The interview was held at the Gerry Weber Sportpark Hotel. Bhupathi (30) has already won 37 ATP tournaments and claimed the Grand Slam titles at Paris, Wimbledon and at the US Open. Excerpts from the interview: Chris: Mahesh, you're back again in Halle to participate in the Gerry Weber Open 2005 tournament. Which memories do you have, while looking back to the past tournament and what's so special about this tournament? Mahesh Bhupathi: The tournament is a good preparation for Wimbledon, because we have a lot of practise courts and two courts under the roof. A lot of players like to come here, because rain or not we will get to play a lot on grass. I think the tournament is great, because they look after the players really well, there are great facilities and it's very convenient, that our hotel is next to the tennis court. It's definitely one of the better tournaments we have in Europe. Chris: You've paired up with Australia's Todd Woodbridge to compete in the doubles competition and you played together at the French Open, while using this tournament as a preparation for Wimbledon. What are your expectations for Wimbledon?

    A special, winning partnership
The success and strength of the Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi team, the greatest Indian doubles pair, springs from their belief in each other. NARESH KUMAR IT was a historic occasion for Indian tennis when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men's doubles title at the French Open championships. The four Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - are ack nowledged as summits of the tennis world and winning a title in any one of them brings international acclaim and recognition. Paes' and Bhupathi's feat - they are the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam title - is a matter of great pride and joy. So often in the past year have Paes and Bhupathi failed narrowly to win a Grand Slam doubles title that one was beginning to despair and wonder if they would ever pull it off. In 1998, which was a big year for them, they were in the semi-finals of three Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open - and won a record eight events on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. This year, at the Australian Open, they were a step closer to the summit but fell at th e last hurdle, losing narrowly to the strong combination of Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. During the ATP tournament in Chennai in April, there was talk of a possible split between Paes and Bhupathi. Happily the boys stayed together, won the title in Chennai and have now won their first Grand Slam men's doubles title.

Bhupathi-Mirnyi pair triumphs NEW YORK SEPT.6 India's Mahesh Bhupathi teamed up with Max Mirnyi of Belarus to win the U.S. Open men's doubles title on Friday. The third-seeded pair of Bhupathi and Mirnyi defeated the Czech pair of Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Earlier, the second-seeded Lisa Raymond and Mike Bryan of the United States defeated top-seeded Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia and Bob Bryan of the U.S. 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-1) to win the mixed doubles title. On Thursday, smacking aces at over 209 kph (130 mph), covering every inch of the net, Pete Sampras looked like the younger man and dominated an apparently awe-struck Roddick 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the U.S. Open semifinals. And it took all of 90 minutes. As the 31-year-old Sampras pumped his fist to celebrate a volley winner that closed the second set, fellow American Roddick, 20, flashed an admiring thumbs up and then bowed, acknowledging that his idol still has what it takes.
