The Tennis Masters Series is a series of nine tennis tournaments held throughout the year in various locations around the world, chiefly in Europe and North America . The tournaments are part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour and are mandatory for the top male players on the professional circuit. The series began after the ATP took over the running of the men's tour in , and was originally known as the Super-9 series. All the tournaments in the series had been in existence for some years before the Super-9 series was launched and were considered to be among the most prestigious events on the tour. Results in the Tennis Masters Series events earn players more world ranking points than regular tournaments, though not as many as Grand Slam events or the year-end Tennis Masters Cup

Stefan Edberg - snubbed by the Tennis Hall of Fame
by M. L. Liu

Word has come that "(Boris) Becker is the lone nominee in the Recent Player Category" on the 2003 Tennis Hall of Fame ballot. (See here This was rather startling news. I had long assumed that Stefan Edberg, who retired in 1996, would be a shoo-in for the nomination and induction, as soon as he became eligible, which happens to be this year. And I am not alone in making this bold assumption: Among Edberg fans there has been talks of making arrangements to attend the induction ceremony next year. And at an exhibition event held in Cape Cod this past July, Brett Haber the emcee introduced Edberg as a "future Hall of Famer." To be perfectly frank, I personally don't give a rat's care about Halls of Fame. I had never paid any attention to them, in any sport. And it didn't escape my attention that when Mats Wilander was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame this year, hardly anyone noticed. But the announcement that Becker rather than Edberg is this year's nominee is jarring, as it amounts to a slight on Stefan Edberg. And it is rather baffling. This is what is posted on the Hall's web site:

28. Edberg Nominated For Hall Of Fame

Thanks, Hall Of Fame,
for finally remembering Stefan Edberg!
M. L. Liu
October, 2003 On September 4 of this year, the International Tennis Hall of Fame announced thus:
INTERNATIONAL TENNIS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2004 BALLOT NEWPORT, RI - Tony Trabert, Chairman of the Enshrinee Nominating Committee and President of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, today announced that Sweden's Stefan Edberg, Germany's Steffi Graf and the USA's Dorothy "Dodo" Cheney have been named to the 2004 Hall of Fame Induction Ballot.
And so after all the rancor and much unhappiness endured by Edberg fans (see http://www.geocities.com/edhead01us/snubbed.html for the full scoop), the International Tennis Hall of Fame (HOF) has finally seen fit to nominate Stefan Edberg. For those who have not been following the saga, here's a synopsis:
In 2002, the HOF announced German Boris Becker as its sole nominee for its 2003 inductee in the "recent players" category. Becker's retirement came after that of Stefan Edberg, and arguably he was not even eligible (as Boris had not yet retired for five years at the time of the announcement). This was considered a slight to Edberg, especially since in the sports world it is considered significant for a player of Edberg's stature to be inducted to the hall of fame as soon as he becomes eligible. Boris Becker was subsequently inducted into the HOF in July of this year in spite of much protest from Edberg fans.
Although I personally still hold a grudge against the HOF, I immediately sent a note to them to convey that Edberg fans are pleased that Stefan finally received the overdue nomination that he so deserved. I also urged other Edberg fans to write to them (

http://www.edberg.de/zitate/zitatebecker.html
