And she entered a fourth decade at the 2003 Championships when she become the oldest ever Grand Slam champion at 46 years 261 days after winning the Mixed Doubles title with Leander Paes. Earlier in the year she become the first player in Open era to win every Slam event available when she won the 2003 Australian Open Mixed Doubles title also with Leander Paes (ie. Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles in all four Grand Slam events). In total she has won 58 Grand Slam titles in all. Navratilova's victory at the 2003 Championships alongside Paes also meant that she equalled Billie Jean King's record number of 20 Wimbledon titles. Navratilova has had to come through personal trauma. The Czech defected from her native land to settle in the United States as a sensitive teenager, a little heartbroken, a little lonely. A junk food diet and the effect it had on her body reflected her inner turmoil. Later, she came under pressure concerning her sexuality. But she has been able to hold the negatives at bay and combined her pragmatic side with her passion as a player. Her fitness regimes alone revolutionised women's tennis as she developed a powerful attacking game, full of variety and just about perfect for Wimbledon. It was certainly enough to overtake American rival Chris Evert.

When she retired from singles in 1994 she had won 167 singles titles including a record nine at Wimbledon. Her victory in the 1995 Wimbledon mixed doubles extended her total of Wimbledon titles to 19, one short of Billie Jean King's record. In 1978 she began a relationship with Rita Mae Brown (1944 - ), an American activist and writer, but the publicity made her resign as head of the Women's Tennis Association. She later had an affair with Judy Nelson and gained admiration by routinely climbing into the crowd at tennis matches to snog her lover after winning games. She stepped up her campaigning for lesbian and gay rights and spoke at the march on Washington DC in April 1993. She also filed a law suit against the enactment of the homophobic Amendment 2 in Colorado which bans legal protection for lesbians and gays in the fields of housing and employment. In 1994 she announced her retirement from singles tennis.

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA Tennis Player The dominant women's tennis player of her time, Martina Navratilova won every grand slam singles title at least twice: Wimbledon (a record nine times), the Australian Open (three), the French Open (two) and the U.S. Open (four). Left-handed, sinewy and athletic, she helped bring a new era of power into the traditionally more finesse-minded women's game. Her many matches with former world #1 Chris Evert were particularly famous. Navratilova retired from professional tennis in 1994, but in 2000 returned to occasional action in mixed doubles. By winning the mixed doubles title at the 2003 Australian Open (with Leander Paes of India) she became the first player since Margaret Court to win the singles, doubles and mixed doubles at all four grand slam tournaments.
Extra credit : Navratilova and Paes won mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2003, giving her a total of 20 Wimbledon titles... The same win gave her 58 total career grand slam titles, second only to Court's 62... At age 46 years and eight months, Navratilova also became the oldest player of either sex ever to win a grand slam title... Navratilova won 167 singles titles during her professional career.

Martina Navratilova passes 40, finds “’till death do us part” love, and makes a million bucks for dyke charities.
Sports fans know Martina Navratilova for her 25 years of grinding tennis play. She holds the women’s all-time record for singles championships. In the mid-1980s, she was the top ranking female tennis player for all but a few weeks. She dominated Wimbledon, winning six consecutive singles titles, four U.S. Open singles championships, and scores of doubles titles. In 1992, Navratilova won her 158th professional tennis title at the Virginia Slims and set a record for career singles championships. The next year, she toppled Monica Seles in the Paris Open and established yet another record, becoming the oldest person to beat a No. 1 player in professional tennis.
Now, almost a decade later, Navratilova’s championship numbers have continued to rise on the courts — even in her semiretirement — but times have changed and people are flocking more often to see upstarts like Venus Williams rule the court. Navratilova’s fan base, however, has continued to grow — broadened from the sports aficionados to a whole new generation of young women, progressive men, and queer activists who are energized by her pro-female advertising, dyke visibility, and earnest fund-raising for gay and lesbian causes.
Spread across America are also the newest fans — the little old ladies who know her only as “the woman from the Subaru commercial.” That’s OK with the muscle-bound, Czech-born legend. She too has changed. Gone are the heady days and turbulent relationships that made tabloid headlines (Judy Nelson, Rita Mae Brown). She’s just an average over-40 lesbian with a lifetime companion and a couple of dogs who keep her on her toes. (“The dog is not quite capable of listening to commands,” she groans, stopping the interview to scold.) Nowadays, she’s as likely to talk about Golda Meir (the Russian-born former prime minister of Israel) or Shannen Doherty’s role on “Charmed” as she is to discuss the intricacies of the U.S. Open. (Just don’t get her started on “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”)
