b. Jan. 19, 1966, Vastervik, Sweden
Other Resources A strong, solid baseline player, Edberg won a total of six grand slam singles titles: Wimbledon in 1988 and 1990, the U. S. Open in 1991 and 1992, and the Australian Open in 1985 and 1987. He also teamed with Petr Korda to win the 1996 Australian Open doubles championship and with Anders Jarryd to win the 1987 Australian and U. S. Open doubles titles. Edberg put on a dramatic performance in his 1992 U. S. Open victory. He was losing in the fifth set of three matches, against Richard Krajicek, Ivan Lendl, and Michael Chang, but he pulled out a victory in each. Then he lost the first set of his final match against Pete Sampras before rallying to win in four sets. With his 1990 Wimbledon victory, Edberg took over the world No. 1 ranking from Ivan Lendl and he stayed there through the end of the year. He was also the top-ranked player at the end of the 1991 season, and he was named the ATP Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992. Edberg played for Sweden's Davis Cup team 13 consecutive years, from 1984 through 1996, and Sweden won the cup in four of those years. He was 35-15 in singles play and 12-8 in doubles.

BREWSTER - This is the year of the change-up. Or the fakeout. Or the ''swing and miss,'' as Tom Gullikson called it. The fifth annual Adidas Tennis Smash took place yesterday at the Ocean Edge Resort and 39-year-old retired pro Stefan Edberg came up with a new weapon.

  • To be young, beautiful, and gifted:
    • The 1984 Davis-Cup Double match , my writeup after viewing the match on tape in 2003. A very young Stefan, at 18, along with Anders Jarryd, wowed them at the doubles match that concluded Sweden's second Davis-cup victory. What a treat. Too bad that there weren't more closeups of a very young Stefan. But what aplomb for an 18 year old "youngster." He certainly impressed the three ESPN commentators.
    • Action louder than Words , my writeup on a moment in Edberg's 1985 AO semifinal against Ivan Lendl, where his action did the talking.
    • Pancho Segura: Meet The Wisest Man In Tennis an article which appeared in "Tennis", March, 1986, in which the great Pancho mentioned Stefan several times.
    • "(Australian) Tennis", March 1986 article

He captured 6 Grand Slam singles titles - 2 Australian Open Championships (1985, '87 - the last man to win on Australian grass), 2 Wimbledon Championships (1988, '90) and 2 US Open Championships (1991, '92). Edberg also won the 1996 Australian Open Doubles title (with Petr Korda), and captured the 1987 Australian and US Open Doubles Championships (both with Anders Jarryd).
Edberg, with Jarryd, were named the ATP Doubles Team of the Year in 1987.
Edberg, who turns 38 on January 19, is a former World No. 1 ranked player, having removed Ivan Lendl from the top spot on August 13, 1990. During his career he spent a total of 72 (non-consecutive) weeks at No. 1, and finished the 1990 and 1991 seasons as the No. 1 player in the world. Edberg was ranked in the year-end Top 10 for ten straight years (1985-1994) finishing in the Top 5 from 1985-93. He received ATP Player of the Year honors in 1991, and again in 1992. HALL OF FAME TELECONFERENCE WITH STEFAN EDBERG
TONY TRABERT: I want to welcome everyone on this teleconference. We appreciate your being on board. Of course, for Stefan, who is in Sweden, we appreciate his being available. I'd like to start with asking Stefan a question. I wanted to ask you what it means to you to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
STEFAN EDBERG: Obviously, it's quite an honor, since there are a lot of great players from the past that have been inducted, I'm really glad that I will be one of them, and I'm looking forward to come to Newport this summer.
TONY TRABERT: You know this is the 50th anniversary of the Hall of Fame. We'll have a lot of Hall of Famers back for this particular weekend.
STEFAN EDBERG: Obviously, that will make it very special and it will be great to see some of the players I played with in the past. Also great to have Steffi Graf being inducted at the same time as me. That feels really good.
