G. IVANISEVIC/C. Moya
MODERATOR: Ladies and Gentlemen, the first question for Goran, please.
Q. That looked like an almost perfect match for you.
GORAN IVANISEVIC: It was. Not the first set, because maybe I was a little nervous because I never beat him. I thought this is my chance on grass to beat him. Then I started a little slow. I lost my serve straightaway, then I broke back. I had a set point, but was not the perfect set. I missed a lot of first serves.
Somehow I just pick up my game. The second, third and fourth set was just perfect. I can't ask for better.
Q. Did you surprise yourself with the way you played in those sets?
GORAN IVANISEVIC: No. I know I playing good tennis. I just have to put couple of matches together, you know. Now I'm able to put two, so we see how I going to figure out how to put three, you know.
But playing great tennis, crowd behind me, just having fun there.
Q. When do you think you last played that well?
GORAN IVANISEVIC: Not last year, for sure. You know, I always dreamed that I can, you know, just after two years of not great tennis, you know, just come here and try to play well. So far I'm doing it, doing it good.
Hopefully I can continue like that and keep my mind. Doesn't matter who I play; it matters how I play. When I play good, then I think I can beat anybody here. But when I play bad, then I cannot even beat some womans on the tour.

Ivanisevic turned pro in 1988 and quickly gained a reputation for tremendous serves (he stands 6'4") and a freewheeling personality. He was ranked #2 in the world several times in the mid-1990s; by 2001 he had made over $18 million in career winnings, but his talent had waned and many considered him over the hill. He made it to Wimbledon in 2001 only after receiving a wild-card berth from the tournament committee, then shocked everyone by playing his way into the finals and defeating Australian Pat Rafter in five sets to become the Wimbledon champion. Ivanisevic won bronze medals in both singles and doubles (with Goran Prpic) at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. FOUR GOOD LINKS

quarter-final Ivanisevic is back in the big-time after a long time on the periphery. The big-server's win at Wimbledon - his most coveted prize - thrust him back up the rankings and into the limelight. However, that victory, in five sets over Pat Rafter, was Ivanisevic's only win of the year. He failed to make much of an impression elsewhere on the tour, but as Wimbledon showed, the bigger the stage the better the Croat plays. Ivanisevic first played at Melbourne in 1989 and the surface will suit his game as he attempts to better the three quarter-final appearances he has made down the years. Time will tell whether he is content to merely live out his dream of being Wimbledon champion, or if that success has given him the drive for more big titles? Big-serving Goran this year finally won what he considered to be the most coveted prize in tennis - the Wimbledon title. Having finished runner-up on three occasions, the Croat finally triumphed with a thrilling win over Pat Rafter. His US Open record is less prolific, having reached the semi-final stage just the once. Enjoy!
'I'm Genius'
~Goran, Wimbledon 2001 after beating Tim Henman
"I was down to just one pair of shoes and asked my manager to get me some extra, but they didn't arrive yet," he said. "I don't know what I'm going to do, but in any case, I must play a lot better if I want to win tomorrow."
~Goran, after he broke one shoe during his match, and didn't have a spare
"I might play in another final there and don't want that stupid (runner's up) plate for a fourth time. I am going to win Wimbledon one day even if it is the over 40s doubles ..."
A reporter asked Ivanisevic whether his Tuesday loss to Byron Black could be attributed to jetlag incurred as a result of flying from Los Angeles to Montreal. Ivanisevic responded: "No, my brain is jet lagged for the last eight months." `I was pretty nice to the racket all last week. I was surprised how easy it broke. Maybe there is something wrong with it, or I'm too strong.'' After breaking his racket against Kafelnikov in the 1995 Wimbledon QF "I played so bad. It hurts ... At this moment, I could break all my rackets and quit tennis.'' On Palm Springs, California

Search Tennis Why Goran and Venus Won Wimbledon Finals Dateline: 07/09/01 Goran Ivanisevic had virtually disappeared from professional tennis for the last two years, and, ranked 125 in the world, he got into this year's Wimbledon on a wild card granted by the tournament committee. In a rare rain-delayed Monday match, he became the first wild card ever to win a Grand Slam, defeating Patrick Rafter 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7. Ivanisevic would likely be the most surprising champion ever if not for this being his fourth final. He had made three previous finals, in 1992, 1994, and 1998, only to lose. Goran had gained a reputation for suffering mental meltdowns of varying magnitudes. He held himself together well against Rafter, though, and his huge serve, the weapon that has made Wimbledon his best venue, came through when he needed it. Ivanisevic served 27 aces against Rafter, and a great many more service winners. He also broke his own Wimbledon record of 206 aces for the tournament, getting 213. Goran's serving games generally went much more easily than Rafter's. Rafter's favorite serve, a twist (kick) serve that jumps up on the opponent, often gave the 6'4" Ivanisevic a ball at just the height he likes it. Ivanisevic returned well against the serve-and-volley attack Rafter attempted on almost every first and second serve throughout the match. Patrick's best serve against Goran was the jammer, where he would make the ball curve into Goran, giving that tall body a long way to go to get out of the way. Rafter's first serve percentage was below par, but what he needed most was a wide, sliding slice serve to make the left-handed Goran reach low on his two-handed backhand side. With a better slice serve, Rafter would almost certainly have won this match.

SYDNEY, Australia Two-time U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter and three-time Wimbledon runner-up Goran Ivanisevic arrived at the Olympic Village on Tuesday with something to prove in the Games tennis tournament starting next week. Slumping Goran Ivanisevic hopes to turn things around in Sydney. Rafter and Ivanisevic both aim to rebound from first-round disasters at the recently completed U.S. Open. Australian Davis Cup star Rafter was bounced out of the season's last major in five sets by unheralded Galo Blanco of Spain, while Ivanisevic collapsed against Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty, winning just one more game after taking the first set. Rafter, who has struggled to keep fit since shoulder surgery almost a year ago, said his shoulder was not troubling him as he prepared for his first Olympics. "I'm used to playing for Australia and used to playing in the Davis Cup," said Rafter, who won back-to-back U.S. Open titles in 1997-98. "This (Olympics) takes in the individualism of the sport, while the Davis Cup is purely a team thing. "You don't feel any individual pride (in Davis Cup) and at the Olympics, if you get a gold, I think you're going to feel that it's an individual achievement."

HISTORY
ATP Tour World Championships For 10 years, the final highlight of the ATP season was the ATP Tour World Championship. From 1990 to 1995, it was played in Frankfurt, Germany, before moving to Hannover in 1996. The inaugural tournament was won by Andre Agassi, who defeated world No. 1 and 1989 Masters champion Stefan Edberg. Pete Sampras, who was to dominate the event throughout the '90s collecting five out of ten titles, captured his first title in 1991 - his second big win after his surprise triumph at the 1990 U.S. Open. On his way to the title he defeated Wimbledon champion Michael Stich, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and Jim Courier in the final.
Jim Courier had no luck in the finals. One year after losing to Sampras, he was defeated by local hero Boris Becker who secured his second year-end title. Home domination continued in 1993, when Michael Stich marched through the tournament without losing a match - making him the only undefeated champion in the 1990s.
Pete Sampras was back to claim his second title in 1994 with a win over Becker; in 1995, Michael Chang managed to survive the round robin stage for the first time and eliminated Sampras to reach the final, where Boris Becker proved too strong for him. The German won the last title in Frankfurt.
