USTA to Name Tennis Facility for Arthur Ashe Reuters NewMedia, Inc. - Tuesday, February 18, 1997 09:26:00 PM NEW YORK (Reuter) The United States Tennis Association reportedly has reversed a previous decision and will name the new tennis facility being built for the U.S. Open in honor of Arthur Ashe. The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that the facility in Flushing, N.Y., will be named Arthur Ashe Stadium in honor of the former U.S. Open champion who died of AIDS in 1993. A USTA spokesperson would not confirm the report, but said a news conference has been scheduled for Wednesday. The USTA originally rejected the idea of naming the facility after Ashe, choosing instead to name it USTA Stadium and leaving open the possibility of selling the name to a corporate sponsor. However, the USTA Board of Directors reconvened last weekend in Atlanta to reconsider the decision. Ashe became the first African American man to win a Grand Slam title when he captured the U.S. Open in 1968. He later took the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975 and finished his career with 33 career titles.

Ashe Was Tennis' Magical Man Reaction: After his AIDS announcement, a stunned tennis world recalls the impact he had. Los Angeles Times - Thursday April 9, 1992
Thomas Bonk; Times Staff Writer When Roscoe Tanner walked onto the carpeted tennis court of the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1973 to play doubles, his first match as a professional, he took a quick look around. He saw Ken Rosewall, Fred Stolle and Arthur Ashe. Tanner was nervous, but he breathed a sigh of relief. "At least I knew the Big Guy was on my side," Tanner said. The Big Guy was Ashe who, despite a rather unimpressive frame that stretched to 6-1 and carried only 155 pounds, always seemed to command the sort of respect that tennis has glimpsed only on occasion. Tanner was struck once again Wednesday by the impact of Ashe when his former doubles partner revealed at a news conference in New York that he has AIDS. The announcement by Ashe, the 1968 U.S. Open, 1970 Australian Open and 1975 Wimbledon champion, shocked and saddened many of those who knew the 48-year-old tennis pioneer. "Gosh, I'm terribly, terribly distraught," said 1938 Grand Slam winner Don Budge. "It's a damn shame. It just makes you sick. There hasn't been a higher class guy in tennis."

Arthur Ashe He was a man who in many ways took the civil rights baton from Jackie Robinson and ran with it all the way home, carrying the cause until his death in 1993. By any account, Arthur Ashe was an athlete and activist, a consummate scholar and professional, who did much more than play the game of tennis at an exceptional level. Ashe took on life. He showed generations of Americans how it should be lived. He was a black athlete who excelled, but wanted the world to know that blacks should excel throughout society. "We deify black athletes," Ashe said in 1992. "Black families are eight times more likely to push youngsters into athletics than are white families. "The disparity is glaring, if you think of the black parents' involvement at a sporting event versus their participation in a PTA meeting. We need to turn that around." Ashe grew up in Richmond, Va., a skinny kid with dark-rimmed glasses and reflexes that astounded. One spring, he fought for Robinson's No. 42 when he signed up for a Little League team.

Even after death, Arthur Ashe topples another barrier
July 11, 1996
Web posted at: 1:20 a.m. EDT RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) The city that banned young Arthur Ashe from its whites-only tennis courts dedicated a monument to the late athlete Wednesday as statues of Confederate heroes looked on. The 12-foot bronze statue of the first black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open was unveiled on Monument Avenue before about 1,500 people, ending more than a year of bitter debate in the former capital of the Confederacy. Statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee and other Confederate leaders also line the roadway. "Arthur Ashe Jr. is a true Virginia hero, and he belongs here," said Johnnie Ashe, Arthur's brother. Former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first African-American to be elected to that state leadership post, said the street "is now an avenue for all people." (128k AIFF or WAV sound) Ashe was praised for his accomplishments as a tennis star as well as an activist for human rights and AIDS, the disease that killed him in 1993. Ashe contracted the virus that causes AIDS from a blood transfusion during heart surgery. Wednesday would have been his 53rd birthday. For many, the monument is sweet justice.

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (b. July 10, 1943, Richmond, Va.; d. February 6, 1993, New York, N.Y.), American tennis player, number one ranked player in the world in 1975, vocal critic of racial intolerance, historian of African American sports.
Ashe stressed importance of striving for excellence outside sports
Ashe was born July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, to Mattie and Arthur Robert Ashe Sr. He began playing tennis at the age of ten under the guidance of Dr. Robert Walter Johnson, a prominent coach of African American youth from Charlottesville, Virginia. Under Johnson, Ashe won three American Tennis Association (ATA) Boy's championships, becoming the first African American junior to be ranked by the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA). Between 1960 and 1963, Ashe won three ATA Men's Singles titles, became the first African American on the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team, and the first African American to win a USLTA national title in the South. His achievements earned him a full scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1966. While in college, Ashe won the U.S. intercollegiate singles championship, leading UCLA to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) team championship. After his career in tennis, Ashe became an eloquent spokesperson against racial intolerance. He was a critic of South Africa's racist system of apartheid and in the United States he created tennis programs to benefit

Search Tennis Arthur Ashe: Much More Than Tennis Imagine that we could travel back in time to the Richmond, Virginia of the early 1950s and meet the young Arthur Ashe, but know nothing of who he was. We would meet a skinny kid who loved books and music and who, due to segregation, was excluded from playing at any of the local tennis clubs and camps. It would have been hard to so much as imagine that he could become a US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon champion. Arthur Ashe needed extraordinary qualities to become a champion, and those qualities ended up giving us much more than memories of a great athlete. Arthur learned to play in the local public park. His father and a local coach, Ronald Charity, noticed his talent and arranged for him to work with Dr. Walter Johnson, who coached Althea Gibson, the first black player ever to win a Grand Slam title. Dr. Johnson gave Arthur a foundation that carried him through an outstanding high school tennis career that earned him a tennis scholarship at UCLA. He became UCLA's top player, which led to his selection in 1963 as the first ever black player to join the US Davis Cup team. In 1965, Arthur won the NCAA singles title and led UCLA to the team championship.

A Station that you must Stop for Sports Arthur Ashe Arthur Ashe once said that if he were remembered only as a tennis player, he would consider himself a failure. Ironically, had Ashe's life consisted only of his tennis career; he still would have transcended the white lines in the manner that became his barometer for success. As the first African-American Davis Cup participant and the first black male to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, Ashe was a stark and stoic symbol of the penetration of a lily-white sport. Ashe left his mark on the game viscerally, through his pioneering success, but also financially and philosophically, through his actions as a leader in the formation of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Had he done nothing more, he would own a spot among the 100 most important people in American sports history, but as it turned out, his accomplishments on the court paled beside his efforts to defeat social, political and medical injustice. His sporting legacy is as broad in scope as his convictions were deep. He was a racial symbol, inspiring a generation of blacks to take up a previously uninviting sport. He was a publicist of sorts, joining with the likes of Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors to fuel the tennis boom of the 1970s. He was an author; his history of the black athlete, A Hard Road to Glory, and his fifteen years of opinions in The Washington Post exhibiting a brilliant intellect. He was a practical and productive activist. He was a so-called crossover sports hero.
