Agassi Takes Singles, U.S. Wins Doubles
With no sweat and a couple of tears, Andre Agassi became a gold medalist Saturday. The second-generation Olympian overwhelmed Sergi Bruguera of Spain, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, then succumbed to the emotion of the victory on the medal stand. He shared a post-victory embrace with his father, Mike, an Olympic boxer for Iran in 1948 and 1952. In doubles action, Mary Joe and Gigi Fernandez took the gold medal, defeating Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova of the Czech Republic.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel Tennis Lessons From A Pro: Gigi Fernandez By Charles Bricker February 22, 2003
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
There was a mischievous smile on Gigi Fernandez's face as she recalled the first time she sailed a racket in anger. "Three years old," she announced. "I was hitting against the wall, and I couldn't beat it." By the time she had won her 17th, and final, Grand Slam doubles title, with a particularly satisfying semifinal win over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Martina Hingis at the 1997 French Open, only the tennis gods could total up the number of rackets Fernandez had flipped and flung on the women's tennis tour. Today, five years into retirement and hardly slowing down, coach Fernandez brings her South Florida women's team to the University of Miami (1 p.m.), where she'll be writing out a lineup card instead of a check to cover her latest round of fines. "I've got to be a role model now," she says. This is not going to be a wildly successful rookie year for Fernandez, whose 2-4 team butts up against the 4-2 Hurricanes and 2-5 Florida International on Sunday at 11 a.m. But her persistent smile says she's having a good time in this second tennis life, and there is a confidence there that things will improve after a couple of good recruiting years.

Gigi Fernandez Named South Florida Tennis Coach
July 10, 2002
TAMPA, Florida (AP) - Tennis star Gigi Fernandez, winner of 17 Grand Slam titles and a two-time Olympic champion, was named the women's tennis coach at the University of South Florida on Wednesday. Fernandez, who retired from professional tennis in 1997, was ranked as the world's No. 1 doubles player for most of her final six seasons. "My goal is to turn the program into a national contender," she said in a statement released by the school. "I'm very excited about this chapter in my life." Fernandez, 38, won 68 career doubles titles, including six French Opens, five U.S. Opens, four Wimbledons and two Australian Opens. She captured 14 of her Grand Slams with doubles partner Natasha Zvereva. They won 38 doubles titles and six consecutive Grand Slams from the 1992 French Open through Wimbledon in 1993. It is the second-longest streak behind Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver (eight). The Puerto Rico native replaces Sherry Bedingfield, who retired this year after 23 years at South Florida. Fernandez has coached the Puerto Rican national team since 1999. This is the first collegiate coaching job for Fernandez, who won the 1992 and 1996 Olympic women's doubles gold medals with Mary Joe Fernandez.
