Photo Gallery WTEF PROGRAMS Arthur Ashe Children’s Program The Arthur Ashe Children’s Program (AACP) serves approximately 550 at-risk children in grades three through eight at 23 schools (15 elementary and eight middle and junior high) in Wards 5, 6, 7 and 8. Children participate in after-school programming four days per week throughout the school year in a curriculum combining tennis, literacy and life-skills lessons. AACP capitalizes on a child’s enthusiasm for tennis in order to keep that child off the streets and engaged in productive and character-building activities. AACP participants not only develop tennis skills, but also improve academic performance and develop tools to make productive choices that enhance rather than endanger their lives. At the junior high school level, AACP participants also explore career options, attend educational planning workshops and participate in community service. When compared to their peers, AACP participants receive higher scores on measures of reading ability and self-esteem. In 2002, the AACP was named
