Expect Wimbledon winner Venus Williams and runner-up Lindsay Davenport to continue to be among the best players on the WTA tour for the rest of the season, says Tracy Austin of NBCSports.com.
COMMENTARY Tracy Austin NBC Sports WIMBLEDON, England - Fourteen Grand Slams passed since Venus Williams won the last of her previous four majors the 2001 U.S. Open, but she's now a Grand Slam champion again. And I certainly was impressed in how she won the title here over Lindsay Davenport, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 9-7 in a two-hour-45 minute match that's the longest women's match ever played at Wimbledon. Venus surprises many
Venus became the first woman since 1935 to win the Wimbledon trophy after facing a match point and that's unbelievable as far as I'm concerned. I am very surprised that Venus won the title here. She wasn't in my picks of favorites to take home the trophy, that's for sure. I had Justine Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova at the top of my list of probable champions.

Venus Williams celebrates with the trophy after winning the women's final match against Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon.
WIMBLEDON, England - Venus Williams leaned against the wall behind the baseline for several seconds, gasping for air. At the other end of the court, Lindsay Davenport doubled over, using her racket like a cane to rest a bothersome back. Williams had just hit a forehand to win a 25-shot exchange in the third set, the longest point in the longest Wimbledon women's final on record, and neither she nor Davenport looked particularly eager to resume play. They did, of course, and 10 minutes later, Williams' stamina and strokes allowed her to complete a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 9-7 victory over Davenport on Saturday for her third Wimbledon championship and first Grand Slam title in nearly four years. Barely, just barely, better than the top-ranked Davenport on a cloudy afternoon, Williams pulled off two impressive comebacks all at once:

It was the final that no one expected and yet it was Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams who walked out on Centre Court for Saturday's final after the conclusion of Andy Roddick's semi-final with Thomas Johansson. They made an excellent pairing: Davenport, the ignored world No.1 rated only a 12-1 shot at the start of Wimbledon, and Williams, the two-times Wimbledon Champion deemed so far past her best by some detractors that it was difficult to find any odds on her at all. In return for being ignored, they gave us an epic. You would think that when the best player on the planet found herself lining up against the No.14 seed, she would at last be granted the status of favourite for the 2005 title. But no. True to form, the pundits overlooked Davenport and plumped for Williams in the wake of her sensational semi-final victory over Sharapova. No matter that if she won, Williams would be the lowest seed in the Open era to wear the crown. Once again, Davenport was mysteriously the underdog - a status she shrugged off briskly with an early break. Everyone acknowledged before this match began that Williams had played by far her best tennis in at least two years to flatten Sharapova in Thursday's semi-final. The question today was how much that would cost Williams mentally in her quest for the ultimate prize. Would she be able to lift herself again to win the fifth Slam title of her career and her first in almost four years?

Lindsay And Serena Withdraw From Next Week's Event
POSTED: 5:49 pm PDT August 5, 2005 Carson, CA Two of the world's top players, Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams, were forced to withdraw from next week's JPMorgan Chase Open due to injuries. Davenport, who is ranked No. 1, pulled out due to a lower back strain. She originally suffered the injury during her final loss to Venus Williams at Wimbledon. Davenport was forced to retire last week during second-round action at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. Davenport won the JPMorgan Chase Open last year as the top seed. "I am very disappointed that I have to withdraw from the JPMorgan Chase Open and will be unable to defend my title," said Davenport. "I feel this is my hometown tournament and one in which I have always looked forward to playing. My back is just not ready yet for competition. I look forward to returning next year and trying to regain my title." Williams, who is ranked seventh in the world, won the event in Los Angeles in 1999 and 2000 and lost to Davenport in straight sets in the final last year. She continues to be hampered by a left ankle injury.

Training Room Sunday, July 9 Venus tops Davenport for title Associated Press WIMBLEDON, England Venus Williams thrilled at the sight of Zina Garrison playing in the Wimbledon final 10 years ago. As a scrawny 10-year-old who already had pop in her game, she was amazed to see a black woman on TV playing on the most famous lawn in the world, while she and her sister Serena whacked balls on the concrete courts of Compton, Calif. Saturday, July 8 Playing her first Wimbledon final, Venus Williams proved to be very tough mentally. She concentrated extremely well, and her forehand held up as well as expected in a major final. Her serve nearly got her into big trouble, especially when she was serving for the match, up 5-4 in the second set. She had a couple of double faults and looked tight and tense. But Venus came back to play a mature tiebreak. A lot of times when players have the opportunity to serve for the match, they lose it and can't get it back, but Venus was able to recover nicely.

Maria out of US Open

9th September 200
Maria is out of the US Open after she lost 2-6 7-6 6-3 to #4 seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the semis in 2 hours and 14 minutes.
The 1st 4 games of the match were all breaks and Clijsters then held for the 1st hold in the match and took the next 3 games to take the set 6-2. The tennis in the first set was not of high quality with Maria's forehand causing her the most problems. The 2nd set was different, all the games were held until Clijsters was serving for a place in the final and Maria managed to save 5 matchpoints to force a tie-break which she won 7-4. Maria took a bathroom break at the beginning of the 3rd set but she was quickly down 0-4, Maria then managed to take the next 2 games but Clijsters then took a 5-2 lead, Maria came back again to take another game but Clijsters then was able to take the match on her 7th matchpoint to book a place into tomorrow's final against Mary Pierce of France.
