Yevgeny Kafelnikov was born on 18 February 1974 in Sochi, Russia. Kafelnikov became a tennis pro in 1992 and amassed $23,883,797 of prize money. His proudest achievement in tennis is that he won 26 singles titles. After a relatively lacklustre 2003 where Russia's first world number 1 in tennis failed to win an ATP singles title for first time in 10 years and finished with his lowest ATP Ranking over the same period, it now appears that Kafelnikov has effectively retired from tennis and taken up poker Kafelnikov is incredibly popular in his country and not just for his tennis. After winning his fifth straight title in Moscow, Kafelnikov donated his first prize of $137,000 to the families of the victims in the October 4, 2001 Russian plane crash near his hometown of Sochi. In an interview with The Independent about his move from tennis to poker Kafelnikov said: "The most important thing was not to disappoint my fans. It is very hard to earn a good image in Russia. Once you do, you're a hero. But if you then do something wrong, you're treated like, like, I can't even think of a word to describe it. I dedicated myself to playing for Russia. I played all Davis Cup matches, I won Olympic gold, I still have a very good image. "So when people on the street in Moscow ask why I stopped playing, I say 'because I don't want to see you people crying when I lose'. They understand that."

http://www.rowztennis.com/viewfromrowz_38.html
Yevgeny Kafelnikov is the litmus test of the ATP. Middle ground vanishes when the prickly Russian is mentioned. You either love him or hate him. We fall into the former category, but realize many tennis fans dislike the two-time Grand Slam champion. Let us count the ways. First, Yevgeny Kafelnikov's game is beautiful to watch. His down-the-line backhand alone sends shivers through any tennis hack. How can he hit that shot with such precision? He makes it look easier than beating Anna Kournikova in the first round. The former No. 1 isn't too shabby on the forehand side or at the net. Last year, he was the only player to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup and the Gold Flake/ATP World Doubles Championship. In other words, when he wants, he can employ any shot to drive opponents wild.
While Kafelnikov clearly possesses the tools to reign supreme on the ATP, he often falls behind his lower-ranked opponents. Alexander Popp nearly served him off the court in their U.S. Open match last fall, and John McEnroe chided Kafelnikov for playing behind in his early rounds at this year's final Grand Slam. His lackadaisical approach alienates some fans, but it's actually endearing to others. A certain breed of tennis fan likes his or her favorite player to struggle a bit; otherwise, their cheers seem for naught. Yevgeny Kafelnikov's fans feel that their rousing efforts and voices lift him to victory. If they can't hit the groundstroke for him, they can at least encourage and support his efforts.

Russian Tennis Player Yevgeny Kafelnikov Beat World's Top-ranked Gustavo Kuerten
Russian tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov who is successfully competing in the Masters Cup world championship in Sydney, Australia, with prize money of 3.7 million US dollars defeated on November 16 the world's No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten from Brazil 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
This match began unsuccessfully for Yevgeny who holds fourth place in the rating list of the Association of Professional Tennis (ATP). He lost his serve in the very first game, but it proved to be only an annoying episode. Further on, the Russian brilliantly won four games in succession, taking two Kuerten's serves. He finished the set at a high note, making a break anew.
The players, as it were, changed roles in the second set. Kuerten took two games on Kafelnikov's serve, losing only one on his own.
The competitors were at first a match to each other in the third set but Kafelnikov made a break in the fourth game and took the lead 3-1. After that he had only to retain the lead, and did not lose his chance.
