Kimiko Date Kimiko Date is a natural lefthander, but plays tennis right handed. Japanese tradition is such that it expected to be right handed. She has a double hand, and if she stretched wide, she uses her left hand. Kimiko is a mega star in Japan and has her own company named KD. When she retired in 1996, she had a full time job in the company. Iva Majoli Right handed, Double hand backhand. Country Croatia Marital Status Single Height Weight Birthday Age She is currently 20 Best surface Clay Best shot Backhand Standard Rank Favourite Rank Kimiko Date has short flat groundstrokes which are suitable to surfaces such as grass and hard court. Her main strength is her incredible speed, as she is the fastest player in the game. She wins points by counterpunching the power of her opponent. She is a very fit player and is mentally strong. Her game is similar to Hingis as she plays with thought and the weakness of both is their soft serves. In 1996 Date added a more attacking part of her game which included going to the net and taking more risks. Her results against Graf prooved a good decision. At the end of 1996 Date announced her retirement at the age of 26. Date defeated Graf for the first time in her career 7-6 3-6 12-10, saving a match point. The win came in her home city in the Fed Cup competition. At Wimbledon, Date beat Martinez and Pierce to reach the Semi Finals. In a late match against Graf, Date had a slow start, trailing 2-6 0-2. Date found her best ever form winning 6 games in a row to take the set. She tactically out classed Graf, however, the play was suspended at 2-6 6-2. Date would dead set have won the match if it had continued into the English evening. As she had lost the 1st set of her five previous matches Graf took the 3rd set 6-3 the next day. At the Lipton Date played to the quarter finals losing a respectable 7-6 6-3 to Graf.

Marriage plans may explain Date Kimiko's shock decision to retire from world tennis
By Peter Cordingley I T WAS 1988, AND a 17-year-old Japanese schoolgirl was at Wimbledon to play in the junior tournament. The record book shows she sank early on with barely a bubble, but for that timid teenager, Date Kimiko, the journey across the globe wasn't wasted. "I saw the Center Court for the first time," she recalls with awe still in her voice. "I never expected to stand there some day." She has and nearly gloriously but there will be no more Wimbledons, or any other international tournaments, for Date. Asia's top woman player has announced her retirement from tennis, bringing to an unexpected close a career that at times seemed to promise the very best, but, in the end, never quite delivered on the big occasions. But there was no sign of regret as Date explained her decision to the Tokyo press Sept. 24, just four days before her 26th birthday. "I always thought that 25 would be the age to turn a chapter in my life," she said. "Besides, I have had a lot of injuries to my knees and ankles too many to continue playing at the top level." Standing up to the big hitters has also probably taken its toll. At 1.63 m and weighing only 53 kg, Date is almost diminutive compared with some of the women pros on the tour. Monica Seles, for instance, is 1.79 m and 65 kg, and Steffi Graf 1.75 m and 59 kg. "I am not particularly powerful and I have been fighting at the limits of my mental and physical powers," the Japanese said.

"MR. YEN" HOLDS FIRM It is hard to ease any top Japanese official out of his job, so the task facing Sakakibara Eisuke's critics was positively herculean. Sakakibara, 55, is head of the international finance bureau in the virtually omnipotent Ministry of Finance. It was he who skillfully engineered the gentle weakening of the yen last year. But at a private party hosted by a U.S. diplomat some months ago, the outspoken Sakakibara described senior local politicians as "idiots." Coming amid an outcry against what the public viewed were arrogant bureaucrats, the affair led to calls for his head. The word was that he would be gone once the G-7 summit was over. That was two weeks ago, and Ministry personnel have let it be known that Sakakibara is staying put. After all, they are no idiots. COURT PRINCESS Japanese tennis ace Date Kimiko, 25, has become the first Asian woman to progress to Wimbledon's final four. Date lost the opening set of her semi-final against Steffi Graf, but outplayed the German champion in the second. The match was suspended due to failing light, breaking Date's momentum, and Graf was her usual efficient self the next day. Still, Date's performance enabled her to break into the world top ten and to carry Asian tennis on to center court with her.

IN October last year, former professional tennis player Date Kimiko brought her popular children's tennis classes overseas for the first time, visiting schoolchildren in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Date has been holding her "Come on Kids Tennis" classes in Japan since she retired from the professional circuit in 1996 after a career that saw her rise as high as fourth in the world rankings. Her goal is to acquaint as many people as possible with the sportin particular those for whom tennis would normally be inaccessible.
The "Kids Tennis" class in Vietnam was a Japan-Vietnam exchange project held under the auspices of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In Hanoi, approximately 60 local primary school kids and Japanese youngsters attended the class, and in Ho Chi Minh City about 40 Vietnamese children participated.

  • Unsubscribing from Tennis Server INTERACTIVE. "Adios and Sayonara" This year, tennis pros Gabriela Sabatini and Kimiko Date both turned 26. Next week, at the Chase Championships of the WTA Tour in New York City, Date will play her final pro event, while Sabatini will be honored there in what organizers are calling "a salute to her outstanding career." Why retirement? Sabatini, winner of the 1990 U.S. Open and nearly 30 other WTA events, blamed a lack of motivation and interest, suggesting that she had grown weary from the endless pursuit of silver and crystal trophies. Date, who finished 1995 ranked No. 4 in the world, blamed her various ailments and a proposed change in the WTA rankings system which she believes would make it more difficult for her to maintain a top ten ranking. On the surface, the two women would appear to have little in common. Sabatini, a sculptured and statuesque Argentinean, had topspin strokes as smooth and fluid as any woman who ever played the game. Date, a compact and cute Japanese woman, was a natural lefty forced to play right-handed to conform to what was believed to be normal tennis-playing standards. She even hit the ball flat, as opposed to the topspin strokes of today's game, because that's how the tennis pros did it in her outdated instruction books.
