Michael Chang Michael Chang charged onto the international tennis scene and shocked the world by upsetting Ivan Lendl and Stefan Egberg and becoming the youngest player in history to win a Grand Slam event. After that French Open win, he publicly thanked his savior, Jesus Christ. "Without Him, I'm nothing," he said. Boos and cheers followed. Criticism flowed freely. Veteran players and observers of the professional tennis tour laughed in anticipation of when Chang would fall.
None of it troubled Chang, who continues to stay focused on Christ and among the top tennis players in the world. Says Chang of his regular public praise of Christ: "I've just received so much joy, so much love, and so many blessings from the Lord. When something good happens to you, you want to share it with people!"
At just 5-feet-9, 150 pounds, the 1992 Olympian is small for his success. He says his keys to victory are intense physical and spiritual workouts. The spiritual is as important to tennis as the physical, and it is more important in life overall.
"I do a Bible study first thing in the morning and also at night," Chang says. "Throughout the day, I'll pray — whenever — because the Lord is always there. He teaches me a lot through circumstances in my life, whether it's a tennis match or other things that are going on. Trying to stay close to the Lord can be very difficult by yourself, so you ask the Lord to help you. You ask Him to be your first love and your first priority. Life will have its ups and downs, but regardless of what's happening in our lives, if we're focusing on Him, we'll have the joy that He gives us."

Talk Tennis Pro Player Talk General Pro Player Discussion PDA View Full Version : John McEnroe vs. Michael Chang: Battle of the Books David I. 02-19-2004, 01:18 AM Both Mac and Chang released autobiographies last year. So how do they stack up? Mac weighs in at twice the size of Chang but in my opinon they both have the same amount of readable pages. Mac, with his huge ego seems to have written most of his book himself and the result is a poorly written book with plenty of drivel, badly organized and hard to find the juicy good stuff. Chang's is well written, well organized with his religious chapters clearly labeled so you can easily avoid them.
They both have interesting accounts of thier early days coming up the ranks and Chang's opening chapter about winning the French Open at 17 is riveting. Mac reveals the dirt on life on the tour and his candid self-centered approach is refreshing in the beginning, then gets tiresome. In the end its a draw - 3 out of 5 stars. Michael Chang Crashes Out in Tennis
American Chinese Michael Chang, who has been in flagging form recently, was crashed out of the Sydney Olympics when he lost to an unknown rival on Wednesday.
Canada
's Sebastien Lareau, ranked 125 in the world and only playing here on a wildcard, beat the American 16th-seed 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes.
Chang displayed all his fighting qualities to come back from 5-1 down to force the first set into a tiebreak but he was unable to sustain the momentum. The defeat completes a dismal two days for the American men at the Olympics. Todd Martin and Vince Spadea both went out on Tuesday and Jeff Tarango is the only US player to have made the second round. Meanwhile, Britain's number one player Tim Henman got his dream of an Olympic singles medal shattered by Karol Kucera of Slovakia Wednesday. Kucera, a former top ten player who is emerging from a slump triggered by an injury last year, was in superb form from the baseline as he beat the British seventh seed 6-3, 6-2 to move into the second round.

Chang Enters Second Round in Atlanta Tennis
Fourth seed Michael Chang of the United States edged Italian Davide Sanguinetti 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the ATP tour tennis tournament in Atlanta on Monday night.
Chang, the Atlanta champion in 1994 and 1995, never lost his serve. He squandered two set points against Sanguinetti's serve in the first set but won every break point thereafter. Chang is seeking to regain the form that led him to close the 1992 through 1997 seasons with rankings that ranged from No. 2 to No. 8.
Last year ended with Chang ranked No. 50. Chang said he is working on his footwork and movement to regain the superior court coverage. In the only other match featuring a seeded player on Monday, eighth seed Andrew Ilie of Australia defeated Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-2. 52. Michael Chang, Een Bekende Amerikaanse Tennisspeler, Beantwoordt Vragen Over Gel
michael chang, een bekende tennisspeler, vertelt hoe hij tot geloof kwam Ik weet dat God mij deze geweldige gave gegeven heeft om goed tennis te spelen.
http://www.solcon.nl/langeveld/keerpunt/c/chang-michael-tennis.htm

No. 3 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain and No. 7 seed Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco both advanced to the second round of the TD Waterhouse Cup in Long Island, but only after coming from behind to survive three-set battles on the opening day of play. Robredo, who stands in the No. 12 position of the ATP Champions Race, managed to fend off the often-dangerous Jose Acasuso of Argentina 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, while El Aynaoui rallied from a set down to defeat Spanish qualifier Fernando Verdasco 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-0. El Aynaoui now meets another qualifier, Rik De Voest of South Africa, who toppled sentimental favorite Michael Chang 6-2, 6-3. Despite playing the former Roland Garros champion, De Voest shook off his nerves to dominate the 31-year-old veteran, who plans to retire after the US Open. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Younes El Aynaoui:
On being taken to tie-break in the first set:
“He is a very talented, strong player. The players in this year’s qualifying draw are quality players, and they’re playing at a very high level."
