in Wimbledon ONE of the most extraordinary Wimbledon championships of all time climaxed last fortnight amidst soccer-stadium-like scenes of emotional outpouring in the oldest and most famous tennis stadium in the world, with a 125-1 outsider crowned the new men's champion on what is popularly known as People's Monday. ADAM BUTLER/AP
Goran Ivansevic with the Challenge Cup on Centre Court on July 9. Goran Ivanisevic's spectacular five-set victory over Pat Rafter in a final that was the best witnessed on the famous grass court in 20 years was a fitting end to a tournament that featured one of the most eventful men's championships in the long history of Wimbledon. Although the All England Lawn Tennis Club has had to extend the championship before to the third Monday because of the famously fickle English weather, this was the first time that a men's final was actually scheduled for that day. Perhaps electrified by the atmosphere on the centre court the 29-year-old Croatian, who became the first wild card to win a Grand Slam championship, and the 28-year-old Australian served up a wonderful treat. The women's event, for once, rode piggyback on the men's championship and, in terms of dramatic twists, had very little to offer as Venus Williams extended her lease on the famous Venus Rosewater Dish, beating the gifted little Belgian Justine Henin in the final.

Tennis: Goran's down but not out
PAUL Scholes and Co took the gloss off a superb Wimbledon return by Croatian tennis ace Goran Ivanisevic last night.
But while his soccer compatriots are out of Euro 2004, the big-hitting Ivanisevic remains in the hunt for the title he lifted so dramatically against Pat Rafter three years ago.
Ivanisevic raced through his opening match against Russian rival Mikhail Youzhny with time to spare before the big kick-off in Lisbon. But his straight sets win couldn't inspire his countrymen against rampant England.
Asked how he would feel if Croatia didn't win, soccer daft Ivanisevic replied: "I will be sad but not depressed."
There was certainly no reason to be depressed by his first match at Wimbledon in three years. Despite several rain delays he rattled through a 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 win in under two hours.
Ivanisevic has promised to mark his final Wimbledon with a spectacular farewell. But his celebrations could remain under wraps for a while yet.

Wistful Goran welcomes the end
His advice is sound never stop believing. But Goran Ivanisevic knows that, for him, the time has almost come. Years of patching his body together have inevitably taken their toll and the 32-year-old Croatian will bring down the curtain on his roller-coaster career at Wimbledon next week. But the fact that he will even walk through the gates of the All England Club next Monday bears testament to his formidable belief and determination. It is also a glimpse into the incredible love affair the hulking former champion has built up with the most prestigious tournament of all. "Listen, Wimbledon means everything to me," he smiles, a scar the size of a large caterpillar standing proud on top of his serving shoulder. "It is where everything began for me. I qualified there in 1988, that was the start of everything. "I played three finals and two semi-finals and I thought `that's it'. Then I won it. "Wimbledon...it took a lot of years from my life, but it gave me a lot, so we have a special relationship, me and Wimbledon." Nothing exemplified that special relationships more than one magical fortnight in 2001.

A colourful, yet complex character, Goran Ivanisevic is arguably one of the great tennis personalities in the sterile climate of the game. It could be said that he brings not only his talent, but also a great deal more than just technically great tennis to our courts. His Early Days Goran was born on 13 September, 1971, the son of a professor of engineering (his father Srjdan) and a chemical engineer (his mother Gorana, after whom he is named). He grew up in the coastal city of Split, then part of what was Yugoslavia, now known as Croatia. He was an athletic lad, winning the city's cross-country championship five times and also excelling at sport in school. At the age of seven, he started playing tennis, and it became evident then that he could have quite a promising career in the game. In 1987, at the age of 17 he turned professional, and at that time, ranked 954

Andy Roddick captured his third Stella Artois Championship in as many years after defeating Ivo Karlovic 7-6(7), 7-6(4) in the final at The Queen's Club. Roddick, the two-time defending champion, needed just 1 hour, 20 minutes to put his name alongside John McEnroe (1979-81) and Lleyton Hewitt (2000-02) as the only players to win three consecutive titles.
After the singles final, former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic defeated four-time Stella Artois winner John McEnroe 9-7 in a Pro set exhibition.
In the doubles final, Bob and Mike Bryan sucessfully defended their title with a 7-6(9), 7-6(4) victory over top seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirny to win their third Queen's Club crown.
