Another Day, Another Upset as No. 4 Doubles Ousted By Spaniards by Ranon Masliyah
Monday, September 6, 2004
In yet another upset in men's doubles, the No. 4-seeded team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi was soundly defeated Monday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo in the third round. Of the top five doubles teams in the field of 64, only two remain, including the No. 3 tandem of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor and the No. 5 squad of Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro. The top-ranked duo of Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge, which won the Open doubles title in 2003, lost to No. 13 Leander Paes and David Riki on Sunday. Nadal and Robredo made the most of their chances, tightly controlling their service opportunities and only being broken once the entire match. Conversely, Bhupathi, of India, and Mirnyi, of Belarus, were broken three times. One of the most important breaks came at 3-3 in the second set when Nadal and Robredo commandeered the net. With a 5-3 lead and itching to close the match, Mirnyi, who won a doubles title with Bhupathi at the Open in 2002, held serve with a 100 mph-plus ace. The effort to overturn the 5-4 deficit proved futile, though, as Nadal ensured his first-ever quarterfinals doubles appearance by firing an unreturnable serve past Bhupathi at match point. His partner Robredo, who was knocked out in the first round of doubles play at Flushing Meadows last year, also matched his deepest doubles foray.

Bhupathi to establish Tennis Academy in Mumbai
Sunday, July 17 2005 14:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time
Bangalore: It appears India's tennis doubles star Mahesh Bhupathi is graduating to a new level, he is rolling out a tennis academy.
He has proposed to set the ball rolling in September by opening two Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy (MBTA) centres in Mumbai and one in Dehradun slated to commence on October 1, 2005.
And then, three more are in the pipeline one each in Hyderabad, Bangalore and probably in Salem, MBTA's Director (Operations) Sunil Yajaman told sources in Bangalore.
The initial phase would see MBTA tying up with existing tennis courts in these places to impart quality training.
Mahesh, fresh from his title win in the Wimbledon mixed doubles partnering France's Mary Pierce, is for sure to be the driving force behind the venture. He has left for Germany to play in the Stuttgart Open along with his new doubles partner Martin Damm of Czech Republic.
Yajaman, Honorary Director of All India Tennis Association's Coaches Education Programme, said MBTA would initially have a pool of 15 coaches ranging from assistant level to head level.

Indian Tennis Stars Leander Paes- Mahesh Bhupathi Go Down To Kiefer-Shuettler By Sanjay Sharma , Section Tennis
Posted on Thu Aug 19th, 2004 at 04:33:19 PM EST India's only hope of an Olympic gold, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, today suffered a shock defeat in the men's doubles tennis semifinals. The multiple Grand Slam champions went down 2-6 3-6 to the unseeded German pair of Nicholas Kiefer and Rainer Shuettler in a one-sided contest that lasted just over an hour. Paes and Bhupathi, the former world number one pair who had won the French Open and Wimbledon titles in 1999, looked woefully out of touch today. It was Bhupathi's serve that came under pressure first in the sixth game of the first set as the Germans went ahead 4-2. It was the first service loss for the Indians in the competition and the tally doubled soon when Paes dropped the next game. The Atlanta Games bronze medallist began with a double fault and found himself in a tight situation. Kiefer and Shuettler pounced on the opportunity to close the set in 34 minutes. The Indians went down 2-4 in the second set after Bhupathi lost serve again and, however hard the pair tried, they could not stop the rivals' march into the final.

Leander Paes- Mahesh Bhupathi Up Against Famous Rivals In Athens By rajesh , Section Tennis
Posted on Thu Aug 12th, 2004 at 09:19:04 PM EST Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi received a huge boost to their Olympics medal hopes when they were drawn in a relatively easy bottom half in the tennis men's doubles event on Thursday. The Indian Express, who have been seeded fifth, open their campaign against the American pair of Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish and can expect another high profile showdown in the second round against Swiss star Roger Federer and Yves Allegro. Should seedings hold, the Indians' first tough test would come in the quarter-finals where they are likely to run into fourth-seeded Zimbabwean duo Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett on the way to a potential semifinal clash against second seeds Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge of Australia. The top half of the 32-size draw features the top seeds America's Bryan brothers Bob and Mike, Fabrice Santoro and Michael Llodra of France (3), Argentines Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez (6), Martin Damm and Cyril Suk of the Czech Republic (7).

Pierce and Bhupathi win the title in their first tournament together Mary Pierce and Mahesh Bhupathi captured the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Paul Hanley and Tatiana Perebiynis.
France's Pierce and Bhupathi of India were a scratch pairing but upset second seeds Wayne and Cara Black in a superb run to the final. In the title match, they were far too strong for their unseeded opponents. Pierce, a singles quarter-finalist, served out the victory, clinching it with a forehand down the middle. "I always knew we had a chance," said Bhupathi. "We've been playing some really high quality tennis so it would have taken a really great performance to beat us." Bhupathi said a "mutual friend" had introduced the pair before the tournament after the Indian was left without a partner in the mixed doubles.

Mahesh Bhupathi: I mean, obviously a Grand Slam is a Grand Slam. It's very special, you know. The more you can win, the better. This is the second time we're playing together. The first time we got a little unlucky at the French in the quarters. We basically have a lot of fun. We're just enjoying it now. How about you? Ai Sugiyama: It's great. This is my first Grand Slam title. I've been enjoying playing with Mahesh. I feel so good about it. You won with a Japanese partner twice. What is the secret? Is it coincidence? What's the luck?

Mahesh Bhupathi: Big shoes to fill
ROHIT BRIJNATH MAHESH BHUPATHI is a swell fellow, firm handshake, steady gaze, sharp sense of humour, sharper ear-stud, but when you accost him, it's hard to meet his eye. Only because mostly you're focussed on his shoes. From some angles you think, if you attach the necessary sail you could cross the Atlantic in them, or certainly use them to rock a baby to sleep. They're huge, they're gigantic, if he walked in the snow you'd call out the Yeti squad. VINO JOHN
Mahesh Bhupathi's serve is a finely-woven mix of muscle and mind. Hah, hah, Mahesh Bhupathi, would say. But, seriously, there's something funny about his feet. And it's not that they're size 14 1/2 US, which means he can't even get them in India. It's that despite their size, we've never really noticed his footprints (or in translation, never adequately recognised his ability) and that's because he's spent his life walking in someone else's footmarks. Leander Paes, to be exact. Paes has been lighter on his feet, and quicker too. Literally, and otherwise. He started at 16, won the Nationals, surged into the singles Top 100, has beaten Pete Sampras, played (and does) like a young Lochinvar in Davis Cup, and then seemingly dragged Bhupathi towards doubles greatness.

Outside the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem (North Carolina) on that Sunday evening, sipping Brazilian coffee from a huge paper cup, the old man grinned and offered his hand. "Great show," he said. "That Paes is a lovely player. This has been a great weekend here. After all that's happened in this country..." his breaking voice trailed off. Then, moments later, the old man said, "You know, my wife said the other day that it's ridiculous to go and watch a sports event when the country has been traumatised. But I think sport is the answer. I wish George Bush and Osama bin Laden sorted out their differences on a tennis court." Ah, what a dream! If only that could happen!
