Boris Becker. I watched him when he was 17 and won Wimbledon. Just the way he played, he was powerful, when he hit the ball it was a big shot from the baseline plus his serve and volley. 4th round Philippoussis approaches his home Grand Slam full of confidence following his return to form and fitness in 2003. Last year's Wimbledon saw the Australian complete a remarkable comeback after more than two years of injury problems that almost ended his career. With his huge serve working again, Philippoussis made it to the final at Wimbledon before running into a man inspired in Roger Federer. He went on to collect his 10th career title in Shanghai and was unlucky to miss out on the end-of-season Masters Cup. However, his form did see him overtake Lleyton Hewitt as Australian number one and it was his brave five-set win over Juan Carlos Ferrero that sealed the Aussies' Davis Cup win against Spain in November. The main question mark over Philippoussis remains his health - and he was forced to battle against a muscle tear in his chest against Ferrero.

N/A Philippoussis approaches the French Open hoping for a confidence boost ahead of the grass-court season. The Australian, who made an astonishing comeback from a career-threatening back injury last year, went four months without winning a match after reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open in January. He received criticism in his home country, notably from Pat Cash, for the manner of that straight sets defeat to Hicham Arazi and went on to lose both his singles matches as the Aussies' defence of their Davis Cup crown ended in the first round against Sweden. It was a sharp reverse of fortunes for Philippoussis after his brave five-set win over Juan Carlos Ferrero sealed the Davis Cup win against Spain last November.

Leg Cramps Force Philippoussis to Retire During Fifth Set by Joe Checkler
Wednesday, September 1, 2004
If Australian Mark Philippoussis could have just pulled out a fourth-set tiebreak during his first-round match against Nikolay Davydenko on Wednesday, he could have waited a few days to rest the cramping legs that forced him to take an injury timeout a few games earlier. But after battling back with three consecutive points to knot the tiebreak up at 4-4, Philippoussis surrendered three of the next four points, and Davydenko had forced a fifth and deciding set. With barely any range of motion left to devote to the already three-plus-hour-long match, Philippoussis quickly fell behind 4-1 in the fifth, and was forced to retire. The final score wound up at 1-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-1, ret. Philippoussis' serve was only broken during the second set, and after that, it became clear that the only way Davydenko would win the fourth would be in a tiebreak. Philippoussis failed to convert on the only break-point chance for either player during that fourth set, in a game that would have seen him go up 5-4 and have a chance to serve for the match. After Davydenko brushed it off to force deuce, the players steamrolled to the tiebreak. After being broken in the second game of the second set, the monitor above Louis Armstrong Stadium reported Philippoussis' first-serve percentage at 28 percent. He was broken again during the set, which was easily won by Davydenko. Then came the third set, a showcase of 33 Philippoussis first serves, 21 of which landed in the service box and seven of which were not even struck by Davydenko's racket. It took just one break by Philippoussis to wrestle control of the match. Philippoussis outaced Davydenko, 17-6, but made 67 unforced errors to Davydenko's 34.
