Search Tennis French Open Predictions Minus Venus and Amelie Dateline: 05/28/01 Second seed Venus Williams and fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo, both considered top contenders for the 2001 French Open, lost in the first round Monday. Of all the seeded players, Venus drew the toughest first-round opponent in Barbara Schett, ranked 24th in the world. Schett's 6-4, 6-4 win was her first over Venus in five tries. It was their first match on clay, though, and while Venus has had some good results on clay, it mutes her biggest weapon, power. Schett was able to get to all but a few of Venus's shots, and, perhaps going for too much, Venus committed 43 unforced errors. Amelie Mauresmo's draw was not as tough, but 60th-ranked Jana Kandarr was able to out-steady her for a 7-5, 7-5 upset. Although Mauresmo's four titles this year have evidenced, among other assets, a major improvement in her mental toughness, she had displayed remarkably poor shot selection in her recent loss to Jelena Dokic at the Italian Open. Her loss to Kandarr was similar. She blew a 5-1 lead in the second set and committed 37 unforced errors. The women's field is further narrowed by several prominent withdrawals due to injury. Out are the 3rd seed, Lindsay Davenport (knee), the defending champion, Mary Pierce (back), three-time champion Monica Seles (foot), and the always notable Anna Kournikova (foot). Davenport withdrew after the seedings, so the draw contains no 3rd seed, but instead a 17th seed, Sandrine Testud.

Amelie Mauresmo:
What's Love Got to Do with It?
By Jack Nichols
O nly a year has passed since French tennis pro Amelie Mauresmo came out of the closet at age 19. She'd just worsted leading champion Lindsay Davenport in a match at the Australian Open. Ms. Davenport had hardly been a good sport about it. After her loss she'd said of Amelie: "A couple of times I thought I was playing a guy, the girl was hitting it so hard. She's so strong in those shoulders. She hits the ball, you know, not like any other girl. She hits it so hard and with so much topspin. Women's tennis is not usually played like that. ... The shoulders looked huge. I think that they must have grown." Tennis star Amelie Mauresmo, seen here playing in a tournament in Rome, came out last year at age 19. Mauresmo was a finalist in last year's Australian Open. Later Ms. Davenport felt it necessary to clarify her remarks, insisting that she hadn't meant to cast aspersions on Amelie's sexual orientation. But Tina Turner's famed question "What's Love got to Do with It?" got one of its best answers in the person of Amelie. She credited her victory to the presence of a newfound love in her life, running to the arms of Sylvie Bourdon, and telling reporters: "Looking up at Sylvie during the match was that little extra support that I needed. It gave me strength. Finding Sylvie and having such a good personal life now has made the difference in my tennis. It had been the missing part of my life."

Mauresmo has devoted her life to tennis. When she was only eleven she was proficient enough to attract the attention of the French tennis federation, which offered financial support so that she could attend a tennis school in the south of France. Two years later she moved on to the training center in Paris used by France's Olympic athletes. Mauresmo frequently suffered from homesickness and said in retrospect that if she had it to do over, she would not leave home at such a young age. Throughout Mauresmo's teen years her tennis continued to improve. She won both the French and Wimbledon Junior championships in 1996. Injuries, particularly back problems, an ongoing plague of Mauresmo's career, kept her out of action for much of 1997, but she rebounded the following year, playing well and reaching the final of the German Open. Her consistent play earned her a number 34 ranking from the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and an invitation from Yannick Noah to join the French Federation Cup team. Although Mauresmo continued to play well and advanced to number 29 in the WTA rankings, she decided to sign on with a new coach, Isabelle Demongeot, who ran a training academy in St. Tropez.

Dominant on the junior circuit, Mauresmo found the transition to the COREL WTA TOUR a difficult one.
No longer could she rely solely on her talent to win matches. She floundered for several months while she sought direction for her natural ability. She found the person to guide her in Warwick Bashford, a coach from South Africa.
The decision to part with the coaching system of the French Federation was a difficult one for the teenager. Suddenly the support system disappeared and Mauresmo felt the Federation believed it was only a matter of time before she failed and came back into their fold.
Bashford saw the talent in Mauresmo immediately and sought to install in her the willingness to make the necessary commitment both on and off the court.
After some poor results the young lady from Bornel, France decided it was time for a change. She is no longer content to park herself on the baseline and bang away. She is learning to take the ball earlier and to be more aggressive in finishing the point.

Stephen Bierley finds Amélie Mauresmo in good humour and the form to claim her first major title in the French Open.
By Guardian Newspapers, 5/23/2004 Quick-witted, passionate, vulnerable, courageous. Of all the leading women tennis players, France's Amélie Mauresmo is the most complex. As a junior she was top of her world; as a teenager she reached the final of the Australian Open. Now, just over a month short of her 25th birthday, she believes she is edging ever closer to her twin goals of winning a grand slam title, preferably the French Open, and becoming the world No1. "Right now I have more confidence in myself. I grew up."
She has good reason to be ebullient, having just won leading back-to-back titles in Berlin and Rome.
Yet this year has been especially difficult. Her father, Francis, died in March. She has also split up with her girlfriend, Pascale Arribe. Those close to Mauresmo have hinted that she felt guilty about both, yet all seem agreed that the fact that she has managed to deal with the losses may have been of considerable significance when it came to her recent success on court.
No one has ever doubted her talent. Mauresmo is a natural, with a backhand to rival the current world No1, Justine Henin-Hardenne, of Belgium. The question mark that has hung insidiously over her, ever since she lost the Australian Open final to Martina Hingis, has been her temperament, her mental fragility.
