PUTTING THE PROBLEMS ASIDE
Indonesia's Games hopefuls must stay focused
G IVEN THE TUMULT THAT has rocked Indonesia in recent weeks, selecting a team for the next Asian Games may seem to have about the same official priority as watering the plants in the public parks. But, come December, when the Indonesians will no doubt be present in Bangkok, a squad will have to be ready and fully trained. So those hoping for a place know they must put the nation's tribulations aside and get on with their own program. Nobody will be more focused than Yayuk Basuki. The world No. 24 tennis player is having a busy year and is building up for her favorite tournament, Wimbledon, where the grass surface favors her all-action game. She is hoping to go better than last year, when she got through to the quarter finals. But it is going to be tough for the Jokjakarta policeman's daughter, who has only just returned to full strength after developing back problems in 1997. Basuki, 27, had a miserable time in the French Open in May, where the clinging clay of Roland Garros takes the pace off the ball and works against her fondness for rushing the net. The Indonesian lasted just one hour and six minutes into the tournament, going down 3-6, 2-6 to Spain's Gala Leon Garcia in the opening round. In the women's doubles, she and regular partner Caroline Vis of the Netherlands made it through to the third round. But that's where they ran into 14th-seeded Barbara Schett (Austria) and Patty Schnyder (Switzerland) and exited 1-6, 4-6.

Add your thoughts/messages in the Forum page .. or use the archived guestbook Apr 16 Note-1 LP-MB play their first round match against Landsberg-vanHoudt today (Monday) evening at the Monte Carlo Masters .. It will be starting soon, as I type, by about 5.15 pm there (8.15 am Los Angeles .. 8.45 pm India) .. We will be following the match online in our chatroom Apr 15 Note-2 India did win the final tie in the Fed Cup upsetting the second seeds Korea, according to Monday's The Hindu .. It didn't mean much other than in the standings with Indonesia topping the pool and then winning the final to advance from the 10 team group one competition - but it is still a creditable win .. India bt Korea 2-1: (Manisha Malhotra l. Yang- Jin Chung (#405), 26 64 26 .. Nirupama Vaidyanathan d. Kyung Yee Chae (#296), 64 76(3) .. Manisha/ Nirupama d. Chae/ Chung 64 62) .. Actually this was a good trip, but for the fact that Indonesia was just way too strong and that we dropped a close one to New Zeakand in the second tie .. Some details from The Hindu who talked to Captain Piperno and players Rushmi and Sai on their return today to delhi .. It appears that Manisha came down with some back problems in her three-set singles loss and the last-minute change to the doubles pair caused further problems for us .. As for the 3rd tie, against Indonesia, well, Wynne Prakusya got over Nirupama this time, though Niru had upset her about 2 or 3 times in the past when she was higher ranked than Niru .. With top-75 player (and former top-10 player) Yayuk Basuki playing the doubles also, Indonesia was going to be an uphill battle all the way, as expected ..

The singles draw at the $320K Orlando Disney US Claycourt championships is out .. Leander plays qualifier Xavier Malisse (BEL,148) in the first round .. Here is the bottom half of the draw I would have preferred many of the others players in the main draw over a qualifier like the young and talented Xavier Malisse .. I believe the match will be on Tuesday, based on a schedule for Monday that just came up at the Orlando Sentinel newspaper site. Leander may have reached Orlando after his title today at Bermuda, across the sea .. I have not been in touch with LP or MB for a few days to know if they will be playing together at Orlando .. Leander's partner at Bermuda, Jan Siemerink (with whom he had a shared-title at Hertogenbosch after an abandoned doubles final as well), is also at Orlando.

She won her doubles match with Mariaan De Swardt over 13th-seeded Kim Po and Anne-Gaelle Sidot; then she lost her mixed doubles match with Mahesh Bhupathi against Miriam Oremans and Jan Siemerink. It was good stuff, and the fans packed tightly like commuters on the Tube to get one last look at the legend. Yet Navratilova wasn't the only female player who acquitted herself well in a comeback. Yayuk Basuki was a solid, top-30 player for much of the '90s before she decided to drop off the circuit to give birth to a son

Is Capriati Good Jen or Bad Jen? Posted: Monday August 26, 2002 12:06 PM
Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim will answer your tennis questions every Monday. Click here to send a question. With the U.S. Open under way, we go straight to the questions this week. Check back each evening for daily reports from Flushing Meadows. While I've got you, can we cut through all the now consistent innuendo (not just in the Mailbag but in nearly every news report) and ask: What is the deal with Jennifer Capriati? Is she just petulant and we never knew it, or is there something that is particularly bothering her at the moment? I love watching her play and love her comeback story even more, but her cursing and arguing (mostly wrongly) line calls every week is beginning to turn me off. She seems caring and lovely sometimes, and then a cranky, moody mess. On balance, is she a good witch or a bad witch?
What's up with the Capster? It's a good question that many within and without the tour are asking. Capriati is a charter member of the sports world's All-Comeback Team and, by all rights, should be thrilled with where she stands and how she redirected her career. She got a second chance, made the most of it and should be smiling from now until eternity. Instead, she has the angst-ridden disposition of someone auditioning for a role in

