Ashe’s powerful ground strokes and accurate serves produced singles victories in the United States and Australian Opens and at Wimbledon. He was an annual fixture on the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1963 through 1984, first as a player and then as a coach. Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia. At age ten he began to play tennis under the direction of Dr. Walter Johnson, who also taught the game to the 1957 Wimbledon women’s champion, Althea Gibson . Ashe went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1963 he became the first African American to play on the Davis Cup national tennis team. Two years later he won the U.S. intercollegiate singles championship, leading UCLA to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) team championship.

BellaOnline's Tennis Editor Arthur Ashe Remembered Arthur Ashe was a skinny little kid who learned tennis on the public courts in Richmond, VA during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Little did anyone know at the time that this African-American would turn the tennis world upside down in what was a mostly white sport for the rich and famous. As he did everything in his life, Ashe took on the world with grace and dignity.
Ashe graduated at the top of his high school class, earned a scholarship to UCLA where he won the NCAA individual and team titles. He was the first African-American man named to the U.S. Davis Cup team, and the first (and only) to reach world No. 1. He was president of the ATP, served as captain of the Davis Cup team, and has been inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame. Sadly, Ashe’s life was cut short when, in 1993 at the age of 49, he passed away from complications of AIDS.
With all that Ashe accomplished in his 10-year tennis career, he is also remembered for everything he did away from tennis off the court. In 1969, Ashe saw inequities in the prize money being offered, so he and several other players formed what is now known as the Association of Tennis Professionals. Later that year, he was denied a visa to play a tournament in South Africa because of his skin color, and he took a stand against apartheid. Prominent individuals and organizations, both in and out of tennis, stood behind him as he single handedly raised the world’s awareness of the oppressive form of government in South Africa.

He is well remembered for his efforts to further social causes. As a youngster, Ashe was small and not well-coordinated. But by the time he entered high school, he starred in tennis, basketball, and football. In tennis, he won the state championship, while in football, he helped lead his team to the city championship as a speedy wide receiver. BIOGRAPHY
A singular figure in the game's history as the only black male to win a major singles titlethree of them in factArthur Robert Ashe, Jr., also set a record in 1968 that is most unlikely to be equaled. He won both the U.S. Amateur and Open championships, the first time such a double was possible. No one has come remotely close since.
That first season of the open era was a whirlwind year for him, then 1st Lt. Ashe of the U.S. Army. In order to maintain Davis Cup eligibility and gain time away from duty for important tournaments, Ashe was required to maintain his amateur status. Determining that the traditional (and previously amateur) U.S. Singles Championships at Forest Hills would become the inaugural U.S. Open in 1968, the USTA designated Longwood Cricket Club in Boston as the site for a U.S. Amateur tournament. Seeded first in Boston, Ashe won the title by surging past teammate Bob Lutz in the exciting final, 4-6, 6-3, (8-10), 6-0, 6-4.
However, with pros introduced to Forest Hills, Ashe was a lightly regarded fifth seed. Nevertheless, at 25, he came of age as an internationalist. Unflappable over the New York fortnight, he served-and-volleyed splendidly. In the final he clocked 26 aces, returned with precision, and held his cool in a five-set final-round victory over pro Tom Okker, 14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Those Ashe touched carry on his work

Earlier this week, MaliVai Washington was walking through Dulles International Airport when he spotted a familiar face. It was Arthur Ashe, wearing a typically stoic countenance, looking out at him from an advertising billboard. Like the statue that stands outside Arthur Ashe Stadium, home of the U.S. Open, the tennis great remains a presence today's athletes won't forget. "Yes, it was him," Washington said from his northern Florida home. "Long after his death, Arthur is still relevant, he is still having a major impact on the international world. "It took a lot of guts. I can't imagine the pressure he was under, playing in South Africa or Wimbledon in 1975," he said. "Very few people have the personality and character and strength to want to do what he did." And what he wanted to do was to help people that couldn't always help themselves. Children were one of his most treasured causes. Two days before the U.S. Tennis Association holds its annual tournament in Flushing, N.Y., the organization celebrates "Arthur Ashe Kid's Day." It has raised more than $2.5 million for the Arthur Ashe Foundation over the past six years.

After he contracted the AIDS virus he was asked, 'Is this the hardest thing you've ever had to deal with?' And he said, 'No, the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with is being a black man in this society says author Ralph Wiley about Arthur Ashe on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The tennis "firsts" were served up and chronicled through most of Arthur Ashe's life. They often arrived hand in hand with his color: first African-American male to win the U.S. championship, first to win at Wimbledon, first to play for the U.S. Davis Cup team, and on and on. Arthur Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open as an amateur. While sports record books dutifully mark these achievements, civil rights and health historians embrace a more substantive image of the man who seldom shied from fighting for what he believed was right. His fight lasted to the final days of a much-publicized bout with AIDS, a personal struggle he had hoped to keep private. An independent thinker who considered himself a moderate, Ashe crusaded against South African apartheid and the treatment of Haitian refugees. He pushed for higher academic standards for athletes, particularly for minorities. He raised millions of dollars for inner-city tennis centers and the United Negro College Fund, started the African- American Athletic Association and wrote

It was ten years ago yesterday (Feb. 6, 1993) when Arthur Ashe died from AIDS-related pneumonia.
Today, he must be smiling from the heavens.
Earlier this morning, rising American tennis star, James Blake, who is ranked in the top 25 in the world rankings, took to the court as he led the United States Davis Cup team in a first-round match against Croatia.
In 1969, Ashe co-founded the USA Tennis National Junior Tennis League, a program to provide economically disadvantaged youth the opportunity to learn tennis.
Today, the program continues to flourish as a training ground for young stars. In fact, Blake honed his game while playing in the Harlem Junior Tennis Program. After turning pro in 1999, Blake won his first professional tournament last year, defeating Andre Agassi on his way to the title.
Other stars such as Serena and Venus Williams, who are ranked one and two in the world respectively, also took part in the NJTL when they were learning how to play tennis.
Off the court, Ashe worked tirelessly to eliminate racism and poverty around the world, particularly in segregated South Africa. He also devoted countless time and effort to creating tennis opportunities for youngsters from all backgrounds.

Help Me Choose My Seats at the Arthur Ashe Stadium
General Information: Tennis fans do not seem to have a clear consensus on where the best viewing angles are in Tennis. Many people want to sit at center court but the people who seem to know tennis prefer to sit in the corner or end so they can avoid moving their head back and forth to follow the ball. In the corners, you do not have to move your head and you can really gauge the actual speed of the ball from this angle.
The Very Best Seats:
Editor Rating: Very Good Seats: Rows A-C of the Loge are still very close to the action and tickets for these sections are often available at about half the price or less of the Courtside seats. If price is a bit of an issue but you still want to sit in very good seats, try to secure some seats in the first few rows of the Loge section.
