Most inspirational player/athlete (past or present)?
When did you first become interested / show an interest in tennis?
When I was a kid, around six and my parents used to play at the local club.
Most thrilling moment in sports.
I think it was in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona when Brazil won the volleyball competition. It was a very exciting match. I love volleyball so that made it twice as exciting for me.
What is the biggest challenge you have overcome in tennis?
For me it has been to forget defeats. That was always a thing that was not helping my game. When I overcame it, it helped me a lot.
What was your most important victory?
I think that by now everyone knows this one: Roland Garros 1997.

Search Tennis Kuerten Wins Masters Cup and Top Ranking for 2000 Dateline: 12/03/00 Gustavo Kuerten had to defeat Andre Agassi in today's Masters Cup final in Lisbon to overtake Marat Safin for the number one ranking for the year 2000. Agassi entered the final on a hot streak, having won his previous matches easily, but Kuerten produced a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 masterpiece. Kuerten hit 50 winners and 19 aces to Agassi's 7 and 15, respectively. Agassi had seven break opportunities, but on each one, Kuerten came up with an exceptional serve or groundstroke. Kuerten's backhand was finding the deep corners and, along with his inside-out forehands, the side pockets (corners of the service boxes). Agassi tried to mix in with his usual powerful drives an assortment of higher, more topspun balls, angles, and net approaches, but the only shots that showed any tendency to bother Kuerten were balls that bounced quite low. Agassi tried to wear Kuerten down by running him, but Kuerten covered the court with unusual ease. He often managed to turn the tables on Agassi in mid-point, converting a defensive situation into an offensive opportunity. Both players hit lots of sharply angled groundstrokes, which made the match particularly entertaining. Agassi tried taking a few returns very early, then backing up for others, but Kuerten's serve often had exceptional angle, too, and as Agassi commented in his post-match interview, Kuerten's serve was very difficult to read.

JOINVILLE, Brazil, 15 July 2005 – Gustavo ‘Guga’ Kuerten signed a pledge on behalf of the rights of children and adolescents to play sports on Wednesday at the Joinville Tennis Club in Brazil. The pledge is part of an agreement between UNICEF and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). “The practice of sports is essential for the development of every boy and girl. It increases the learning capacity, teaches important lessons about respecting others, leadership, team work and offers the opportunity for a healthier life to children and adolescents,” said UNICEF’s Manuel Buvinch. A young enthusiast receives tips from Guga. In the pledge, Kuerten and other leading Brazilian players joined forces to promote the rights of every child and adolescents to play sports and enjoy leisure activities. “It’s an honor to participate in this pledge with UNICEF,” said Kuerten. “I grew up practicing sports. When I was very young I always spent the afternoons at school practicing sports and doing all types of activities. Therefore I know how important and beneficial sport has been for my life, both personally and professionally. UNICEF and the ATP can help a lot and I hope I can contribute in the best possible way so all the children can play sports,” said Kuerten, whose own Guga Kuerten Institute assists thousands of Brazilian children. In 2003, Kuerten received the prestigious Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award, as voted by ATP players.

Winner There would be no more popular winner of this year's French Open than 'Guga'. Already a crowd favourite at Roland Garros, Kuerten won a permanent place in their affections when he captured his third French Open crown in 2001 and drew a heart in the clay of Court Philippe Chatrier. A repeat seems unlikely in 2004. The former world number one underwent hip surgery in 2002 and has since been a shadow of his former self. Nonetheless, he won two titles last year and in February he delighted his adoring fans in Brazil by winning a trophy on home soil in Costa Do Sauipe - the 20th of his career. With one of the finest backhands in the game, Kuerten is comfortable on hard-courts but he comes into his own on clay.
