafelnikov, ranked 11th in the world when he started working with Stefanki following the 1998 season, won an Australian Open and an Olympic gold medal before parting ways with Stefanki after the Italian Open in May. He spent six weeks at No. 1 in 1999 and earned a career-best $3.7 million last year. An aging John McEnroe, ranked 28th and falling when he hired Stefanki at the end of the '91 season, played deep into the Australian Open the following January, then surged to one last Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon. Under Stefanki, too, the undermotivated Marcelo Rios climbed from the sport's nether reaches to No. 1. Somehow, Stefanki makes world-class tennis players even better. And in the lucrative world of today's pro tour, that makes him very valuable, indeed.

Rios becoming a 'gambling man' MELBOURNE, Australia - Not even the $412,000 winner's check Marcelo Rios could pocket at the Australian Open Sunday might cover his losses at blackjack the past two weeks. Rios' game is tennis, and if he sticks to it he can be rich and successful, perhaps one of the sport's best players. Trouble is, blackjack is not the only way Rios has undermined himself. The pony-tailed, 22-year-old Chilean, who plays 30-year-old Czech Petr Korda for the year's first Grand Slam title, has a well-earned reputation for surliness off the court, and gutlessness on court. In tennis terms, Rios was long considered a "tanker," a guy who would give up a match when he was down, rather than fight back. His slogan could have been, "No mas!" He always had tremendous talent, even as a junior, but he played for years with a small heart. "The last two years, I'm not being like that," Rios said Friday after his 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 victory over unseeded Nicolas Escude in the semifinals. "Even if I'm losing badly, I try to fight to win a match. Before, I was a little lazy. If I'm losing, I say, OK, I concede. I didn't fight and I lose matches easy, one and love, and it looks like I didn't even care." Rios, the first Chilean to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era and the first since Luis Ayala played for the French title in 1960, said he often didn't care if he lost a match. And other players got on him for it.

home tickets news players ... results The dream of an international tennis tournament in Miami began three decades ago, when top tennis players such as Jack Kramer, Frank Sedgman, Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura and Butch Buchholz toured the country in a station wagon, playing tennis in darkened arenas and fairgrounds. It was before the days of Open tennis, and they traveled with a portable canvas court and plenty of hopes. Buchholz - an original member of the "Handsome Eight" (the first recognized pros of Lamar Hunt's World Championship Tennis Circuit introduced in 1968) - competed until he was forced to retire from tennis in 1970 with chronic tennis elbow. In 1980, when Buchholz was executive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) - the player's union - he met a vice president of the Thomas J. Lipton Company who liked his idea of creating a two-week players tournament. A sponsorship agreement would eventually be reached for $1.5 million a year for five years and Lipton would own the title. The "Winter Wimbledon," as it was first dubbed, would be the first major tournament of the year (the Australian Open was then held in December). It was decided that the first tournament would be held at Laver's International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach, 50 miles north of Miami. The following year, the tournament relocated to Boca Raton followed by a move to its permanent home in Miami in 1987. Buchholz approached the ATP and Women's Tennis Association and offered prize money, a percentage of the ticket sales and worldwide television rights. In return he wanted the rights to run the tournament for 15 years. The associations agreed.

GETTING THERE:
So you are coming to Palm Beach to enjoy the weather, relax and play some golf and tennis....but once here, there are a few special attractions that you should put on your "must see" list. The Lipton Tennis Championships held in March on Key Biscayne could head that list. Just an easy drive south on I-95 and you are there. The drive to the area is just beautiful. Once on Key Biscayne you drive down a wide road with beautiful landscaping in the center divider and the waters of Biscayne Bay surrounding you. For The Lipton there is ample, ample parking. This is a delight as there are many other venues where the biggest hassle is finding a parking space!
TENNIS ANYONE?:
You like to watch good tennis? ... How much tennis? Would you believe over 50 matches at The Lipton throughout the day the first few days? It was terrific. We ran from court to court trying to catch everything ... which, of course, was impossible ... but we did try. There are ten
One of the shops on the grounds was selling a huge, oversized tennis ball ... which turned out to be the favorite of the kids to collect autographs. Of course they had to carry these around with them all day, and they are not the easiest things to carry. Smart parents found large plastic bags with a handle to make that a little easier for them ... the parents, that is ... It seems to be the parents who end up carrying the balls. Why should a tennis match be different from other family adventures?
