LATINO JUVENILE BIOGRAPHY FERNÁNDEZ Mary Joe's favorite moment was the doubles match in Barcelona in which she and Gigi Fernandez won Olympic gold. This victory meant a lot to her. To win the gold, the pair had to defeat the Spanish doubles pair—Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martínez—in front of the king and queen of Spain. It was a sweet victory for Mary Joe because she had been asked to play for Spain but had refused. "I'm an American," she said. "I could play for Spain, where my father was born, or the Dominican Republic, where I was born. But...it would be difficult to play for another country. I am very patriotic." In fact, she had been asked to play in the 1988 Olympics for the Dominican Republic but had said no. She said she would rather represent the United States someday.

Excerpts from Ladies of the Court: Grace and Disgrace on the Women's Tennis Tour
by Michael Mewshaw, 1993, Crown Publishers, NY
This book is still in print in a revised paperback edition from 2001 with an additional chapter, obtainable from Amazon.com via the link above . The 1993 edition is reviewed here.
Ladies of the Court
is a description of the players, coaches, officials, and some tourneys on the 1991 WTA Tour, similar in some ways to the description provided by John Wertheim's Venus Envy a decade later, while not so tightly focused on gossip about the players themselves. Although Mewshaw shows more general writing skill than Wertheim, some sports fans might have to keep a dictionary handy, in case they, like me, cannot quite recall exactly what words like "lugubrious" mean.
The book is fairly informative about the WTA Tour in general, at a point when the WTA exec Gerry Smith was eager to break away from Virgina Slims/Philip Morris sponsorship, but didn't quite know how to do it. But the book dwells far too much on hyping sexual topics, particularly lady athletes relationships with their coaches, and whether it is appropriate that they have any. Unfortunately, when matches are described, it is usually in terms of losing, rather than winning, often belittling the skill of the players. Still, this book is probably an essential part of a record of the era of Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini, and Mary Joe Fernandez, as well as then 17-year-old Monica Seles and 15-year-old Jennifer Capriati.

The bulk of The Handbook of Tennis
The 1992 edition keeps many of these photos, and adds photos of Steffi Graf, Gabriella Sabatini, Jennifer Capriati, Mary Joe Fernandez, Natalie Zvereva, and more. The pics added in 1992 aren't as good as the older photos, but the book is still worth buying for the photos alone. The tennis instruction is also well-done (though not without flaws), and there are additional good short sections covering history, racket making and stringing, ball manufacturing, court surfaces, how tournament draws are conducted, and more. The rules of tennis are included, and the book is indexed.
If you could only buy two books for both tennis playing and spectating reference, this might be one of them (the other might be Bud Collins' Total Tennis

Tennis someone - America's Mary Joe Fernandez - Interview
Interview , June, 1994 by Lucy Danzinger LUCY DANZIGER: It seems that everywhere we look every kind of game is being played by everyone these days. Even sports that have traditionally been perceived as exclusive, like tennis and golf, are now opening up and becoming more inclusive and competitive. You're one of the top women's tennis players in the world, and we wanted to talk to you about how you see the sport of tennis changing, and about what role tennis has played in your own life. How did you get your start in the game? Continue article Advertisement
MARY JOE FERNANDEZ: I got into it because my dad used to play with my older sister at the local courts. I would follow them there, and they would let me play against the net or the wall. My dad made a little racket for me and said, "Just go off and don't bother us for a little while." At first it was nothing serious. I just enjoyed playing the game. I would go home and hit the ball against the back door or whatever, the kitchen walls, stuff like that. Then, at about five, I started taking lessons from the local pro, and I started playing tournaments at age six, and I've been competing ever since.

Athens 2004 - Olympic Tennis Preview
ATHENS, Greece - The world's finest tennis players will be on display beginning Sunday in Athens as they compete for gold at the 2004 Olympic Games. Among the 64 entries in this year's Games is world No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne, who makes her return to tennis after a 11-week absense from tennis. Due to a viral illness that sidelined the world's top player, Henin-Hardenne hasn't struck a ball in a WTA Tour match since her second round loss to Tathiana Garbin at Roland Garros. Henin-Hardenne is the top seed in the women's singles draw and will take on Barbora Strycova in her first round match. Henin-Hardenne's quarter of the draw also includes the defending Olympic gold medalist, No.6 seed Venus Williams, who she could see in the quarterfinals. Williams defeated Elena Dementieva for the gold in Sydney and returns to the Games seeking her third Olympic medal (she also won doubles in 2000 with sister Serena). Williams will open against Hungary's Melinda Czink.
