Other Resources Graf showed so much promise in tennis as a youngster that her father sold his business and started a tennis school, at which she was the prize pupil. At thirteen, she become the youngest player ever to win the West German eighteen-and-under championship. When Billie Jean King saw her play as a young teen-ager, she correctly predicted that Graf would win the grand slam someday because of her strength, quickness, and tennis "instinct." Graf won her first grand slam singles championship in the 1987 French Open. The following year, she became the third woman in history to win a true grand slam, taking the Australian, French, U. S., and Wimbledon singles titles. (The other two were Maureen Connolly and Margaret Court.) She also won a Gold Medal, as tennis returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1924. In 1989, Graf won three legs of the grand slam, losing to Arantxa Vicario in the final match of the French Open. She won the Australian Open singles for the third straight time in 1990, but then Monica Seles began to dominate women's tennis. Graf won at Wimbledon in 1991 and 1992, but Seles won the other grand slam singles titles both of those years. After winning the Australian Open championship in 1993, Seles was stabbed in the back by a crazed Graf fan during a tournament in Germany. Although the wound wasn't life threatening, Seles was out for than a year.

In 1982, at the age of 13, Graf became the second-youngest tennis player ever to be ranked as a professional. By 1985 Graf had reached the number-six ranking, but she had not yet won a tournament. In 1986, however, she won eight singles championships, including victories in tournament finals over the dominant players in women's tennis

Steffi Graf
During her 17 years as a professional tennis player, Steffi Graf won 22 grand slams, more than 100 WTA singles titles and an Olympic gold medal. As icy cool in her personal life as in her game, for years she had only had one focus: tennis. But now retired, she has found love, motherhood and married life with with fellow athlete Andre Agassi. It seems the tennis star who once said, "Nothing gives me those highs like playing tennis does," has found a new kind of happiness off the courts.
Stefanie Maria Graf was born on June 14, 1969, to Peter and Heidi Graf in Mannheim, Germany. Her father supported the family by selling cars and insurance and took up coaching tennis to earn some extra income. After Steffi revealed an interest in the game, Peter gave her a wooden racket and the two began hitting a ball around the living room. She progressed quickly, playing her first tournament aged five – it proved a frustrating experience, however, and she left the court in tears after being defeated.
Undiscouraged, Steffi went on to win the junior tournament the following year, displaying the determination that was to become her hallmark. Supremely talented, by the time she was eight she was committed to the sport, training with her father in the early hours of the morning before heading off to school.

Steffi Graf
By Sharon Fabian Stefanie Graf was a great tennis player. She won the gold medal at the Seoul, Korea Olympics in 1988. She won a silver medal in 1992. In 1988, she also won all four major tennis tournaments the Australian Open, the French Open, the US Open, and Wimbledon. In fact, she won major tennis tournaments year after year. She was ranked #1 for 186 consecutive weeks in 1987-1990. She was ranked #1 for 377 weeks altogether, longer than any other tennis player.
The career of a champion athlete is different from the career of, say, a nurse or a banker. An athletic career often starts at a very young age, and ends at a young age too. What is the life of a famous athlete really like? Of course, everyone is different, but here is what Steffi's life has been like so far.
Steffi Graf was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1969. She began playing tennis at the age of four, encouraged by her father. She was really good at it, and her father continued to coach her. By the age of 13, Steffi was already being recognized as a rising star in tennis and was ready to turn pro. When she was first ranked #1, she was still in her teens. She won her Olympic medals in her teens and early twenties. She continued to win tournaments for a number of years after that, and then retired from tennis at the age of thirty.

Search Tennis Back from Injuries Dateline: 03/13/99 Two of the WTA Tour's biggest forehand hitters have reappeared this year after absences due to injury. This week's Evert Cup at Indian Wells, California has shown Chanda Rubin and Steffi Graf both playing with renewed strength. After a look at their comeback stories, we'll find a few resources to get you patched up for the new season, too. Finally recovered from her 1996 wrist surgery, Chanda Rubin is off to a great start in 1999. Following upon her second career singles title in Hobart, Australia, Rubin scored a well-earned upset of world number one Martina Hingis on Wednesday. Rubin is streaky, but when her strokes are on target, she's one of the most exciting players on the tour, hitting forehands that mix power, angles, and topspin with devastating effect. On the way to beating Hingis, Rubin took out two other higher-ranked players, Amanda Coetzer and Conchita Martinez. Steffi Graf has been plagued by injuries throughout her spectacular career. The list of her injuries is almost as long as her incredible list of titles. After a long absence due to wrist, ankle, and other problems, Graf is healthy again. Known for her lethal forehand and powerful serve, Graf also moves like a gazelle and has an extremely effective backhand slice. Rubin cited Graf's backhand as one of the key factors in their

adidas presents Steffi Graf and Justine Henin-Hardenne at Roland Garros and brings “Impossible is Nothing” to life
adidas presented two of the most dominating female tennis players from two generations to celebrate the special history they share: Justine Henin-Hardenne and Steffi Graf met for the first time ever to bring to life their inspiring “Impossible is Nothing” story at the Centre National d’Entrainament (CNE) in Paris. Justine Henin-Hardenne’s inspiring story was a part of the “Impossible is Nothing” brand campaign adidas launched in 2004. When Justine was only 10 years old, she saw her childhood idol Steffi Graf play at the 1992 Roland Garros final. Still during the match, Justine turned to her mother and said that “one day I will play here and win.” Now, at age 22, she is one of the most successful and dominating tennis players of her generation. She has already three Grand Slam titles, including Roland Garros in 2003, and reached the top ranking to make her own “Impossible is Nothing” story come true. “‘Impossible is Nothing’ means to me that you have to believe in what you do and you have to believe in the people around you. Being the No. 1 tennis player in the world seemed impossible to me at first. But then step by step I started to realize that when I give everything I have, I can reach my goals and the promise I made – and I did,” Justine Henin-Hardenne said.
