NI_MPU('middle'); And now here he is, in the players' area of an international tennis tournament, a notoriously difficult subject. The comedian Linda Smith once described him as "the human form of beige". One writer considered getting her breasts out to provoke a response. Another, the Daily Mail's Lynda Lee-Potter, decided the only way to get information from him, even small facts like where he spent his honeymoon, was to make up false statements so that he would correct them. But it is still revealing. To journey into Henman is to journey into ourselves, and not just because he is British. Everyone born in these islands, and a good number who have settled here, has a little Henman in them. And that, perhaps, is why we are cruel to him. Our view of him, like our attitude to Charles and Camilla, tells us more about ourselves than about him, because in truth we hardly know him. Could it be that this national symbol of failure is actually a clever, overachieving fighter? What is such a supposedly dull character doing out of the sports pages? And why is he so bloody English? Unusually for a big corporation, this is an ambitious effort for the public good, in which 40% of the budget for promoting a soap powder is to be spent supporting tennis, including a search for talent. Every 7- to 10-year-old, even if they have never held a racket, is being invited to test their speed, balance and co-ordination at an Ariel Tennis Ace day to see if they have the potential to be a champion. The roadshow was in Manchester yesterday, is in Bristol today, and goes next to Ipswich, Southampton, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Free coaching and the chance to train at Wimbledon are on offer.

Even though there has been some controversy about Greg coming over from Cananda to join us, as far as I am concerned, the more the merrier, and I wish him well with his engagement to yet another Lucy. Some poeple get all the luck...If only my parents had thought about Lucy when they were naming me...or maybe not !!! 1999 has been a great time for Tim, being number 6 in the world and reaching the last four at Wimbledon. An Interview with Tim Henman November 19, 2004 Q. Bad luck. It must get frustrating when you raise the level of your game to the point you did in the second set and still come up short? TIM HENMAN: I improved in the second set. I certainly played some better tennis there, but I don't think I really, you know, raised it high enough. I was certainly, you know, starting to put more pressure on him, keeping my serve and keeping my nose in front. But, you know, there's no question that the better player won on the night. I never really felt like I was able to get into his service games. The games that I got into, I was always sort of coming back from 40-15 down, or I never really managed to put some pressure on him early. But, you know, that's the way it goes, you know. I think you sometimes aren't allowed to play your best. In those conditions, I felt early on I was really struggling to make an impact to hurt him. Even on my service games, they were all a struggle.

The Big Debate: Does 'Tiger' Tim Henman have any realistic chance of winning Wimbledon before he finishes his career?
Tim Henman can go all the way By Richard Mennear Sports Editor Tiger Tim will never make it By Paul Collins Sports Editor Henmania is about to grip the nation over the coming weeks as the famous Wimbledon tournament gets underway at the end of June. Henmania lasts about 10 days into the tournament, unless it is rain delayed, in which case we have 11 days of flying the Union Jack flags and watching the TV, listening to the woman in the crowd with an abnormally high pitched voice, screaming ‘COME ON TIM.’ Watching Tim Henman usually means being taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions, with the joys of him edging closer to that coveted trophy, followed by the agony and pain of defeat. Do we really think the Oxford born public schoolboy will ever win Wimbledon, or any of the Grand Slams? Henman possesses a wide range of shots, and he is one of the best serve and volley players in the world. For those with little knowledge of tennis, this means that he likes to serve and get straight up to the net and volley!(Sounds easy)! However, the game today is not won only on good shot selection, it is also based on power, which, compared to the top players in the world, Tim does not have. The likes of Roger Federer, Marat Safin, Leyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick all have a hugely powerful serves. If they find themselves 0-30 down, they have the weaponry in their game to serve up 3 aces, and win.

Roger Federer wins his 23rd straight final
Roger Federer gave the crowd another demonstration of all-encompassing tennis know-how, after winning his 23rd straight final against Andre Agassi at the U.S. Open title yesterday, and sixth grand slam title of his young career.
Federer and Agassi thrilled and entertained, together, they put on a lovely show, displaying every imaginable shot, crafting points in ways seldom seen.
The audiences enjoyed the match, and were equally satisfied. Posted by H.A.R. at 02:46 PM Comments (0) Email to a friend

    Nadal Beats Agassi in Montreal
The 19-year-old Spainard Rafael Nadal won on a hardcourt for the first time, beating the 35-year-old Agassi in the Rogers Cup final Sunday.
It was the top-seed's third victory in a row and his ATP-tour-leading ninth tournament win of the year. His eight previous wins, including the French Open, were on slower clay courts, that is why playing on a hardcourt and winning was such a biggy!
It was the first meeting between Nadal, considered the sport's next superstar, and Agassi, who has won 60 tournaments, including eight grand slams and three wins in the Canadian event, in his 19-year career.

    Tennis: Tim thanks the fans
TIM Henman thanked the crowd for their support after he again put them through a nerve-wracking experience at Wimbledon.
Henman lost the opening set of his first round clash with Spanish debutant Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, and faced two set points in the second set tie-break.
The British number one eventually came through 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-2 on court one, but admitted he was well below par against a player who had never set foot on a grass court before Sunday.
Henman, who lost an amazing 45 points at the net, made 49 unforced errors and served 10 double faults, said: "The support is phenomenal and the way things are going in Portugal there is a buzz about the general public right now and it was good to have their support.
"I'm sure I'm going to get that throughout the tournament and hope it's going to last two weeks."
Henman mouthed `thank you' to an initially subdued crowd which had earlier heard some rather less pleasant words emanating from the mouth of the fifth seed.

Tennis: Henman ready for greatest test
ON TOP FORM: Tim Henman TIM Henman was putting the finishing touches to his bid for French Open glory today in what has become another saga of England v Argentina.
If Henman is to become the first Briton to win the French Open since Fred Perry in 1935, he must beat Guillermo Coria in tomorrow's semi-final and then either one of two more Argentinians David Nalbandian and Gaston Gaudio.
It is a big ask for Henman, even though his game has improved immeasurably during a clay-court season in which he has demonstrated he can serve and volley and win on tennis' slowest surface.
In Coria, however, he meets the fleetest man in tennis, the third seed and one who is most people's tip to be the champion here.
"It is no surprise Henman is there because he has been playing very well," said Coria. "He can play on any sort of court and on any surface. But when I have reached a semi-final I don't mind who my opponent is.
"My experience of last year is going to be very important. I have been focused all week. I know what my objective is. I know what I want to achieve.
