Tennis Hall Welcomes Courier, Noah And Novotna
POSTED: 2:11 pm CDT July 9, 2005 Email This Story Print This Story Newport, RI The International Tennis Hall of Fame enshrined four new members on Saturday, including former world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier. Joining Courier in the Hall were fellow major champions Yannick Noah and Jana Novotna, as well as tour administrator Butch Buchholz. The athletic Courier claimed back-to-back French Opens in 1991-92 and back-to- back Australian Opens in 1992-93. He also spent a total of 58 weeks at No. 1 and played on American Davis Cup championship teams in 1992 and '95. Courier, in his trademark white cap, pounded the ball from the baseline in his heyday and joined Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Michael Chang for the Americans' dominating decade of the 1990s. Courier was the first one of the group to win two majors and the first one to reach the top of the men's rankings. A now 34-year-old Courier retired from the ATP in 2000 after compiling 23 singles titles and six doubles championships.

Former World No. 1 Jim Courier will join former Newport champion Tom Gullikson and past WTA stars Jana Novotna and Carling Bassett-Seguso in the ATP Foundation Cup event at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The special fund-raising doubles exhibition will be played on Sunday, July 10 in conjunction with the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships and the Class of 2005 Induction Weekend. The exhibition will be held at 10:00am on Bill Talbert Center Court. History
James Van Alen established the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1953 as a private enterprise in the Newport, Rhode Island, Casino, which hosted the U. S. national championship from its inception in 1881 through 1915. It was sanctioned as the sport's official by the U. S. Tennis Association in 1954 and it became the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976. Originally housed in a single room, the hall of fame gradually expanded through the years to take over the entire building. A $6 million renovated project to upgrade the exhibits was completed in 1997. The hall of fame, which is open year-around, includes audiovisual and interactive exhibits, one of the world's few remaining court tennis courts, a theater, and a 2,500-volume library on all racquet sports. To qualify for induction, a player can still be active, but must be five years removed from being a "significant factor" in competitive tennis. Members are elected by representatives of the international tennis media. Top of page

South Florida Sun-Sentinel Tennis Lessons From A Pro: Gigi Fernandez By Charles Bricker February 22, 2003
    South Florida Sun-Sentinel
There was a mischievous smile on Gigi Fernandez's face as she recalled the first time she sailed a racket in anger. "Three years old," she announced. "I was hitting against the wall, and I couldn't beat it." By the time she had won her 17th, and final, Grand Slam doubles title, with a particularly satisfying semifinal win over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Martina Hingis at the 1997 French Open, only the tennis gods could total up the number of rackets Fernandez had flipped and flung on the women's tennis tour. Today, five years into retirement and hardly slowing down, coach Fernandez brings her South Florida women's team to the University of Miami (1 p.m.), where she'll be writing out a lineup card instead of a check to cover her latest round of fines. "I've got to be a role model now," she says. This is not going to be a wildly successful rookie year for Fernandez, whose 2-4 team butts up against the 4-2 Hurricanes and 2-5 Florida International on Sunday at 11 a.m. But her persistent smile says she's having a good time in this second tennis life, and there is a confidence there that things will improve after a couple of good recruiting years.
