The Chang Family Scholarship
On November 10, 1996, the "Franklin Templeton Chang Challenge," a benefit exhibition between Michael Chang, the world's number two-ranked tennis player and John McEnroe, one of the sport's all-time greats, was held indoors at Cal's Harmon Gym with proceeds going to the Chang Family Scholarship. The event was a rematch of the inaugural 1994 event which funded 25 percent of the men's tennis scholarship endowment in the Chang family's name. Thanks to the active involvement of Franklin Templeton, Chang's sponsors, Prince and Reebok, several thousand Bear Backers filling Harmon Gym and a live national TV broadcast on Prime Sports, the 1996 "Franklin Templeton Chang Challenge" was one of the biggest events ever to hit Cal's athletic program generating an additional $130,000 in contributions to the endowment. Intelligence has been the cornerstone of Chang's success. Yet even if the pursuit of knowledge has brought Chang to the summit of professional tennis, equally important to the Chang family is their commitment to education.

Michael Chang reflects on crowning moment
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday May 22, 1999 04:15 PM Michael Chang hopes to break out of his funk at the scene of his greatest triumph. Clive Brunskill/Allsport By John Donovan, CNN/SI ATLANTA It was just a flick of the wrist, really. An act of desperation. To some, it was utter impudence. Now, 10 years and a whole lot of tennis later, that simple shot, during the final agonizing minutes of a stunning fourth-round match in the 1989 French Open, lives as one of the most amazing single shots in tennis history. It may seem hard to fathom, but it has been a full decade now since Michael Chang, then a 130-pound 17-year-old upstart, put together a run of guile and guts on the tricky clay courts of Roland Garros to become the first American man in 34 years to win the French Open. Chang's victory over No. 1 Ivan Lendl in the '89 French Open Round of 16 was a five-set, four-hour, 37-minute labor filled with pain and suspense. His win over Stefan Edberg in the final, in another grueling five-setter, made him the youngest French Open champ and the youngest winner ever of a Grand Slam event.

Venus Envy
Martina Hingis and Patrick Rafter reigned at the U.S. Open, but the play of Venus Williams was the bigger story, much to her peers' dismay
by S.L. Price Issue date: September 15, 1997 They tried. Give every straw-hatted, bejeweled and earnest tennis official credit for that. They tried so hard to present a new U.S. Open, a kinder U.S. Open, a U.S. Open you could put your arms around and hug at Flushing Meadow. No more stink of garbage, no more smoke drifting in over the courts. No more long, tense walks for the players from locker room to center court. There was a sanitized stadium with walls so thick you could barely hear the subway cars rattling next door, and it was named for Arthur Ashe to help jump-start a new, multicultural era of American tennis. How was the U.S. Tennis Association to know that it takes far more than that to drain the brash, divisive, gritty New York soul from a New York event? Who could have predicted that after two weeks of superb tennis and the anointing of two young stars, you'd feel about as comfy hugging the 1997 U.S. Open as you would a petulant, tennis-bashing New York City mayor?
For the first time, Williams's tennis was as dazzling as her do.

Description
Often characterized as David facing Goliath on the tennis court, at 5’9” and 150 pounds Michael Chang is used to playing with the big hitters. What he lacks in stature, he makes up for in determination. A serious contender at any Grand Slam event, his bold statement of faith in God makes him a role model we can all look up to. “What’s nice,” Michael says, “is that, as long as my priorities are straight, I’m able to go out with the mentality to really leave the winning and losing up to the Lord.”

MICHAEL CHANG or CHRISTIANS REVISITED      (This essay was written somewhere in the mid 90’s, most likely 1994 or 1995. I put it up on my web site just 2 weeks after the Democratic disaster of 2004. In reading it again, its relevance in George W. Bush’s America jumped out at me. The reader will soon understand why it is listed in the “politics” and not the “sports” category.)       Another year has gone by and I again write this dubious philosophical patter from my retreat in the Spanish Mediterranean (see essay “ Europe ”). My annual stay here always coincides with the world’s most prestigious clay court tennis tournament, the French Open at Roland Garros. I am both an avid player and fan of this poetic sport. In fact, I am a proud member of the local “Club de Tenis de San Francisco ”, which distinguishes itself by having the two worst tennis courts in the world. If you can play here, you can play anywhere. ($40 annual fee)

Michael Chang's smoky image abroad
by Bill Wong Over the past 10 years, Michael Chang has been the rarest of species: a Chinese American athlete of world renown, consistently ranked among the top 10 men's tennis professionals. His profile in the United States, while considerable, pales in comparison to his fame in Hong Kong, whose population is overwhelmingly ethnic Chinese. You don't have to show your ethnic card to admire Chang, at least in many aspects of his public persona. He is a fierce and courageous competitor. Although relatively undersized compared with other tennis professionals, he maximizes his skills. Off the court, he's an exemplar, modest, humble, not force-feeding his devout Christianity. He is enough of a crossover commodity that he endorses a number of products to a mainstream American audience. In Hong Kong, he is said to contribute handsomely to charities that benefit young people and he has been used to promote healthful living as well as in anti-youth-suicide campaigns. So why are Serena Chen and Dr. Judith Mackay giving Chang such a bad time?
