Ukranian criticizes Wimbledon after loss in Paris
Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday June 05, 2000 04:39 PM Andrei Medvedev: "People treat you bad there. There is practically no motivation to play Wimbledon whatsoever." AP PARIS (AP) Andrei Medvedev did not rage about his rain-soaked defeat Monday at the French Open. He saved his ire for Wimbledon, saying he's frustrated by the way players are treated there. Medvedev, among the wittiest and most candid players on the men's tour, said he's not looking forward to the next Grand Slam beginning June 26. "They make exceptions for some players, and for the rest they treat them like dirt," said Medvedev, whose best performance at Wimbledon was reaching the fourth round in 1994. "My opinion is that they only care about players who play on Court 1, Center Court, maybe Court 2. That's simply unacceptable," he said.

Search Tennis Olympic Tennis: Not Worth The Trouble? Updated 09/18/00 The top tennis pros are split on whether the Olympics is worth playing. Gustavo Kuerten, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, and the Williams sisters look forward to it enthusiastically, but opting to skip this Olympics are many of tennis's other big stars, including Pete Sampras, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Mary Pierce, and rising star Jan-Michael Gambill. Defending gold medalist Andre Agassi had been eager to play, but has withdrawn due to concurrent illness of his sister and mother. Other players withdrawing late, many of them citing injuries, include Nicolas Lapentti, Andrei Medvedev, Marc Rosset, Sebastien Grosjean, Anke Huber, Patty Schnyder, Nathalie Tauziat, and Sandrine Testud. The big names who chose early to skip the Sydney Olympics say it's too close to the US Open and too far away from home. The tennis event runs Sept. 19-28, starting only nine days after the US Open, and Australia is a long enough trip that for most of Australian Open history, it was the only Grand Slam that would often be skipped by a significant number of top pros.

Rankings as of November 28, 1994) Uhhhhh.... Ummmmm.... Let me think a minute, I'm sure I can think of something to say! 8-) But seriously, folks, we're now officially in the tennis Off-Season (well, despite the Grand Slam Cup, but we all know that it doesn't really count anyway, right?), so the Top 100 is going to be a little, well, BORING for the next few weeks. But I bring it to you anyway. Besides, there actually was SOME movement on the list, thanks no doubt to a challenger event somewhere, so say hello to Mover of the Week Jan Siemerink, who picked up a staggering 20 points. At the same time, please shed a tear for Loser of the Week David Rikl, who lost a painful 69 points. After the Top 100 lists, you'll find a list of the winning percentages of all players who reached at least one ATP tour final in 1994. It's the least I can do for you; also, it's an example of the kind of information available at my new Web site, along with much, much more! That number again: http://access.digex.net/~jd/tennis.html Thanks to everyone who's written and/or visited so farthe site is changing daily, so make sure to come back often to see what's new! Rankings as of 11/21/1994) When you win 10 tournaments in a year, including two Grand Slams and the ATP Championships in Frankfurt, you're going to be the number one player in the world. So, ladies and gentlemen, a fine round of applause, please, for Pete Sampras, who despite a rough patch during the second half of the year still managed to outpace the #2 player in the world by a mere 1848 points. (So, think of it this way: even if that call on the baseline at 4-5 15-30(?) hadn't been overruled, and Andre had gone on to beat Pete and then to win the tournament, Pete would now be #1 in the world by a mere 1400-odd points. Whew! That was a close one 8-).) Boris Becker deservedly is the #2 Mover of the Week, while Agassi and Sergi Bruguera are also rewarded for their semifinalist finishes. Now, about the REST of this list. Quite simply, I'm as mystified by it as you are. (Uh ohthe truth is outI really don't know what's going on deep in the heart of the IBM/ATP computer.) It's easy to surmise that somewhere a challenger event was held this week (and, let me guess, Jim Grabb beat Jeremy Bates in the final?), but I find it hard to believe that guys such as Petr Korda were there and only picked up a point or two. I mean, look at how many people gained 5 points, or 3, or 1. So, my official guess is that either 1) all of these guys did play at a challenger event or 2) either last week's rankings or this week's rankings were/are incorrect. (Gulp.) NEWCOMERS: 100 Karim Alami FAREWELL TO: Oliver Gross MOVER OF THE YEAR CONTEST: At last, now comes the time to crown 1994's Mover of the Year, that player who has leapt farther than any of his competitors during the past 11 1/2 months. And can it really be any surprise that the winner is Andre Agassi; in January of 1994 Andre was #24 in the world, had his hand in a cast, and was beginning to look like a has-been. But now, he's the #2 guy, and, scarier still, does not have any points to defend until the week of February 20, 1995. (And, if you want to be REALLY specific about Andre's unbelievable performance in 1994, consider that on February 21 Andre was ranked at #32 and had only 959 points, making his total leap 2290 points since his first tournament of the year.) Let's also recognize the accomplishments of Yevgeny Kafelnikovin fact, let's remember the wisdom of Pete Sampras, who after beating Yevgeny in the 2nd Round at the Australian Open (6-3,2-6,6-3,1-6,9-7), predicted that his near-conqueror would be a Top 20 player by the end of the year. Then there's Alberto "Man of Clay" Berasategui, who, it must be said in all honesty, is probably going to want to encase 1994 in glass, because he may not see this sort of performance again. Then there's the boys at the bottom of the list; it is no doubt small consolation to them that they may not actually be the BIGGEST point-droppers of 1994; for now, this list only contains the Top 100 players. There may be one or two guys who lost more than 1400 points, but who are now so far down the computer as to be invisible. Because of this, I will refrain from giving Jim Courier any snide sort of trophy; the numbers, however, speak for themselves.... (My criteria on this list: anything greater than a 300-point gain or loss during the year.) THIS WEEK : The French Open of 1999 came close to 1997's bizarre set of players winning through to the second week. That year, only three of the quarter-finalists were in the ATP top 50! Let's have a look at the semi-finalists this year, noting that three of the favourites were beaten in the quarters: LAST WEEK THIS WEEK SRI SRI ATP SRI ATP Rank Clay Rank Rank Rank Dominik Hrbaty 30 20 31 22 18 Andre Agassi 2 (10) 14 2 4 Andrei Medvedev 86 120 99 37 30 Fernando Meligeni 33 22 55 27 26 After the loss to Ljubicic, he took four weeks off. How's that for a French Open preparation?! Apart from the week in Sweden where he made the final, Medvedev had gone 2-10 on clay. To turn that around was quite amazing. Medvedev has been ranked as high as 16th on the SRI Rankings computer back in March 1995, but this week he leaps back into the Top 50, up from 86 to 37 (ATP #99 -> #30). Another entry into the SRI Rankings Top 50 comes from Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who made the final of a Challenger event in the Czech Republic. He's currently ATP #113, but we expect bigger things.

Belgians Advance, Qualifiers Thrive at WTA Warsaw
The two former No. 1-ranked Belgians, No. 7-seeded Kim Clijsters (d. (LL) Perebiynis 6-1 in the third) and unseeded Justine Henin-Hardenne (d. (LL) Chladkova), led the favorites Tuesday on the clay at the WTA stop in Warsaw.
"My first match on clay is always tough and I definitely didn't feel comfortable out there today," Clijsters said after winning her 15th consecutive tour match. "It's tough out there on clay and I feel I have to try 10 times harder than I have to on hardcourts, or grass even. Pushing off is a lot tougher for me, and especially today because the court was a little softer."
Henin-Hardenne said her biggest adjustment is moving from the green clay of Charleston to the red clay in Warsaw.
