Tennis Career
Chang first came to the tennis world's attention as a brilliant junior player who set numerous "youngest-ever" records. He won his first national title, the USTA Junior Hard Court singles, at the age of 12. At age 13, he won the the Fiesta Bowl 16s.

ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES Michael Chang: Time to Retire from Tennis?
(Updated Monday, Apr 14, 2003, 10:30:41 PM) hirteen years ago Michael Chang was lionized as the youngest man ever to win the French Open and the first American male to win in 36 years. This year he quietly exited Roland Garros after blowing a two-set-to-love lead in a first-round match with an obscure Frenchman ranked 224th.
Played Out?
Chang himself has ceased being a marquee name except in cities like Hong Kong, Beijing and Taipei. His ATP ranking has slipped to 116th from 73rd at the end of 2001. For the first five months of 2002 his prize money totaled a paltry $53,835 compared with $483,000 in 2000, $1.2 million in 1997 and a high of $2 million in 1995. Michael Chang now spends half his time competing in Challenger series tournaments offering piddling purses. His most recent win was $7,200 at an April tournament in Calabasas and that was one of his biggest wins of the year. Another Challenger event in Tarzana a week later netted him $520.
Not that Chang needs the prize money to keep himself in tennis balls. His winnings since turning pro at the age of 15 total $18.9 million. And that's not counting an estimated $50 million in endorsements.

listen send page They said I was too small, that I didn't have the strength, that I wouldn't cut it. I'll admit it's been tough - really tough. Sometimes I still feel I just don't have the height or strength to go out and compete against the bigger guys.
But I found it takes a lot more than physical size or strength to make it in life - both on and off the court. That's where I found having a relationship with God makes all the difference.
At 15 years of age, I was doing a lot of searching. I think at this particular age, kids are wondering about the meaning of life and are really trying to find themselves. I definitely had a lot of questions.
I became a Christian in 1988. My grandparents had given me a Bible that they asked me to read every day. On one particular evening when I didn’t have anything else to do, I decided to take a good look at it and see what it had to say. I found the Bible to be true and pure, expressing incredible love and peace through the life of Jesus Christ. Through my reading, I eventually accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.
When I won the 1989 French Open—my first Grand Slam title—I was only 17. This came much earlier than my family and I ever dreamed. I never expected it, and I don’t think anyone else in the tennis world expected it either. But the Lord has His way of working things out.

An interview with: MICHAEL CHANG Q. You were really pumped in the tiebreaker in the second set. When you didn't get that, was there an emotional letdown a little bit? MICHAEL CHANG: Yeah, a little bit. You know, you're serving for the match, then you get a matchpoint, it's a little bit discouraging. Then just for some reason, the old energy level kind of went down. Hicham picked up his game a little bit, and the third set went pretty quick. I think I got a little bit nervous serving for it at 6?5. I threw in a couple doubles. That really didn't help my cause too much. Q. How much would it have meant to you to be able to win one, two matches here, your last tournament here?

Hi Michael! Can you describe how the rigor of the game and how playing styles have changed with the emergence of the "New Balls Please" generation? -Jane Voigt
Chang: As opposed to the old balls. Well I think that definitely the depth of men's tennis is very great right now. A lot of young talented players are making their mark. I have been pretty privileged to play through a lot of generations the McEnroe, Connors, Lendl generation, the Becker generation the Agassi, Sampras, Courier generation and the Hewitt, Kuerten, Safin generation. It's been a heck of a lot of fun. Things have changed, not drastically, but in certain ways.

HISTORY
ATP Tour World Championships For 10 years, the final highlight of the ATP season was the ATP Tour World Championship. From 1990 to 1995, it was played in Frankfurt, Germany, before moving to Hannover in 1996. The inaugural tournament was won by Andre Agassi, who defeated world No. 1 and 1989 Masters champion Stefan Edberg. Pete Sampras, who was to dominate the event throughout the '90s collecting five out of ten titles, captured his first title in 1991 - his second big win after his surprise triumph at the 1990 U.S. Open. On his way to the title he defeated Wimbledon champion Michael Stich, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and Jim Courier in the final.
Jim Courier had no luck in the finals. One year after losing to Sampras, he was defeated by local hero Boris Becker who secured his second year-end title. Home domination continued in 1993, when Michael Stich marched through the tournament without losing a match - making him the only undefeated champion in the 1990s.
Pete Sampras was back to claim his second title in 1994 with a win over Becker; in 1995, Michael Chang managed to survive the round robin stage for the first time and eliminated Sampras to reach the final, where Boris Becker proved too strong for him. The German won the last title in Frankfurt.

Michael Chang building on faith, 15 years after French Open fame By JANNY HU
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER How do you craft a tennis player? You teach him patience. How do you teach him patience? You make him fish. Michael Chang was casting lines before he ever swung a tennis racket. He was 4 years old, growing up in Minnesota, when his family began their fishing excursions. He remembers the outings as a lesson in fortitude, sometimes painful. "I went ice fishing once," he said, "and my ear got frostbitten." Chang is sitting in a coffee shop near his Mercer Island home, his athletic legs covered in tan slacks, his arms concealed under a loose-fitting sweater. It's his eyes, big and brown, that cannot hide, and they reveal what his body does not. Retirement has relaxed the muscles, made sharper the soul.

He had been on the Tour for little more than a year when, at age 17, he stunned the tennis world by upsetting all-time greats like Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg on the way to his first Grand Slam titlethe 1989 French Open. His name was entered into the history books as the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam event! Now, in his 10 years as a pro, he has reached the finals of three of the four Grand Slams (the Australian, the French, and the U.S. Open). He has captured over 30 tournament titles, earning more than $14 million in prize money. For seven years, he's been ranked as one of the top ten players in the world. On the tennis circuit his persistence and determination are nearly legendary. As Edberg has said, "Chang never gives up." Referring to his intensity and his amazing ability to get to "impossible" shots, one sportwriter called Michael "the most exciting player since Jimmy Connors." Another concluded, "Jim Courier speaks for all the pros when he says, 'You have to play your best tennis to beat him.'" One of the world's best players, Chang is committed to going out and giving his best every time he steps onto the court. And off the court, he goes out of his way to reach out to his fans and have a positive impact on their lives. He makes time to sign autographs and answers their questions; he participates in a variety of special charities, tennis clinics, and youth-oriented programs. He talks to children, reminding them to work hard in school.

Michael Chang:
The best parents are "selfless," says the tennis star. "My parents gave everything to us."
This week: Chang plays in the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Orlando, Fla., defending his No. 1 seed. ichael Chang is best known for wielding a mean tennis racket, but the superstar often puts it down for a fishing rod and time with his family. This day, Chang relaxes at a tiny fishing lake in Orange, Calif., with his brother, Carl. They are inseparable. "When we were growing up, family was everything," Michael, 26, explains as Carl, 30, casts a line. For a long time, his father, a chemist, fiercely managed Michael's career. In 1991, Carl took over. At first, as Michael sank in the rankings, some dismissed Carl as just a "chaperon." But the brothers, devout Christians, prayed together and stuck together. Now No. 10 in the world, Michael earned $12 million in 1997.
