Patrick Rafter, rookie Hewitt shine in tournament spotlight

TENNIS: Patrick Rafter, rookie Hewitt shine in tournament spotlight By Moin Salahuddin Daily Bruin Staff As expected, Americans Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi reached the finals of the 1999 Mercedes-Benz Cup Tournament on Sunday. But the country making the most noise in the tennis world these days may be Australia. Yes, Australia. No longer will it be referred to as simply a country of kangaroos, dingoes, or toilets that mysteriously flush the opposite way of our own. From the continued dominance of Patrick Rafter to the emergence of newcomer Lleyton Hewitt, the Aussies are showing the world that they come from a country to be reckoned with. "The Aussie surge is simply fantastic," said semifinalist James Sekulov. "The Davis Cup win over the U.S. was very inspiring." Less than one month ago, the Australians ventured out to Boston to face the favored American squad. But Rafter and Hewitt squashed the hopes of the U.S. to advance past the quarterfinals, as Australians routed the Americans, 4-1. "Australia has returned to the forefront of tennis," Hewitt said.

Raising the Rafters
Hi I'm John Newcombe. A couple of weeks ago I presented Pat Rafter with an identical trophy to this one over here proclaiming him as the number one tennis player in the world. But as the seventh child of nine Pat certainly didn't get to the top alone. Believing in him from the beginning were his parents and the entire Rafter clan. A huge and formidable support network.
But he's the first Australian to make a US Open semi-final.
John Newcombe
As you take this journey climbing to the mountaintop of tennis it's very very important that you have some rocks around you to hold on to. Through this whole sea of turmoil the family structure was always there. That was constant, that remained constant and that I think helped Pat through a pretty rocky period.
Theresa Rafter
He had so many people telling him all the time that he wouldn't be any good. It was really only Dad that kept saying "you'll be in the top fifty or the top ten" like Pat will do it and we all thought, 'yep Pat will do it, how dare people say that he won't do it'.
Maree Rafter
It was a group concept a group goal from the family because we knew Patrick had the ability to be number one, we knew he had the ability to win a grand slam.

Search Tennis Anna Crushes; Pat and Monica Return Dateline: 03/02/00 I saw a news story on ZDTV recently that mentioned that Anna Kournikova has more Web sites devoted to her than any other athlete in the world. If this is true, there's a good chance that a certain hockey star named Pavel Bure may soon have more males envying him than any other athlete in the world. Rumor has it that he and Anna are engaged. Anna is refusing to say anything for now, perhaps not wanting to dash millions of hopes with more suddenness than can be endured. Without even taking a scientific survey, I am prepared to declare that the consensus opinion deems Anna too young to be getting married! She is after all, only eighteen. And who knows how this would affect her play? She's off to a good start in 2000, making the semis at the Sydney International and the Open Gaz de France. Follow Steffi's lead, Anna. Get married after you retire. Or, if you won't follow Steffi, follow Jesse (Jackson that is) and "Keep hope alive!"

This month GIRL.com.au puts the SPORTS spotlight on one of Australia's hottest tennis players - PAT RAFTER.
PAT RAFTER
discovered his love of tennis at the tender age of five when he began playing tennis with his father and three older brothers. After many years playing in amateur tennis associations, he then turned his attention to the professional tennis circuit in 1991.
Since then, Pat has gone on to successfully emerge as one of the most popular tennis players in the world and arguably one of Australia's hottest tennis players. His innate ability and high skills were recognised in 1993 when Pat was awarded the title of ATP Tour Newcomer of the Year.

Australia hosts France in the 2001 Davis Cup final, a re-match from 1999. Then, Australia hoisted the trophy on clay in France. Now, the tie shifts to Aussie soil, grass to be exact. The Australians added a grass court to their Melbourne facility under the assumption that the French team plays too well on Rebound Ace, the normal surface in Melbourne, and two-time Wimbledon finalist Patrick Rafter is money on the green stuff. This shrewd move does not guarantee victory for the home team, especially since Rafter may not be 100%. This year's Davis Cup final has a little bit of everything: the new No. 1 player in the world, Lleyton Hewitt; the beloved Rafter in his career's twilight and an upstart, Sebastien Grosjean, who has been nearly unstoppable in the last month. RowZTennis.com profiles the eight men who have been chosen to represent Australia and France in the final tie. On paper, Australia has the edge, but in Davis Cup, the matches, not paper, matter most. Expect fireworks, fabulous tennis and a surprise ending when these two nations meet for the 2001 Davis Cup.
Wayne Arthurs

Like fine wine, Wayne Arthurs has improved with age. In 1998 Arthurs, who was ranked outside the top 100, played his first Grand Slam tournament. Now inside the top 85 in the world, Arthurs has proved his mettle on grass, posting impressive finishes at Newport and Wimbledon. His explosive serve is nearly unreturnable on fast surfaces. A solid singles player, Arthurs will most likely pair with Todd Woodbridge in doubles. Arthurs volleys well, and will try to serve his opponents off the court.

NEWPORT'S DEFENDING CHAMPION PETER WESSELS UPSETS PATRICK RAFTER
Wessels Defeats Rafter on Grass in 's- Hertogenbosch
NEWPORT, R.I. - Peter Wessels, who is returning to Newport to defend his singles title, upset the No. 2 seed Patrick Rafter today on the grass in 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. Rafter, a two-time US Open singles champion and last year's Wimbledon singles finalist, was the tournament's 3-time defending champion. Wessels beat Rafter in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
This victory follows Wessels' performance last week in Queens, where he upset the No. 1 seed Marat Safin to reach the quarterfinal. Earlier this year, Wessels advanced to the semifinal in Del Ray Beach and the quarterfinal in Chennai.
Wessels will attempt to become the first player since Bryan Shelton (1991-1992) to successfully defend his singles title at the Miller Lite Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, July 9-15. Played on the historic grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, this is the only ATP event played on grass in North America.

28-year-old Patrick Rafter, seemingly at the top of his tennis game and runner-up at Wimbledon this year, may retire after the 2001 tour.
Buzzle Staff Editor, 8/29/2001 9:44:00 AM Pat Rafter, who recently sheared his long locks in favor of a close-cropped look that has exposed a small gray spot, is playing with gusto and is a favorite to win at any fast-surface tournament. Rafter, however, has announced that he will take a 6-month hiatus from the game after the 2001 tournament season and that the break may lead to permanent retirement.
When asked what it is that he loves about tennis of late, Rafter replied simply, "That it’s nearly finished." Not the expected response from one of the favorites to win the U.S. Open, a tournament that Pat won successively in 1997 and 1998. On Monday, the first day of 2001 U.S. Open action, Rafter defeated the young Bob Bryan 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-5. Bryan, a rising star whose brother was defeated by Andre Agassi in the tournament’s first round, noted of Rafter, "He’s playing great. He can go for a good five more years."
That Rafter will continue for another 5 years is unlikely, given his recent desire to step away for a break. "I don’t want to be around tennis for a while and see how much I miss it, if I do or not," Rafter noted.