    Unseeded players reaching finals
Is Pete Sampras' dash to the top of the pile of Grand Slam winners beginning to slow? A look at the recent history in tennis' big four events suggests at least that its not getting any easier. Sampras has 10 Grand Slam singles titles - leaving him just two behind Australian Roy Emerson's record of 12. The No. 1-ranked American was expected to add an 11th to his list here, but his elimination means a new name will be added to the list of major winners. In fact, this Australian Open is the fifth consecutive Grand Slam in which there will be an unseeded finalist. Spain's Carlos Moya made last year's Australian final, Gustavo Kuerten took the French Open crown, Cedric Pioline lost to Sampras at Wimbledon and both Pat Rafter and Greg Rusedski contested the U.S. Open. Martina's quiet mom
While Martina Hingis calmly and quietly destroys her opponents on court, her mother Melanie Molitor is just as reliable, sitting in the stands with a permanent pained look on her face. As Hingis conquered Mary Pierce in straight sets Wednesday, Molitor's face was an aberration. The daughter was all control, the mother could barely keep control. ''I guess it was a little bit shocking for her that I played so well and I won everything so easily today,'' Hingis said. Being a teen-ager, Hingis is sometimes a little embarrassed by her doting mom. ''You have to do your own job out there on court, and sometimes I have to say, 'Couldn't you be a little quiet because everyone can hear it.''' Hingis said she was able to take the pressure off her mother for at least one match. ''Well, she was relaxed against Basuki, I think,'' Hingis said. Hingis beat Indonesian Yayuk Basuki 6-0, 6-0 in 38 minutes in the fourth round.

U.S. Leads Belgium 2-0, Russia-France at 1-1 in Fed Cup Semis
    Posted on November 21, 2003
Meghann Shaughnessy struggled mightily against 17-year-old world junior No. 1 Kirsten Flipkens Wednesday in her first match of the Fed Cup semis, but eventually subdued the Belgian upstart 6-7(4), 7-6(8), 9-7 to give the U.S. a commanding 2-0 lead. The win followed a successful opening for the U.S. when Lisa Raymond easily saw off Els Callens 6-2, 6-1 in 50 minutes.
"I don't think I could have asked more of myself or I could have played any better," Raymond said. "It's been a great week so far and I think we came here to win this cup."
Flipkens was competing with a hip injury in her first Fed Cup match, but playing without fear in winning the first set and dictating points before the wiry Shaughnessy edged the second set in a breaker and the third 9-7. The Belgian served for the match at 5-4 in the third but could not close the door.
Today the U.S. will have three chances to gain the clinching point, beginning with Raymond vs. Flipkens, then Shaughnessy vs. Callens, then the doubles with Navratilova/Raymond vs. E.Clijsters/Maes.

    OBJECTIVE
The primary objective of the Yayasan is to provide high quality training for young Indonesian players and help them in attaining to their maximum potential in the game of tennis. This would mean building a long-term plan to guide future champions in a positive and well-mannered attitude both on and off the tennis court. The selected players must not only show talent in their tennis game but also must attain the proper "class and etiquette" that the game has been missing for a long time. The Yayasan’s players will be the "true" ladies and gentlemen of tennis in Indonesia.

Getting to Know Rising Stars Feliciano Lopez and Angelique Widjaja
    by Ed Toombs
    March 2003

Can we call them the Splendid Sixty-Threes? By the sheerest concidence, two of the most talked-about newcomers in pro tennis, Angelique Widjaja and Feliciano Lopez, were both ranked 63rd by their respective tours entering the 2003 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California. We though we would take advantage of On the Line ’s presence at the event as a chance to get to know these rising stars. They are both young, good-looking, charismatic and talented, and figure to be among the leading lights of professional tennis for years to come. Ladies first! Angelique Widjaja is a young woman who makes an instant impression. In 2001, as a 16-year-old wild card at the Bali tournament in her home country of Indonesia, Widjaja played her first WTA tournament. Known as an excellent junior player but with a humble pro ranking of 579, she won the tourney, thereby becoming only the sixth player in WTA history to win her début event. Now aged 18, the native of Bandung has since continued her fast progression in the sport, breaking into the top 100 last year and add ing a second title in Pattaya City, Thailand, in 2002. Widjaja is known as “Angie” in her homeland, where she is already a well-known personality, winning Indonesia‘s female athlete of the year award for 2002. This was her first trip to Indian Wells, and she performed admirably, reaching the third round. Along the way she defeated No. 13 Patty Schnyder, the highest-ranked victim of her career so far. We spoke to Angelique after her 7-5, 6-2 loss to Spain’s Magui Serna.

Fans lustily responded to his post-match bow, even after he lost to Spain's world number five Carlos Moya in Sunday's final. It was Paradorn's fourth straight final in Chennai, where tennis lovers treat him as their own. Though the world number 27 is some way from being considered a potential grand slam winner, his role as the flag-bearer of Asian tennis makes him a hero throughout the region. Paradorn, the first Asian to be ranked among the top 10 in the world when he was briefly placed ninth in 2003, feels it is his duty to be a mentor for emerging players from Asia. "There aren't too many Asian players on the tour," he said. "So we always hang out together, practise together and exchange and give advice on what you should do.
