BIOGRAPHY
As the game's most prolific winner of the open eraprobably everMartina Navratilova, the puissant left-hander, continues to add to her record totals. Yet dabbling in doublesshe won the Wimbledon mixed in 1995 with Jonathan StarkMarvelous Martina retired from singles at the 1994 year-end WTA Championships at Madison Square Garden in an opening-round defeat by Gabriela Sabatini, 6-4, 6-2. Thousands cheered and wept saying goodbye and thanks for the memories. She had done so much in New York, winning that prime championship eight times in singles (five times runner-up), 10 times in doubles, plus four singles and 11 doubles titles across the East River at the U.S. Open.
Nobody, ever, has had such a glittering trove of numbers. As a pro since 1973, she played the most singles tournaments (380) and matches (1,650), and won the most titles (167) and matches (1,438) with a won-lost mark of 1,438-212. She won more prize money, $20,344,061, than all but Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Martina Navratilova won 56 Grand Slam championships, second only to Margaret Court. It wasn't easy for Martina Navratilova, born a Czechoslovakian but with the heart of an American. It was hard shaping up and winning a record nine Wimbledons, including six consecutively on the hallowed grass. It was even more difficult winning over the fans. Her public perception advanced from animosity to acceptance to adulation. "How gratifying it must have been for her," Frank Deford wrote. "To have achieved so much, triumphed so magnificently, yet always to have been the other, the odd one, alone: lefthander in a righthanded universe, gay in a straight world; defector, immigrant; the (last?) gallant volleyer among all those duplicate baseline bytes. http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico/womenenc/navratilova.htm
Martina Navratilova Can you imagine having to ask permission to leave your own country? When Martina Navratilova was young she couldn't leave Czechoslovakia without asking the government for permission. Martina started playing tennis when she was very young. She used to borrow her grandmother's old tennis racket and hit tennis balls against a wall. She took her first lesson when she was only six years old. Her first teacher was her stepfather, Mirek. She played in her first tournament when she was eight years. She joined the Czech National team and got to travel and see countries where people were free. It made her unhappy to live where she was not free. In 1975, she decided to defect. (Defect means to run away from your country.) She was sad but she knew it was the right thing to do. In 1976, Martina lost her first match at the US Open. It really shook her up. She had been eating too many hamburgers and too much pizza. She really wasn't working very hard either. She decided that she needed to work as hard as she could and get better. By 1978 Martina was back on top, winning tournaments and she was ranked the #1 woman tennis player in the world. In 1981 Martina became a United States citizen. She won the Grand Slam of tennis in 1984. In order to win the Grand Slam you have to win Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open all in the same year. In 1984 Marina was made a member of the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame. The Associated Press and United Press International named her 1980s Female Athlete of the Decade. Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon nine times-a record. She retired in 1994 but she still plays team tennis and does exhibitions sometimes.

BERLIN - U.S. tennis great Martina Navratilova criticized her adopted homeland in a German newspaper on Wednesday, saying money is the only thing that matters there. Navratilova, a Czech-born American who won 18 grand slam singles titles when she dominated women's tennis in the late 1970s and 1980s, also wrote in an article for Die Zeit weekly that she believed free speech was being suppressed in the United States. "The most absurd part of my escape from the unjust system is that I have exchanged one system that suppresses free opinion for another," said Navratilova, 45, who fled Czechoslovakia at the age of 18 to go to the United States. The nine-time women's Wimbledon champion, who still plays in some doubles tournaments and last week played in a singles tournament at the Eastbourne International Championships in England, singled out President Bush's Republican Party for unusually harsh criticism. "The Republicans in the United States manipulate public opinion and sweep any controversial issues under the table," Navratilova said.
