12. Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament 1997 By: Pechter's Travel Guide & Pe
A review of the 1997 event with pictures.
http://www.pbol.com/pechter/evert97/
1997 CHRIS EVERT PRO-CELEBRITY TOURNAMENT Calling all Palm Beach visitors and residents .. do we have an event for you! ! ... an absolutely fantastic weekend! The Chris Evert Pro-Celeb experience seems to get better and better each year. The 1997 charity event had a superb roster of professionals and celebrities ... packed with loads of excitement, laughter, glamour and the realization that it was all for a good cause. Can you believe ... President George Bush, Mike Wallace, Chuck Norris, Chevy Chase and a host of others all on hand for Chris Evert's special weekend? One of the stars on the court was Mary Howard, whose husband Allan is head of New York Life Insurance ... the sponsor for the afternoon activities. All we can say is .. if you have ever dreamt of playing tennis with the pros .. this is the chance to do it. We get photos of everyone...so each one present gets photos with Chris and the other celebs. We are tempted to say .. bright and early next day ... but in reality everyone likes to relax a little on weekend mornings so play begins at 11am on Saturday ... giving everyone plenty of time to arrive without any rushing....that is everyone but those of us who are working! This year the matches were held at the Boca Country Club. A special stadium court was constructed with plenty of seats for everyone .. all with great visibility. There were an ample number of vendors selling their wares and food and drink could be purchased. Again the National Anthem became a "happening". Chris held a contest during the year to select two people to sing the anthem at the opening of the matches on Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of play. We had been to the finals of this contest. There were 26 finalists ... and each one sang the anthem, on a tennis court, in front of a panel of 12 judges from the various South Florida publications ... and People Magazine! When you hear the anthem sung over and over again ... each time by magnificent voices with a great deal of emotion and feeling ... it is extremely moving. We do not know how the judges could make a decision. To us, they were all great.

Chris retired from Professional Tennis in September 1989, after her final match in the U.S. Open. One month later, along with her husband, Olympic Ski Racer, Andy Mill, Chrissie was back on the tennis court hosting the first Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. The first fundraiser for Chris Evert Charities drew widespread attention in the international press. It was proclaimed the most successful, first-year benefit in tennis history. The 1989 event raised more than $350,000 before a sold-out crowd and a national television audience. That inaugural event benefited a campus of drug treatment facilities in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Florida. The treatment facility was built by The Drug Abuse Foundation of Palm Beach County offering treatment and prevention programs at all levels for troubled patients. The facility was built with virtually all labor and materials donated from the community, but with no funding for operations. With the funds provided by Chris Evert Charities, the facility was able to open its doors in early 1991 to fill an immediate need.

Evert, Chris
Chris Evert playing at Wimbledon, 1979 Tony Duffy/Allsport (1954- ), athlete Born on December 21, 1954, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Christine Marie Evert was the daughter of a noted tennis player. She early began taking tennis lessons from her father. Her style evolved rapidly to feature a powerful two-hand backhand and a degree of concentration that often unnerved opponents. At age 15, she beat top-ranked Margaret Smith Court, and in 1971 she became the youngest player to reach the semifinals of the U.S. championship. The following year she advanced to the semifinal round of her first Wimbledon tournament and won the Virginia Slims tournament. In December 1972 Evert turned professional; she won her first professional tournament in March 1973 and graduated from high school soon after. Victories in the 1974 French and Italian championships and at Wimbledon highlighted a remarkable 56-match winning streak. She retained her Italian and French titles in 1975 and won the first of four consecutive U.S. Open titles (1975-78). She was the first woman since Helen Hull Jacobs to do so. In 1976 she won her second Wimbledon title. Despite her occasional troubles on grass courts, she compiled one of the most spectacular records in tennis in clay court competition: as of April 1978 she was undefeated on clay in 118 matches in 24 tournaments. Following her marriage to tennis player John Lloyd in 1979 she adopted the name Evert Lloyd (the couple divorced in 1987). She added to her success with victories at the U.S. Open (1980, 1982), Wimbledon (1981), the Virginia Slims (1987), the French Open (1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1986), and the Australian Open (1982, 1984). She retired from professional tennis in 1989 and became a television commentator, a special advisor to the United States National Tennis Team, and president of the Women's Tennis Association (1982-91). She also founded Chris Evert Charities, which focuses primarily on drug and family problems.

BIOGRAPHY
In 1970, at a small, insignificant tournament in North Carolina, 15-year-old Christine Marie Evert gave notice to the world that a dynamo was on the way up. Chrissie defeated Margaret Court , who had recently completed her singles Grand Slam and was the No. 1 player of the world, 7-6, 7-6.
A year later in the U.S. Open at Forest Hills, Evert reconfirmed by marching resolutely to the semifinalsat 16 years, 8 months, 20 days, the youngest at that time to reach that stage. Before losing to Billie Jean King
Although essentially a slow-court baseline specialist, raised on clay in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where she was born December 21, 1954, the right-handed Evert showed that booming groundstrokes could succeed on the fast Forest Hills, Wimbledon and Australian grass. She was the Little Ice Maiden, a pony-tailed kid, deadpan, with metronomic strokes that seldom missed. Her two-handed backhand, a powerful drive, stimulated a generation of newcomers to copy her, even though her father, teaching pro Jimmy Evert, advised against it. "I didn't teach the two-hander to her," said her father, who had won the Canadian singles in 1947. "She started that way because she was too small and weak to swing the backhand with one hand. I hoped she'd changebut how can I argue with this success?"
