Sportscene » Full Story Spice Boys of tennis will need to recreate magic It’s one memory that refuses to fade. At the Millennium Games, Leander Paes, sitting alongside his Olympian father Vece, watched speechless as a dark, lonely figure sank to the ground, face buried in his hands. On the sidelines, photographers jostled for the better angle. When the 32-year-old was eventually led off the field, he did little to control his tears. Long after the last spectator had left the Olympic hockey venue, Paes hadn’t stirred from his seat. Then after what seemed like an eternity he looked long and hard at his father. Neither man was ever going to forget the trauma and tragedy of the moment.

June 7 to 13, 2004 at Gerry Weber Stadium, Halle/Westfalen, Germany more pictures are available at www.chrispd.tk Report by IndianFootball.Com Editor-in-Chief Chris Punnakkattu Daniel: Indian football meets Indian tennis The Gerry Weber Open 2004 tennis tournament (June 7 to 13, 2004) in the German city of Halle/ Westfalen made the scene for a meeting far away from home: Indian football meets Indian tennis! I was not only able to witness Indian tennis star Leander Paes clinching the doubles title alongside with his Czech partner David Rikl, but also meet the star twice. Paes is well known for his great interest in football and skills on the football field. Furthermore he is a supporter of East Bengal Club. The Gerry Weber Open 2004 proved to be a very competitive tennis tournament and Paes/Rikl showed their class while winning the title easily. The Indian showed a rising form, while the Athens Olympic Games are approaching fast. The Indo-Czech duo impressed the German spectators incl. a one-man Indian fan club (myself, somewhere in the upper deck of the Gerry Weber stadium) as they easily rushed into the final beating Lopez/Sargsian 6:2, 7:6 on Saturday.

zurück back TENNIS by Chris Punnakkattu Daniel Gerry Weber Open 2005: Paes and Bhupathi bringing Indian flair to Halle Once again the small city of Halle/Westf. is preparing to host Germany's only lawn tennis tournament, which will take place at the Gerry Weber Stadium from June 4 to 12. Indian tennis stars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have entered the main draw of the doubles competition. Leander Paes (29) is coming back to Halle with good memories. Last years tournament proved to be a very competitive tennis tournament as Paes and his Czech partner David Rikl showed their class while winning the title easily. The duo impressed the German spectators as they easily rushed into the final, where they beat Tomas Cibulec/Petr Pala 6:2, 7:5. Mahesh Bhupathi (30) will be the second Indian entry to the tournament. Bhupathi has already won 37 ATP tournaments and claimed the Grand Slam titles at Paris, Wimbledon and at the US Open. Bhupathi made it to the final of the Gerry Weber Open 2000 to finish second with German player David Prinosil. The tournament organisers are speculating, that Paes and Bhupathi might start as a team at Halle. This would be a big sensation, as the duo known as the "Indian Express" opted to choose new partners after having some problems several years ago. Paes/Bhupathi kept their partnership only alive when they turned-up to represent India in the Davis Cup.

Leander and Bhupathi have done us proud by finishing as the No. 2 pair in the world last year and still we are not satisfied. For that matter even they are not! So the good news is that they will be going all-out for the No. 1 spot as well as hunt around for a grand slam title or two in 1999. Something tells me they are going to do it this year, now that the Jacco Eltingh and Paul Harrhuis partnership forced to part company. It is also heartening to note that Mahesh and Leander have finally a win over the pearless woodies under their belt.
The Asia cup triumph and the good show at the Asian Games without the Leander histrionics shows that the second string has finally broken through. Syed Fazaluddin has shown promise and of course Prahlad Srinath is competing with the best that the Asian challenge has to offer. Syed Fazaluddin has been performing creditably in gaining some useful ATP points and will be a player to watch in the near future.
The juniors too are progressing nicely. Especially Vijay Kannan who seems to be headed for bigger things in a couple of years if he continues to improve at the same rate as he has been doing now. The Kirtanes of Pune have shown signs of becoming the next hot doubles team in India as they swept titles at will on the satellite circuit in India in the latter part of 1998. But they have some way to go before they can think of matching the deeds of the premier doubles pair in India. They have to work hard to maintain their postion in the Indian team as the youngsters are threatening to take over the fourth and fifth spots. Overall our second string looks good and we can hope for a good future in tennis.

Andy Roddick of the United States exults after winning a point. Roddick beat Leander Paes in four sets. Outside the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem (North Carolina) on that Sunday evening, sipping Brazilian coffee from a huge paper cup, the old man grinned and offered his hand. "Great show," he said. "That Paes is a lovely player. This has been a great weekend here. After all that's happened in this country..." his breaking voice trailed off. Then, moments later, the old man said, "You know, my wife said the other day that it's ridiculous to go and watch a sports event when the country has been traumatised. But I think sport is the answer. I wish George Bush and Osama bin Laden sorted out their differences on a tennis court." Ah, what a dream! If only that could happen!
