Martina Navratilova is hating on Maria Sharapova : Of course, Martina also picked Justine Henin-Hardenne ( One and Done ) as the favorite to win.
posted by graymatters to Tennis at 12:30 PM CST (14 comments total) We're sure 'hating' isn't a typo, right?
posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 1:30 PM CST on June 22 Hey there Weedy, easy, tiger.
I have two thoughts reading this story.
One, from anyone else these thoughts could be easily dismissed, but Martina has earned the right to speak her occasionally unpopular (and more often than not still accurate) thoughts on tennis any time she wants. She's quite possibly the greatest women's tennis player ever, and she's seen more prospects and can't-misses come and go than you'll ever see in your lifetime.
So what if she was wrong this week? I respect her right to an opinion.
Two, I have a hunch. Martina may have said this stuff in print to light a fire under Sharapova. Maria has a serious competitive streak (more than most pros, even), and if Martina Navratilova hates on her in print, maybe that'll push her a little more to improve.
I could see Martina Navratilova doing that, easily.

Martina Navratilova has been described as the greatest female athlete of this century. She is certainly one of the greatest athletes, female or male, of our time. And in November, she said farewell to singles play. As a player, Navratilova was bold and smart, and she dared to do things that others before and since could only imagine. She single-handedly reinvented women's tennis, taking the boundaries and limitations of women's tennis and shoving them higher and wider. As she entered New York's Madison Square Garden for the last match, more than 17,000 fans gave her a two-minute standing ovation while nearly 100 photographers captured the moment. Gabriela Sabatini won that final match, but Navratilova won a place in sports history. During her 21 years, Navratilova won 1,650 matches, 19 Grand Slam titles and 167 singles titles overall. As sports writer Tom Weir in a commentary for The Washington Post said, "Her 74-match winning streak ought to rank right alongside Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. In 1982, her singles and doubles record was a combined 160- 7. Add up the regular-season victory totals of that year's champions from the World Series, Super Bowl and NBA Finals and they barely beat Navratilova, 162-160." During a special taped tribute to Navratilova at Madison Square Garden, friend and long-time tennis rival Chris Evert said, "She revolutionized the game. She brought a fresh new honesty. She's never been afraid to speak out or say what she really thinks. And she always wore her heart on her sleeve." Whether laughing or crying, falling to her knees in disappointment or joy, running, swinging or lunging for that impossible passing shot she (as if by magic) managed to return, Navratilova always gave the game her best.

Magnificent Martina marches on By Nirmal Shekar On a typical Wimbledon opening day which captured the timeless rhythm of the championships, now in its 118th staging, as a shy summer sun popped in and out of dark, threatening clouds which opened up now and again, Navratilova became the oldest woman in the Open Era (post-1968) to win a Grand Slam singles match. The nine-time champion, who requested and received a wild card to play in the singles event, outclassed Catalina Castano, a 24-year old Colombian playing only her fifth career grass court match, 6-0, 6-1 in 46 minutes in the first round. Leading 5-0 in the first set, Navratilova spent more in the locker room waiting for play to resume than she did on the court in recording her first Wimbledon singles victory in 10 years. Her last match here was a surprising defeat in the final against Conchita Martinez of Spain in 1994. If Castano was picking her way through the minefield of age-group tennis at that time, then the Colombian was not even born when Navratilova won the second of her nine singles titles here in 1979. "It is not about age. It never should be. You have got to enjoy what you are doing,'' said Navratilova, who also features in the women's doubles and in the mixed doubles with Leander Paes.

She shares that honour with Billie Jean King, having already beaten many of her other landmarks, not least by playing a record 279 singles matches at SW19. Her haul of nine singles titles at Wimbledon is also still to be surpassed, as is her achievement of winning six in a row between 1982 and 1987. In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, Navratilova raised the women's game to a new level with power and aggression. The Czech-born left-hander, who became a naturalised American in 1975, also set new standards with her astonishing fitness levels and commitment.

Martina Navratilova after her victory with Leander Paes Photos from her career Martina Navratilova comfortably won a record-equalling 20th Wimbledon title by claiming the mixed doubles title on Sunday. The 46-year-old joins American Billie Jean King as the only two players to win 20 titles at the All England Club. Navratilova joined forces with India's Leander Paes to breeze past Israeli Andy Ram and Russian Anastassia Rodionova 6-3 6-3. "All my titles here are special but the last one was eight years ago and I never thought I'd play again after that," said Navratilova. "It's been a great ride and this is very, very special." Paes, who joined forces with Navratilova at last year's US Open, also paid tribute to his partner.

Martina Navratilova is unquestionably one of the greatest sportswomen in history, and has a strong claim to the title of greatest female tennis player of all time. She is also an individual of great courage, who has had to overcome prejudice and repression from political forces of the left and right in order to express herself freely and achieve sporting greatness. The Young Prodigy Born Martina Subertova on 18 October, 1956, in Prague , Czechoslovakia , her first home was a ski lodge in the Krkonose Mountains, where her father, Miroslav Subert, was a ski instructor. Her parents split up when she was still a small child, and she and her mother moved to Revnice in the countryside of Bohemia. Tennis ran in her family; Martina's grandmother Agnes Semanska had been an international tennis star. So Martina took up the sport when very young, entering her first tournament at the age of eight. Her first coach was her stepfather Mirek Navratil, who married her mother in 1962 - after which Martina adopted his surname, adding the feminine suffix 'ova'.

And she entered a fourth decade at the 2003 Championships when she become the oldest ever Grand Slam champion at 46 years 261 days after winning the Mixed Doubles title with Leander Paes. Earlier in the year she become the first player in Open era to win every Slam event available when she won the 2003 Australian Open Mixed Doubles title also with Leander Paes (ie. Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles in all four Grand Slam events). In total she has won 58 Grand Slam titles in all. Navratilova's victory at the 2003 Championships alongside Paes also meant that she equalled Billie Jean King's record number of 20 Wimbledon titles. Navratilova has had to come through personal trauma. The Czech defected from her native land to settle in the United States as a sensitive teenager, a little heartbroken, a little lonely. A junk food diet and the effect it had on her body reflected her inner turmoil. Later, she came under pressure concerning her sexuality.
