It was learned that Ai Sugiyama was ranked first in the women's double on Oct. 23 according to WTA. Sugiyama at that point already had 6 wins this year. It's the first time for a Japanese player to achieve such feat. Sugiyama wins US open
This time Ai Sugiyama's pairing up with Julie Halard-Decugis proved successful. On Sept 10 they played in the final of the women's doubles. The pair defeated Zimbabwe's Cara Black and Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-0, 1-6, 6-1. After the victory, Japanese Foreign Minister visited the winners and congratulated them for their first grand slam victory. Sugiyama's next challenge is at the Sydney Olympics where she will play with Nana Miyagi. Sugiyama fights in Wimbledon final
Ai Sugiyama formed a team with France's Julie Halard-Decugis in the women's doubles. They went up to the final and played on July 10, but faced a defeat before the Williams sister Serena and women's champion Venus. The score was 6-3,6-2. IN 1999

VICTORY AT THE DOUBLE
Japanese Tennis Star Bags Second Major Win of 2003 (August 26, 2003)
Sugiyama Ai (Jiji) Notch up another victory for Sugiyama Ai, the ace of Japanese women's tennis. In July 2003, Sugiyama and Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the women's doubles crown at Wimbledon, which was Sugiyama's first Wimbledon title. She also teamed with the Belgian to win the doubles at the French Open in June. Having won the women's doubles events in two out of the three major tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon) played so far this year, all eyes will now be on the duo's performance at the US Open from August 25 to September 7. Sugiyama's victory at Wimbledon was the third ever by a Japanese competitor and the first in 28 years, following Sawamatsu Kazuko in the 1975 women's doubles competition and Miki Tatsuyoshi in the 1934 mixed doubles. Combined with consecutive last-16 performances in the singles at both Wimbledon and the French Open, Sugiyama is steadily closing in on the world's tennis elite.

Now serving for the junior set, Date Kimiko recentry took her "Kids Tennis" classes to Vietnam IN October last year, former professional tennis player Date Kimiko brought her popular children's tennis classes overseas for the first time, visiting schoolchildren in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Date has been holding her "Come on Kids Tennis" classes in Japan since she retired from the professional circuit in 1996 after a career that saw her rise as high as fourth in the world rankings. Her goal is to acquaint as many people as possible with the sport„in particular those for whom tennis would normally be inaccessible.
The "Kids Tennis" class in Vietnam was a Japan-Vietnam exchange project held under the auspices of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In Hanoi, approximately 60 local primary school kids and Japanese youngsters attended the class, and in Ho Chi Minh City about 40 Vietnamese children participated.
Since 1986, when Vietnam introduced the Doi Moi policy, which aims at a transition from a planned economy system to a free economy system, the country has achieved high economic growth, and the number of people playing tennis for pleasure has been increasing. However, the tennis population still comprises mostly high-income earners. None of the Vietnamese children who took part in the class had ever gripped a tennis racket before the event and they were all very excited when given a soft ball and light racket, designed specifically for "Kids Tennis." In the class, they delightedly received basic instructions on serving and receiving from Japan's former tennis great.

BIG IN JAPAN
Kimiko Date
One of Japan' leading sportswomen, Kimiko Date achieved a world ranking of sixth place in the WTA rankings before bowing out at the surprisingly young age of twenty-six.
Born in Kyoto in September 1970, Date was encouraged to take up tennis from the age of six, as her parents were keen practitioners of the sport themselves. Although her mother and father supported and nurtured her budding talent, it's interesting to note that they held the traditional attitude toward people born left-handed (as the young Date was) and painstakingly coached her to play right-handed.
Her parents sent her to Sonoda High School, famous for producing tennis players, and she was soon discovered by leading scout Akira Misikuni. In 1986 she won the All Japan Junior Championship, and was in the top four of the All Japan Championship the next year. In the same championship in 1988, she beat top pro Etsuko Inoue, and after graduation from high school in 1989 turned professional.
She appeared in the world rankings at the position of number 321 and soon began attracting attention through her impressive performances. In 1991 her ranking leapt from 112 to 32 after defeating world-number-three Gabriela Sabatini at the Los Angeles WTA semifinals. There then began a series of triumphs over the world's greatest tennis players, putting Date in the spotlight as few Japanese sports people had ever been before. She won her first major title after upsetting both Amy Frazier and Sabine Appelmans at the 1992 Japan Open. In 1994, she won her first overseas championship after defeating Mary Joe Fernandez at the 1994 New South Wales Open in Australia.

But let's not pretend Ai-chan is going to take over the world. Her game still relies on huffing and puffing, and her results in 2003 resulted from playing with greater efficiency rather than adding a new weapon to her arsenal. Perspiration, rather than inspiration, is still the name of her game.
Venus Williams At the Toray tournament, she'll be up against the likes of Davenport, Jennifer Capriati, Dokic and Venus Williams. Or, she should be. Dokic skipped the entire Australian loop of the tennis circuit because, according to one report, of potential tax problems; Capriati was unable to compete in the Australian Open; Davenport's been injured; and Venus spent most of the second half of 2003 out of action. Still, a Sugiyama-Venus matchup in Tokyo should drag in a few punters off the streets. Although Venus's ranking has slipped a bit, she's still the best or second-best tennis player in the world, along with her sister, Serena.

It was a fitting end to the 2005 Acura Classic as fan favorite Mary Pierce of France won this year’s singles title by defeating Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, 6-0, 6-3, in Sunday’s final.
The meeting between the two 30-year-old tour veterans began with Pierce dominating the match, winning the first set in 22 minutes. Sugiyama did not give up without a fight and nearly came back in the second set before Pierce won the title with an ace on her seventh championship point.
It was a fantastic week at the La Costa Resort and Spa for the sixth-seeded Pierce, who was playing at the Acura Classic for the ninth time in her career. Prior to this year, Pierce advanced to the quarterfinals here four times, the semifinals twice and the final once. But in each instance she was stopped short of the title.

DATE'S DESTINY Japan's Kimiko Date, ranked ninth in the world, was down a set and a break against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain in the final of the $450,000 Toshiba Tennis Classic.
The situation didn't look good for the fourth-seeded Date as she hung her head on the changeover.
As Sanchez Vicario served, she had three game points to hold and go up 2-0 in the second set.
Japan's Kimiko Date . Date had lost to the Spaniard in eight of nine meetings including the last eight in a row. Sanchez Vicario, the tournament's top seed, looked totally in control of the match.
However, something happened. Date suddenly found her form and rhythm. She broke serve and reeled off five consecutive games.
One of the keys to her win was unforced errors. Date had a total of 32 for the match, but only 5 in the third set.
Sanchez Vicario had 13 winners in the match, while Japan's top player smacked 15 winners in the third set alone.

MARTINA HINGIS: For myself, I play very good tennis right now, since a couple of last weeks, since I won my first tournament in Filderstadt and I also like to play indoors a lot. I have great results there. I'm playing very good tennis, yes. Q. Did you feel at all a little bad or sad since you ended her career, you were the last match for her? MARTINA HINGIS: It was my first and last game against Kimiko, so somehow it's exciting to go on the court and play her. But I was just concentrating for my match and the opponent doesn't matter, if you are on the court. Q. What happened when you thought you had when the umpire thought you had given the point. You waved your arm like that, and the umpire conceded the point? MARTINA HINGIS: It was yeah, I was leading, so it was but it was like very much in the court, so I just thought we played a point because it wasn't very important.
